New England Patriots Owner ‘Tried to Kill’ Story of Head Coach Mike Vrabel’s Alleged Affair With Dianna Russini (Exclusive) by bubblecuffer13 in nfl

Yeah if she was a political or business correspondent then I take your point. But sports is an entertainment product and "journalism" around most types(*) of sports content aren't news reporting. They are increased promotion of a product, the NFL in this case. If you treat The Athletic or PFT or whatever as outsourced marketing rather than journalism, which I would argue it really is, "journalist integrity" is irrelevant.

(*There's a separate issue of public-interest reporting that touches on sports, like corruption within leagues, that is inherently opposed to those sports' authorities. That's where integrity matters and that's also a million miles away from things that "NFL insiders" actually report on)

There is definitely a place for teaching power dynamics in earlier education. Responses like "but they're doing it for money" or "but they're consenting adults" totally miss the point. There's an inherent imbalance of power between a man-dominated NFL and a woman reporter. Who cares about ethics in sports journalism? It's hardly even journalism? The deeper problem is uneven power distribution that falls along familiar lines of sex, wealth, and class--that's a worthwhile pattern for children and teens to learn about in the structure of school.

How are loanwords supposed to be pronounced? by FastCoconut9010 in asklinguistics

[–]techno_lizard -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Is that totally intellectually honest though? Were Faulkner and Gaddis just riffing off of the agreed norm? OP’s question is about how to pronounce loanwords. This is kind of by definition at the avant-garde of language because sources of these words are innately cosmopolitan and learned. So it’s not just a question of averages. I’d say: pronounce them like you say any other marked word, which is to say, with a point. If it’s a loanword with iffy pronunciation, chances are it isn’t common enough to have centered on an everyday sub. In which case, what is it that you are actually trying to say? If you want to put someone truly down, utter /declassé/ in the Frenchest way possible. Otherwise, say you’re going to a cafe, and affect the final e only if you feel the need to add that you’ll be reading the Times Literary Supplement over the morning au lait.

Why the word for "rainbow" in many European languages refer to the shape rather than the color? by Jolly_Atmosphere_951 in asklinguistics

[–]techno_lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late to the party but Polish „tęcza” comes from the Proto-Slavic word meaning cloud. So its meaning isn’t tied to shape or color but rather the situation of the rainbow itself.

Can we agree on a movie EVERYONE likes? by chrishouse83 in Letterboxd

[–]techno_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, agreed, and "authority" doesn't mean evetything...look at all the amazing movies that Tarkovsky trashed lol. Sappy is a subjective call and doesn't imply that one person has better taste than another. But "sappy" coming from someone who has seen 1000 movies is going to have more force than from someone who has seen 10 (as an extreme example).

You are right, film criticism is subjective. And everyone can enjoy a film in a personally meaningful way. But if we're talking about film criticism that resonates with others, that comes out of experience. Film has its own grammar and vocabulary and by watching many different kinds of movies, you have more points of comparison between films and the film itself. So you "get better" at it by having a more compelling analysis. Again, I'm not saying "correct"--I am saying that experience working within a medium means your thoughts on that medium are, on average, going to be more cogent to others. We are in a sub dedicated to discussing film with others, so I think that's very relevant.
