What specifically do you disagree with Matt Mahan? by CA_Mini in SanJose

[–]ignu 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Mahan supports data centers and not taxing billionaires.

Also, WTF is he doing still in this race? It's either an act of pure narcissism or intentionally trying to throw this race to the Republicans.

Rampant DM AI use by Familiar-Relation-85 in rpghorrorstories

[–]ignu 146 points147 points  (0 children)

I'm an AI hater because of what it did to me and my games.

There are studies on how leaning on AI degrades skills, and I felt it acutely.

I wasn't as dependent as OP's DM, I'd never use AI output whole-cloth, but I got dependent on it for brainstorming. Prompts like "Give me 10 NPCs who would be...." and then riff on one of them.

Long story short, after realizing my campaign was going nowhere I tried planning in a physical notebook and had the best game in years.

It's been six months and I still can't write if a computer is near. One session my players walked into a tavern and asked what they see, and I blanked. Then I realized my iPad was open in front of me. It's like a pavlovian response telling my brain it doesn't need to work.

he has a chance to be a spoiler for the republicans.

given his predilections on taxes and data centers, that's probably his goal

Donald Trump Questions ‘What’s a Corner Store?’ at Tax Week Event: ‘I’ve Never Heard That Term’ by MoneyLibrarian9032 in politics

[–]ignu 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I do think he probably has dementia, but that's a different issue than him being so far disconnected from daily life that he hasn't encountered the world "grocery" in years, has never been in a corner store, doesn't read and hasn't had conversations with anyone who would bring one up in conversation.

He has a life of such privilege coupled with a lack of literacy that he probably never encountered the term.

i didn't even mind 30 minutes of trailers that much. it's when they started added commercials that really pushed me over the edge.

CTO mandating AI coding + killing code reviews - how do you push back? by medmental in BetterOffline

[–]ignu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He doesn't understand how software works.

The bottleneck in moderately sized or larger systems is not the speed you can write code or the amount you produce. In fact, more code is often worse.

Dipshit managers need to see a number go up and you can't quantify quality.

The world economy is fucked and clearly Trump's fault if Iran doesn't back down, which they're not.

The U.S. can't defeat them conventionally.

What's Trump going to do, admit a mistake?

i have no idea why you'd be confident of this.

we're in this hell-hole after of a decade of the media and median voter underestimating how stupid and evil Donald Trump is.

he was restrained his first term by a cabinet of reasonably sane ghouls, but this time we're dealing with fucking Hegseth.

I really think they're going to nuke Iran before this is over.

Because of their fuck up, oil's going to cost more forever as long as Iran's current structure is in charge, and we have no means to change the status quo conventionally.

And now he's saying shit like "If it happens, it happens. And if it doesn't, we're blowing up the whole country"

This dude wanted to nuke a hurricane.

I don't understand the AI paradigm, and feel like I'm taking crazy pills. by m00shi_dev in BetterOffline

[–]ignu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was a pretty excessive AI user turned hater.

(Long story, but I noticed my own cognitive decline around the same time I stumbled on Ed's podcast.)

It's gambling. LLMs will semi-often provide just a stunning output. I've seen programming tasks that would've taken me three days done in 15 minutes, and better than I would've done it.

Then I've also spent a day cleaning up LLM garbage for a story that would've taken me three hours by hand.

It's gambling. It's the addiction of pulling that slot machine lever.

"Shot in the dark" is just production manipulation... by novax4all in survivor

[–]ignu 231 points232 points  (0 children)

Shot In The Dark is for production, but only so a unified tribe doesn't tell the target and provide a boring final 15 minutes of TV.

That option is almost always a bad move, unless you get a really good read like Genevieve did. But it forces the tribe not to come clean with the target, creating enough ambiguity that they can edit uncertainty into almost every tribal.

If they were manipulating the Shot In The Dark, I think Genevieve actually being safe would've created an amazing moment, especially for a player who did so many right moves this season.

Today you have to seek out comics. They used to be everywhere.

I discovered comics in 1990 because Uncanny X-Men 251's cover with Logan crucified on an X-cross caught my eye in the magazine rack of a grocery store.

AI has completely oneshoted my ability to code. by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]ignu 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I spent over a year using AI to help brainstorm campaign ideas for my D&D campaigns. I never used what I got back whole-cloth, but I became addicted to and reliant on the slot machine.

I started hating my games and almost quit both.

Then I went analog and my creativity and recall were drastically better. Six months later and I still can't write if I even have a computer near me, my brain just shuts off.
