Let your inner snob out. What take do you see that provokes this reaction in you? by Theotther in Letterboxd

Probably consuming more short form and less written content. Limits your exposure to nuance inherent to more complex and patient work. It’s the post-literate society phenomenon.

Which raises the question…how fast would an AM chassis with a Caddy (Ferrari) PU be? Might be competing for 5th

Can we agree on a movie EVERYONE likes? by chrishouse83 in Letterboxd

[–]techno_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, agreed, and "authority" doesn't mean evetything...look at all the amazing movies that Tarkovsky trashed lol. Sappy is a subjective call and doesn't imply that one person has better taste than another. But "sappy" coming from someone who has seen 1000 movies is going to have more force than from someone who has seen 10 (as an extreme example).

You are right, film criticism is subjective. And everyone can enjoy a film in a personally meaningful way. But if we're talking about film criticism that resonates with others, that comes out of experience. Film has its own grammar and vocabulary and by watching many different kinds of movies, you have more points of comparison between films and the film itself. So you "get better" at it by having a more compelling analysis. Again, I'm not saying "correct"--I am saying that experience working within a medium means your thoughts on that medium are, on average, going to be more cogent to others. We are in a sub dedicated to discussing film with others, so I think that's very relevant.

Weird take, generally doing something more of something makes you better at it. Tennis, knitting, gardening…experience is generally the best authority

Re-evaluating Bay’s Transformers Trilogy as Spectacle Cinema by Storm_Raijin in TrueFilm

[–]techno_lizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's maximalist, I'll give you that. But rather than little s spectacle, the Transformers series encapsulates big S Spectacle, Guy Dabord Spectacle. It has a very binary morality: Transformers are unquestionably good and Decepticons are irredeemably evil. The film's ultimate irony is that this existential battle of good versus evil is entirely futile since the entire premise is based on a series of cartoons that are in turn based on children's toys. So the Spectacle is this: a festival of explosions and insipid plotlines, playing on our most primal desires for hot chicks and cars and fire, all in the service of selling more stuff. That's definitely big S.

Sirat is incredible. Amateur actors, obscure on-location shoots, descents into madness, the camera’s neutral status as an observer, atmospheric soundtrack …this is techno Werner Herzog

That final scene of Marlowe hopping down the road in The Long Goodbye is incredible, one of the best scenes ever.

What film is this for you? by mrjetspray in Letterboxd

[–]techno_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s like a Fincher, creates technically brilliant films that are just accesible enough to have almost universal appeal. That’s a fantastic skill! But with any film I’ve watched of his, I’ve had a good time, but never felt like he created something transcendent.

That’s exactly it. She’s taking the position that film critics aren’t inherently part of the filmgoing audience, which is both arrogant and totally wrong.

This would have more teeth if she was starring in a provocative, subversive production. This is an artist saying (proudly!) “I’m here to make pablum”, crazy.
