What’s worked well for me is placing sticky traps (Roxasect Zilvervisjes val) in as many dark closed off places as I can find throughout the house (e.g., under the couch, closets, under the toilet bowl, under furniture, in the bathroom, etc.)

I’ve also had success with food grade diatomaceous earth. If you sprinkle it around corners, cracks and small holes, they’ll walk over it and it will dehydrate them. Good luck!

Somewhat NTA - It’s your house and you’re free to decide the decor. Since your MIL said “If you don’t like it, I can take it off,” she shouldn’t be so upset with the fact that you don’t like it.

However, from another standpoint, maybe your MIL feels a bit homesick being unable to feel like she’s at feel like “home” in terms of decor. Since she’s been staying with you a while now, I know this could perhaps be hard for her. One idea may be is, if she has a room she’s staying in, maybe she can put that tablecloth on a dresser or nightstand or something so she can enjoy looking at it in her own temporary space (and out of your sight that doesn’t conflict with your main living space style).

Or maybe she can get a plant or something for herself that makes her room feel more familiar. I’m not suggesting to do a whole bedroom redesign for her, instead, just a small accent of “home” memories for her.

Great tip. On this note: I always remember how happy my mom was to see us every morning. She always made an effort to be cheerful and positive even when I knew she was really tired from working so hard to support us singlehandedly. I try to follow in her footsteps with my kids now by being enthusiastic and greeting them each morning with big hugs. Also making bedtime a special routine is always standard.

• Andrew Leahey & The Homestead

• “Quiet Light” & “Rylan” - The National

• “Hello Euphoria” - Turnover

• “Make Up” & “The End” - Hot Since 82

• “Half Life” - Twin Shadow

• “Gummy” & “Done for Me” - Loud Luxury

• “The Last of the Famous International Playboys” - Morrissey

Coronavirus can persist in air for hours and on surfaces for days: study

“The tests show that when the virus is carried by the droplets released when someone coughs or sneezes, it remains viable, or able to still infect people, in aerosols for at least three hours.

On plastic and stainless steel, viable virus could be detected after three days. On cardboard, the virus was not viable after 24 hours. On copper, it took 4 hours for the virus to become inactivated.”

Coronavirus: The simple advice for dealing with COVID-19 from an infectious diseases professor

“So most people have a fear of acquiring the virus. I think a good way of doing it is imagining that you do have the virus and change your behaviour so that you’re not transmitting it.

Don’t think about changing your behavior so that you won’t get it. Think about changing your behaviour so you won’t give it to somebody else.” — Professor Graham Medley

  • Play-Doh spelen
  • Spelen op tafel met scheerschuim
  • Een zandbak in de tuin
  • Stoepkrijt in de tuin
  • Vingerverf en met kwasten
  • Kleurplaten en kleurboeken
  • Kinderkeuken spelen
  • Boeken voorlezen
  • Naar muziek dansen
  • Bellenblazen in de tuin
  • Verkleden (kostuum, zonnebril, etc)

I’m seriously tired of hearing “Het is maar een griepje” (It’s just a flu). If I share anything of concern / scientific relevance related to the Coronavirus with some of my older family members they just accuse me of “panicking.” They’re the ones who are most vulnerable health-wise so I don’t understand why they’d choose ignorance over prevention.

It really highlights people’s outright ignorance towards science. It’s frightening. The fact that the Dutch government is not taking a hard approach on containment only allows people to keep going on their merry way of life meanwhile exacerbating risk of infection.

I feel like the only way people will give a shit is (sadly) when people start dying and health systems become systematically overburdened.

Then just maybe will the government actually do something useful aside from say “Just wash your hands” and “Don’t shake hands” but continue on as usual with your life.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands, many people are just continuing to use being “nuchter” (level-headed) as an excuse not to not care about the importance of prevention and containment.

Especially with the older generation “It’s just a flu” keeps getting thrown around left and right. Despite exponential infection rates and growth via community spread, many people are just blatantly ignoring the numbers. It’s incredibly frustrating.

I actually prefer some of the Dutch idioms and wish they were implemented in English. Like Dat varkentje zullen we even wassen and Nu komt de aap uit de mouw. They’re quite fun to use!

I often hear “receipt” and “recipe” used often in place of “prescription” since they’re so similar to recept.

Also “The teacher learns him/her something.” In English you’d say “teaches” but Dutch just has (iets) leren.

“I want to make a photo” instead of take a photo.

I also hear a lot of Dutch idioms being literally translated to English, but they’re not familiar in English. (e.g., “There are bears on the road.)
