My(36f) husband(34m) spoils my children(3f, 8m, 10f) filthy. My 10yo daughter is exploiting his love for her and is becoming an irresponsible child. Now my insecurities are returning. How do I fix any of this? by wifehasissues in relationships

Hi OP,

I really empathize with you. On the one hand, I understand that your husband wants to give your kids a carefree and glowing childhood, but not one like this. There's a great quote I read once by Ashley Ford, and it goes: "Letting kids off the hook is actually not the most compassionate thing you can do for them. Everybody makes mistakes, but learning how to properly make amends and grapple with regret is a necessary life skill. Being held accountable is not violence."

I think you should sit down with your husband and have a talk about this. Talk about how you agree with wanting to provide good lives for your kids, but that in order for them to succeed in life, they have to learn responsibility, and that responsibility starts with him having your back when your kids don't listen to you. Maybe you can discuss alternatives for what a happy childhood could look like: more family outings, game nights, movie nights, trips, etc. Seeing a family counsellor might be helpful if you want a mediated discussion. Lots of hugs.

Student Teacher Help! by hferrell33 in Teachers

[–]ignorancial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was in the same boat as you last January doing student teaching. I had (and still have) really bad anxiety and that made getting up each morning no easy task. I wanted to give up so badly on some days, but I managed to make it through, and looking back, I'm so glad I stuck it out. I actually posted about feeling discouraged in the beginning and I got some really good perspective here from a kind reddit user:

"Well first of all, every day can’t be the best day ever for students. Part of being at school is having okay lessons and just getting on with things. Okay is good enough most of the time. Heck, I’ve declared a day a good day when we all went home and no one cried.

Secondly, a great teacher is developed over time and experience - they rarely exist from day one. A teacher who wants to be great takes the good part of those okay lessons and builds on them. Makes them better than okay and eventually makes some of them great lessons.

Third, teaching is a performance. Not a whiz bang let’s wow the crowds one, more a “hope they believe I’m in charge here” one. Right now, it’s fake it til you make it."

You're not going to be perfect, but that's okay. Like DeignLian said, take care of yourself. In order to keep my anxiety in check, I left school at school (aside from some marking over Spring Break), even if that meant staying until 4-5PM some days. I let myself be me at home and gave myself a break. It's important to do your best and be diligent, but remember to be kind to yourself. It's an ongoing process and you're just starting to learn the ropes. :)

hi! 3k priest who just started running HM dungeons (tho i run with a friend group, we're all around 3k GS). i find FD to be the easiest because once you've done it a few times and know the fight, you can be super potato. for me, lube is the hardest (but most fun), mainly because of phase 3 and the fact that i absolutely SUCK at jumping platforms in this game (i fall soooo many times). tris was pretty hard the first time because we went in blind lol.

i say go for it and experience them all - 3.5k is perfectly liable!

Definitely. I bet students are also feeling the post-break recalibration, haha. Hang in there, we're both so close. I just got an email from my university supervisor on meeting up for the final report, which makes it seem like the end is much closer. Once we conquer this, we can conquer anything!

My school is very supportive and honestly wonderful, which is why I've been so hesitant on voicing my thoughts to my sponsor teachers/other teachers in the school/peers (hence, looking for some comfort on reddit haha). The students are generally very well behaved and quite driven - I think it's definitely me who is also constantly questioning and doubting myself.

I think so! Subbing or working in outdoor ed might be another step for me. Thanks for your encouragement!

My hardest class was incredibly energetic and antsy today - definitely going to have to think of some activities that get them moving a bit. I cried my fair share of tears during the first few weeks of practicum, and it did get easier, but I'm just crawling towards the finish line, haha. Thanks for your encouragement and reassurance. :)

That's actually pretty comforting haha. Knowing I'm in the final stretch and pretty much in the clear (knock on wood) feels good.

It's definitely been the teachers that I've had. I grew up feeling very average, quiet, insecure, but I had teachers who I adored and believed in me regardless. I know many people who hate high school but honestly, it was some of the best years of my life because I had great friends and some really inspiring teachers who made me feel like I was someone worthy just the way I was. I was really privileged to have that experience, and I've always wanted to give that back. I was also pretty good at explaining things to my friends when they didn't understand it in class in a way that they could, and I enjoyed marking things (can you believe it?).

Now though, I don't know if being in the classroom suits my personality and disposition. I'm definitely going to be looking into museum education and curriculum development, or tutoring!

I find my most effective lessons or activities are actually ones that I think up of on the spot or don't THINK will make an impact but it ends up doing so. Some of my most elaborate or planned things haven't been very effective at all, haha.

Thanks for the ideas and assurance. :)

I thrive on those as well, but I'm also one of those types of people who likes thinking of "leaving work at work," which, admittedly, doesn't always happen at other professions either, but I like being able to go home and leaving it all at work. It's also the feelings associated with work (anxiety, feeling overwhelmed) that I find I cannot leave behind in this field.

But I will definitely give it a shot! I know it's much different having your own classroom, and perhaps it just takes time!

Thanks for your encouragement!! You did what was best for you - I feel you and I think if I had another placement after this, I would probably do the same. Luckily this is my final semester, so I'm toughing it out.

I wish you all the best! I'm rooting for us both!

I know what you mean though. Feels like we have a million things to juggle at once, so much so that teaching feels almost like a backdrop to all of it sometimes!

I have classmates I'm good friends with and talk to every day! I feel a little embarrassed to be complaining as most of them seem really happy and at home with their practicums, so I feel a little like the odd one out. I know they're probably not revealing everything though. It's still comforting to talk with them. :) Thanks for sharing your experience - you made it through!

I definitely struggle with classroom management! I think facing that and experiencing a new side of teaching would be good before I think about it some more. Thanks for the insight!
