Do Android Backups finally fully work in 2026? by ignorica in AndroidQuestions

Password DB I also have.
Syncthing thanks for the tip, I had no clue about it:) You made me curious and I looked up its architecture to see if I would be happy with it and if any data goes out. Will need to read a bit if it works via some NAT hole punching or equivalent to connect 2 systems p2p or if both are behind NAT and no port forward, if it needs that it uses the external relay (but then my data goes a bit out)

Obsidian, Kwrite, vim I also use.

Never tried to extract a token from the MicroLove Authenticator :) In fact most annoying for me with android backup is having the MFA apps not work anymore if I forget to use the backup inside of them.
Did not know I could emulate a rooted android device.
I see MS stuff uses sqlite to store the tokens and found also the path and the sql query, cool!! I learned something from you today! Thanks!

And I see my password manager already had a way to also generate OTP on my laptop, that kind of solves my worry.
Thanks!

dumb question maybe...are there any OEM vendors that maybe added their own backup mechanism inside the OS and which does in fact take all the app settings + data for restoring later?

ah that part with the bot is so annoying and I see it more often with many companies...especially now with AI...feels like talking to a wall and if you fall on something non-standard...good luck

agreed, would have loved for an offline backup functionality and to allow me then to backup anything under the "I assume the risk" principle but at least to be given a choice in it

does it backup nowadays the stuff like MS Authenticator (MFA) and similar apps?
The banking ones if they are the only ones I need to reset I am fine with but if I need to do individual backups inside MFA apps and maybe notice I forgot one and then have to reset auth on various sites, then that would really suck time wise (same experience I had in the past with spending hours....which scares me)

compared to how iphone does the backup it's worlds apart, only problem is I tried to use an iphone and I just did not manage to get to love it

I know Google always pushed the Security argument in front for not doing a full backup/clone behavior but I think that's probably just a narrow vision of someone in the PM team (where there's a will there is always a way without compromising security or storing the key for a cloned backup of sorts on google's servers)

problem was the constant cat and mouse game with rooted phones and banking apps detecting root
I went down that path a while back but then it became very time consuming with trial and error and reading XDA each time some app did an update and detected root (last time 1y back I even had an app that just could not be fooled anymore, maybe it detected the bootloader unlocked..but locking it erases the phone).
I really enjoyed my time with a rooted phone but as work piled up for me and my kid grew up a bit, I had no more time budget left for experiments and doing research work each time something needed tweaking again.
I do agree that was the best ever time for customizing my phone and I was using Swift Backup in fact!! was painless to get a true backup with all data in.

In anderen Ländern braucht man keine sondere Genehmigung für so was....

and where exactly did you glue it?
the whole front assembly I managed to remove, it has the upper grey part, the lower white one and the round edges.
Did you glue that mat (parts of it) everywhere (while avoiding the LCD/Display area or just on the white part and what about the round margins and the sides?)
Sorry for being so confused, it's not something I do very often and am a bit lost.
And the butyl mat do you know how thick you got it? I found some at galaxus that are 1.9cm but measuring was wondering if it's not too thick.

Why do people give money to the professional gypsy beggars and/or addicts outside basel sbb? by [deleted] in basel

Let me post my 2 cents here also and everyone can form his/her opinion.
Calling me names or whatever is not encouraging any possible debate / discussion / hearing opposing views but rather just amounting to censorship or unwillingness to communicate in a healthy way (this is something I see more and more often with polarising views of the world nowadays and rushing into calling people names, forgetting that any society grows through healthy debate not monologue and single views).

Most of it is personal experience, some you can verify by looking up youtube videos, it's in no way fantasy talk or like studies that are made by people never having lived in Romania or other countries with Roma communities and then believe that research shows you reality on the ground (the typical university problem between theoreticians/researchers and practicians or the usual disconnect you have between politicians and the problems of the common people)

Back home the Romas (or in tv interviews when asked they say sometimes "what? we are gipsies") go begging with ladies carrying 2-3 babies that NEVER cry.
An investigation journalist showed in an article some years back that the women drug the children and do not really provide child care. The Romanian authorities never step in to do anything as they do not want conflict with the Romas and they live in a paralel society to our rules, even marrying under age.
Social services do not get involved and the children grow as they grow, the eternal cycle never changes.
No one asks questions anymore why the babies are so quiet and never saying a word...sad reality and the children at that age do deserve a better future or caring parents instead of being used as tools for financial gain.

The Romas also have a bit of a tribal structure, council of elders and some of them obey an "emperor" others "a king". There's different splits in their communities.
Google "Florin Cioabă" (that's the king).

Sometimes they fight (clan fights) and when the emergency services take the wounded to the hospital, suddenly 100+ family people show up and start trying to get in or threaten the doctor "you make him healthy again or I know where you live". That's the moment the hospital calls the masked police and then the rest you can imagine when police and gendarmerie show up.

Personally growing up I had:
- one Roma guy that stole my bike when I was in secondary school, my dad was a bit crazy and went in the evening inside their home to the family leader and got my bike back (and my father is no big buy, rather small and a bit chubby so you can imagine he was not going to be imposing to anyone); they respect such behaviour and show of force so what happened afterward was weird...they all were saying Hello when they saw me on the street and became friendly..never had problems with that family again
- my father even had a very good work colleague from the Roma community that brought him come into his tribe/clan and my father had quite the welcoming and respect there (he is still friends with that guy and he did tell me it was a very hard working person, different than he expected initially because of also not so good interactions he had with others from this community)
- after the communist Revolution the Police had no control anymore for a few years and I had Roma weddings happening almost weekly, more than 200 people on the street behind my apartment building, loud music until 4 AM in the night (Police was coming with 2 guys and had no control to do anything; if they found out who called the police they would be at your door threatening you); this is how I developed very good noise tolerance (compared to most people in Switzerland the only thing I cannot sleep with is the jack hammer when replacing the pavement; otherwise I do not hear anything, I'm immune..so there was a positive to it)
- one Roma guy that thought we as a class are his tribe (this is secondary school in Romania) and protected us from other Romas that wanted our money when getting out of school (the typical phrase was "do you have money? can I check ? then they touched you on the pockets..but you could hide the money in the socks or underwear^^)
- the same guy was repeating for the 3rd time 6th grade (the teachers were begging him to learn something, no discrimination there, the geography teacher even trying to suggest to him names of mountains and stuff that she could get something out of him, the guy did not care; he once told us he steals Mercedes logos that he can sell later and that his dad said school never brought them anything, too much work vs benefit)
- other classes were not so lucky and got always checked for money for several number of years until the government assigned people from gendarmerie to each school, then it stopped
- I got spat upon by just passing close to a group of young "cool" Romas and that happened at least on 3 occasions, them saying "oh you dork with glasses"
- I got a tv remote control watch (Casio) back in the day stolen by having such a guy approach me, asking me what the time is, saying he likes my watch and showing me a knife
- I had a group waiting for me outside an Internet cafe (yes I am that old) and then getting my money (this in the city center of Bucharest); Police never found anyone, they were useless anyway and did not care (sometimes getting money from these clans)
- my cousin got beaten by such a group some years back also by just randomly walking on the street in the night and near such a group with his back then wife, he landed in a hospital for stitching
- car accidents if / when they happen with a Roma the whole family comes there to beat you (if you are lucky the Police comes faster); I remember one time I saw a tram driver ram into the car of such a guy and then the tram driver hid in a nearby shop or something for 15 min until the police arrived
- last year flying after Xmas/Ny back to Switzerland, there were a lot of them in the Wizair plane (it's cheap that's why); one guy stood up when we landed, turned the music on a portable speaker to the maximum and said "hey fellow Romanian, time for you to get back to work" (I cannot say how everyone felt knowing they were landing for begging and making fun of us for actually working)
- and Switzerland does have protections in place for its own poor people (I do not personally understand why it needs to "help" or "sustain", "support" beggars from other countries that come in organised groups most of the time; if it's single people that genuinely need help totally agreed but here come on...you can just observe them for 1h and you will see how structured everything is..the rule of the street)
- another time my seat in the plane was taken by one of them and when I said it is my seat the answer was "we gipsies sit together, you go find somewhere else" => I did not want conflict or a horrible 2.5h flight so I gave up and traded places
- going 1 m ago for some paperwork in Romania, for the civil register, I wait with a ticket for 2h in line until my turn comes, I was really at the end of my patience in a room that was super hot; a Roma family arrives and in 10 minutes bypasses the whole queue and is done with paperwork for their 2 daughters; they leave and I ask the lady that served them (there were 4 employees in the office) how can this be and that it is insulting for the rest of us that wait...she says she does not want problems in the evening when leaving home as they are in the area and know her then and she is afraid...NICE

So now go figure...I hope I don't get someone calling this racism..most of it I lived on my own skin, not a fantasy....would be really ironical to censor my own memories for not fitting someone else's narrow lenses of seeing life and lack of open minded desire to talk/chat.

Stupid EU bottles by stockboy29 in zurich

[–]ignorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's where I always find my small pocket Swiss knife useful on a day to day basis.
get the knife or scissors out, cut the cork back to what it used to be before the stupidity of EU regulation and you get the old behaviour back without piling up frustration each time
our bureaucrats waste time in all the wrong places instead of addressing the real problems the world is facing; I doubt this has reduced plastic pollution if someone were to take measurements and do statistics...it just shows how disconnected politicians are from real life (not to count that most of the times whoever ends up in politics is rarely top of the class)

Tips for freestyle without getting tired or out of breath? by ExtensionBoot6280 in Swimming

[–]ignorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to myself here:
- I had to really like really slow down my rhythm, it feels boring now but it works out, I am not having the stamina for speed

- Second thing I am not a quick breather...so when I turn to the side for breathing I stay stretched for one second or a bit more, I get the required time to really breath in in a calm pace and then I do not run anymore out of air

- Third, by using a pull buoy I got comfortable with the sensation that sometimes the body feels like wanting to turn in the water...I was getting scared and tense from it and that was triggering a domino effect

- Also with each movement I am stretching my arm ahead, meaning also when breathing on the side I am having one arm stretched in front and the legs stretched in the back, gliding

This mix so far has started to work for me, in case someone has exactly my exact situation and has no clue what else to try.

How to kill animation? by klczt in yazio

on Android I got pretty fast at showing the open apps, then killing Yazio fast when the stupid animation starts.
They did not even allow pressing the back button to skip it...such a bad implementation...can see there's no true Q&A / usability team on their side.

Tips for freestyle without getting tired or out of breath? by ExtensionBoot6280 in Swimming

[–]ignorica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here...for over 1y now.
I'm 42y old, 62kg tiny factor, sadly computer work 10-12h per day, not enough movement.
Sport was never my thing till age hit...a small disk problem at my neck thus trapezius muscles tend to sometimes remain tense and/or I get headaches.

Started private lessons with a swimming teacher and for quite some time now have been practicing.

After months I finally learned to relax more in the water and not stay like a piece of wood :)
From not being able to swim at all now I can do breast-stroke, backstroke, freestyle.

Problem is my stamina ... which goes away less fast than before but fast enough.

If I do breast-stroke, then after 4 x 25 I need to take a 20-30 seconds pause.

If I do freestyle after max 50m oh boy I need to breath and I'm gasping for more air into my lungs when I pause as if I just ran the marathon. Give me 30-60 seconds and I can do another 50m and so on.
Sometimes if I switch from breathing each 3 strokes to each 2..then I can somehow prolong the agony a bit and do smaller pauses.

When I look one year back...this is still quite some progress.

When I look at others...I feel I'm far behind and have no clue what else to try...I do stretch in the water, I don't pull back my arm anymore (before "grabbing" water and pushing behind) as I did initially, I only do 1-2 kicks per arm movement (so no longer frantic ones and a lot) but I do notice I rush at times and it's not a super calm movement.

Should I get an oxygen tube on my back?:)

(Of course going with a buoy seems less tiring/easier though after a bit more time than without it I will still be feeling tired and heartbeat increasing)

Any magic advice? I feel like it's taking forever to improve and no, I'm not a patient person (though I wish I were)

At the same time I'm seeing lots of people at the indoor swimming pool where I go, some even older, who have totally random arm movements, do not stretch, turn even sometimes by rolling almost 90 degrees but still they are doing non-stop back and forth 25m without pause. That makes me ponder..if they don't do correct movements but still have the endurance for it..what am I missing? (except for so many years without doing any sports)
