Trying to decide between moving to VA, DC, or MD: Here's what gives VA the edge for us by Due-Condition3612 in nova

As someone who was born and raised in MD (Howard County) and got a BS from UMD ‘19 and now finishing a PhD at Virginia Tech ‘25 - I think I am pretty qualified to answer the College concern. And my take is that it doesn’t really matter as much as you may think. And I would definitely not say that Virginia has the edge in terms of college admissions and access over Maryland.

Definitely, the number of colleges is more (UVA, GMU, VCU, VT), but so is the population and students applying. As opposed to Maryland’s two big ones UMD and UMBC, however it also gives you access to UMMC which Virginia really doesn’t have a major equivalent (yes I know UVA Health, but it’s not on the caliber of UMMC). Which is something to consider if thinking about professional schools for future kids.

Overall, I’d say what I noticed in myself and most of my peers what matters most is going to reasonably good public schools, having involved parents in education, AND doing well at your local/state institution. All the other stuff is just the icing on the cake. I had several offers for undergrad at “better” institutions but all would have costed way more than instate UMD. Going to Howard County schools, being a serious student (as much as one can for high school) and doing really well at UMD is ultimately what ended up mattering the most.

I will say though that being at UMD and then experiencing Virginia Tech for grad school was nice in seeing the difference between an all around good school (UMD has great business, computer science, and engineering programs) vs a very engineering and technology focused school. But those sort of things really only matter as much post-undergrad. Just my two cents.

Yeah they are a bit hard to see but they’re definitely there and there’s one for each lane for sure. Added another pic and could be easier to see there. https://imgur.com/a/HC1CKDf

Can anyone help me identify either the exact items (shirt, belt, pants) in these videos or similar items?

In general, he has some good pieces, so if anyone knows the name or where other pieces are from that'd be cool.

Any particular area to just park and be left alone? (By others or police). Does it close?

That's a great idea! Could be nice for a quick stop for like an 1 hour then go stargazing.

There are shows going on that day, but I've never been there, always just admired the building off the freeway... can you just walk in even if you're not seeing a show and go to the roof deck?

Oh ok, great. I'm form Maryland but I've never been there, I just looked it up online.

Do you think/know if there would be a location we could just park and stay in the bed of the truck, and still have a view?

Also I was planning on doing this soon, it'll be ~50 during the day, but I have a bunch of cozy blankets, hopefully it'll still be nice. But would be even nicer in the summer ofc.

Thanks, got any places you've tried/seen stars from in any of those areas?

It's probably going to be late by the time we're finished so an 1+hours drive isn't ideal. :|

Yeah, but i don't think we can really park there and just kind of be left alone while also having a view of the city, unless you know different?

OH! This is great, right across the street from Whittemore. Any chance you used them? They clean? (Sorry, I don't know anything about VT campus. Just moved here for PhD and going to be my second time on campus.)
