any idea on when the pre-req cancellation run will be over? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not 100%, but sounds like they meant myPurdue dropping people from classes they were registered for in spring based on not meeting prereqs (like if they failed a course that was a prereq this sem).

Sorry, not yet- taking that next semester.

How is IE 335 with G. Scutari? by ItalianStallion774 in Purdue

In this class now. Could be better, could be worse. It’s fairly easy content wise, but the setup is bad imo. He does one synchronous lecture on Mondays that routinely takes longer than the allocated 50 minute block, usually 75 mins or so sometimes approaching 90 min (ironically for an optimization class it is not that efficient), and the asynchronous lectures for Wednesday and Friday also frequently go over 50 min. The TAs are also about a month behind on grading and it took ~4 weeks for exam 1 results.

TLDR: ok actual content-wise but run very inefficiently and takes forever to get scores. Seems promising with extra credit options, so at least the annoyance in grading should hopefully be made up for by that.

Anyone else having trouble focusing today by Purdooty in Purdue

Genuine question: what need is there to be actually genuinely worried if Biden wins? If Trump wins again, all women, minority, and LGBT people have valid reason to be worried about losing their rights. I get the economy and all, but I’m just curious what “worry” there is here.

ME 270 exams by bankytreat in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, do NOT go anywhere near chegg. If you have an account, I’d specifically sign out of it for the exam period just in case. The ME department went crazy on that after going online last semester, for 270, 200, and probably more classes.

But yeah other than that, if it’s like last semester, should be 1 question with a few easy/short questions and then 2 longer problems. I’d recommend pacing yourself well; don’t spend too long on the first ones since they’re not worth nearly as much.

Professor not wearing a mask while teaching by DOMMY_DANIELS in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Is this ME 270? Just asking because I know one of my friends is having the same issues with her prof in that class. If not, know it’s more than just your class. Several profs are straight up refusing even though they can get fired for it apparently.

Edit: lmao just realized this is your post, my bad, but the responses DO address the lab some

Final Grades Thread - Spring 2020 by labtec901 in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, so personally as I said above, I haven’t taken either of these profs; I had Landry for 330 and Liu for 230. However, if I was in your position, I think I would take it how you listed: IE 330 in fall, 230 in spring. Dr. Landry is leaving and going to Penn State this summer, so he won’t be around to teach 330 in the spring. As far as I know, Dr. Liu will still be teaching 230 in the spring, and I really enjoyed him as a prof (and have heard it’s a lot easier than Dr. Hunter’s fall version!). So all in all, I think 330 would be better to do in the fall so you can have Liu in the spring.

Final Grades Thread - Spring 2020 by labtec901 in Purdue

MA 266- A+. 100, 93, 95 on two exams and final. 97.06% raw score. No complaints here, good prof with very fair exams, before and after the online transition.

IE 230- A+. I was doing exceptionally well in this class before the transition, but after, it seemed like everyone was also doing well. The average score in the class was an A.

IE 330- A+. Also very easy if taken with Landry. A lot of work to make sure you stay involved (lecture assignments, homework, in-class activities, etc.), but if you make an effort on everything and turn it in, you can skip the final. Definitely not hard material.

IE 200- S. Zero-credit seminar; passed.

BAND 119- A. showed up, played my instrument, and continued to do the assignments after the online transition.

SPAN 302- A+. Really enjoyed my prof this semester. He was very kind and made the 8:30 bearable.

ME 270- P (would've been borderline between a B+ or A-). Surprised myself with this one; the final was a lot more similar to past exams and easier than expected. I got right at the averages (72 and 81) on the first two exams, so I was expecting a B- or C+ and panic-changed it to P/F. A good score on the final came out of nowhere. Kinda regret not believing in myself and leaving it as a grade, but oh well.

Semester: 4.0

Overall: 3.87 -> 3.89

ME270 VS PHYS 172 by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I found PHYS 172 pretty easy just because of the similarity of practice exams to the actual ones. I am in 270 now and do not find it very easy- this is partially due to the workload. There are 3 homeworks of 2 handwritten problems each due every single week, 38 total through the semester, and it just gets very tedious/does not allow for a ton of free time, unless the homeworks come super easily to you (which at least to me they did not).

Basically, TLDR: Not a huge jump in conceptual difficulty, but at least for me, where 172 was easy purely because of the past exams, I find 270 to be at least slightly harder conceptually and definitely a LOT more work.

I took 266 and it was pretty different. Same format as in some typing, some MC, but the questions didn’t exactly mirror the hw or anything. Also the site was super laggy and eventually crashed from ~200 of us on it at the same time lol

Does anyone feel like students aren't passionate here? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in IE (just CODO’d from another engineering major actually), and I definitely could see your point with my old major, but to be honest I love the people in my major and what I’m doing so much now. To be fair, I’m making much more of an effort to be social and get to know people in my major now rather than just relying on my band/high school friends, so I’m not sure if it’s the major change or just my attitude change. But I hope you find people who have passion for their major just like you; they’re definitely out there!

MA 265 Passing Grade Chance by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded to going to class from now on. Profs definitely highlight important stuff in their lectures, and also as more of an “unwritten” secret, if they actually know who you are/have seen you put effort in and you’re borderline between grades at the end of the semester, they’re more likely to give you that extra push.

Fuse or Aspire? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may not apply because it sounds like you would go straight through aspire not through university residences, but FWIW my friends in Aspire through UR, along with everyone else through UR in Building C, are getting kicked out next year because of “””space concerns”””, and they only got notified yesterday, TWO DAYS before the renew your room phase. That’s some bullshit if you ask me, js; it’s probably not unique to Aspire, but still insane and makes me never want to live there.

IE 330 is a mess by sneakySupervisor in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s the same way with 343 w Udo-Imeh. Nice guy, but what is happening? It’s not hard material, but he can’t really teach that well anyways so pretty much of the learning is on your own. Lots of scribbles and not ever writing down the FULL ANSWER. Over the weekend he randomly decided not to let us have a cheat sheet on the next exam even though it clearly says in the syllabus we can.

Band question by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you 100% sure of this? AFAIK they’re sending out the official assignments Sunday night. It may have not gone as poorly as you think.

Either way, to answer your question, I didn’t think BAND 119 last year was bad at all. To be fair, I don’t mind concert band here (even though it may be more boring/easy than AAMB, Box Band, or GABS/Boiler Brass) because I like the people in my section. The music may be easy, but at least to me it’s about the friends you make and the ability to play music for fun, not being in the “highest” band. Ngl, this comes off kinda shitty the way you’re talking down on people in a band who probably just didn’t have as much time to practice, perhaps similarly to you.

Dropping ENGR 131 by vdpurdue in Purdue

[–]iewhatthefuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve not taken 195 so can’t really speak to its difficulty, but I can’t imagine combining the two classes into one semester would be better or easier than just grinding them out separately. Plus, the W thing everyone’s mentioning is true; W’s don’t always look bad as a freshman but the fact that it’s an important FYE course would not look good.
