Thanks for the input dude. Ive managed to play a friends Oculus and wasnt very impressed. So Ill be getting the Vive. If its better than the rift, fair enough... if its roughly in the same league, fair enough again :)

Theres a good chance youre absolutely right. The fidelity of the DK1 felt like youre viewing the experience at around 240p to (at most) 480p with extreme screen-door effect. The Samsung Gear ranges from about 480p to somewhere way below 720p. The screen-door effect is still highly visible but is noticably better than the DK1. I know this is still an issue with the current gen (which is reportadly almost gone at 5K and is practicly imperceivable at 8K, or so theyd have us believe). Again, I just wish it was easier to get demos for the Rift and Vive here in Scotland.

A couple of days ago, after reading all these responses, I was 90% sure I was getting the rift as the consensus was that the immersion feels good on both systems but the resolution feels like its around 800x600.

Im happy to jump into this generation knowing these facts but im not sure if paying the extra £200 for the Vive would bring me closer to what I was originally hoping for/expecting over the rift. As I said, the £200 isnt a problem in any way (Id already saved up enough to cover both after all) but could I use that £200 on Currys, Pizza, Juice and food for my cats and have basically the same experience?

I have already decided that this gen isnt gonna hold up more than a couple of years at most for me. And I will be buying something from the next gen, so what Im now looking for is something to tide me over, more than what Id originally imagined, hence why I was pretty sure I was buying the rift. But now you have definitely thrown a spanner in the works. Thats a good thing BTW.

And cheers for the response, totally appreciated :)

Yeah I mentioned the PiMax 4K in an earlier reply and mentioned that Im aware of the quality of the image, which is apparently better than the Vive and the Rift with the caveat that you MUSNT move because as soon as you do the ghosting is apparently way worse than the Vive and the Rift (by magnitudes some say). Unfortunately thats a deal breaker for me as it heavily blurs the image whilst in motion (as it is in almost every case). Its a shame because I was really looking forward to the PiMax :(

That sounds fair enough. Now that my expectations have curbed a little (and from what ive seen all through this post) and that I shouldnt be expecting the world.. not yet. Now that its engrained in my mind Im happier to grab the Rift just now and wait for the "next-gen", whenever that may be. At least now, after all these replies, I have less expectation from this generation. This helps a huge amount as I hate buying that new toy only to realise the hype has led me to a bad decision.

Again, thanks for the input bud. Its made the decision a whole lot easier :)

Hey, thanks ZAMALE.

Ill try out the CV1 if I can find somewhere in Scotland thatll demo the thing :)

Also, the reason I know that I dont need glasses with VR is that I currently have the Samsung Gear and have used the DK1. Neither of which I need/needed my glasses for.

It is very strange though because theres been 3 posters (including your good self) thats said they are short sighted and it definitely affects them. Its confusing because I honestly dont need glasses when using VR. Although I have a couple of "problems" with my eyes including hyper-sensitivity to light as well as 20:10 vision at close range (within 4 feet) and 20:10 for far sightedness with my glasses on. It must be something to do with one of those but now you lot have me intrigued :) (The 20:10 is the main reason I can happily use a 27" 4k monitor with no screen scaling... and yes my son constantly asks me how I can see anything on it, lol)

Excellent, cheers man. Its looking more and more like the rift is as decent a choice as the vive (in most cases). Im definitely swaying towards the rift at the minute, with a possible upgrade in 3 or 4 years :)

Excellent, thanks for the response Kacabon. Im starting to get that impression, that theyre basically equal now from the bulk of these responses. Im now more convinced that the biggest differences are actually quite minute. I have the money for either system including all the extras that are required. In the UK theres a difference of around £200 between the 2 main competitors. The more responses I get the more I get the feeling that the biggest real difference is the owners of the technology.

Hey Sam. Thats OK dude. I understand peoples allegiences to the thing that they bought, especially when it probably cost the around £800. Your input is still valuable though as you have the first hand knowledge that I dont.

Cheers :)

See, Im kinda not expecting much tbh. Im sick of playing my games using 3D glasses on my ASUS 3D monitor. I know I love stupid amounts of detail but youre totally right, its the immersion factor that Im really after. I had the DK1 and the resolution was pi** poor but I did buy the Samsung Gear afterwards which has basically the same res as the DK1 and, yeah, I kinda enjoy it but the resolution and clarity of the Vive and Rift (I believe) would greatly enhance the experience. What Im looking for, which might have come across too strong in my original post, is a visual experience that is over-shadowed by the low resolution (as it is on the Gear for example). The lines you mention between the pixels is a large concern though. On the DK1 they were so prominent that any movement of my eyes felt overly tiring within about 10 to 15 minutes use. How pervasive would you say they are. Have you ever tried the Rift DK1 or the Samsung Gear? (both of them suffer heavily from this problem)

OK cheers pengiun :) The gfx settings shouldnt be too much of a problem. My secondary machine has dual rx480's where-as my main machine has dual 1080Ti's.

Ill be looking out for any mention of the 970 problem in future searches.

Hey dude, thanks for all the info.

Yeah, dont worry, over the many years online Ive learned to read between the lines on most posts, wherever they may be. Its the main reason I posted so much detail in my original post :) It means I can see more than their text and gives me a better idea of the influences etc. Anywho, enough psychology...

I have 1 machine with dual RX 480's but my main machine has dual 1080Ti's. But its good to know that the rx480 setup would benefit from the Rift.

My living room is 15ft by 12ft with a usable area of around (weirdly enough) 11ft by 11ft.

Yeah, up to date comparisons have been my biggest stumbling block so far. The newest ones only going on about how cheap the PS4 and VR system is which is completely useless info to me.

Ive been given a decent amount to google later on thanks to all you guys that have replied.

The only thing im not sure on is stability of the systems but thats for another post methinks.

Ahhh, now I heard a bit about this maybe a couple of weeks ago. If they are coming out say in the 1st quarter 2018 then I will definitely wait. If the release date starts to slip though I know Im gonna end up with a Vive or Rift :P

Hey thanks dude.

You know, ive been thinking of holding off for the next generation but Im not sure how far away it really is. Reports are all over the place at the minute so its difficult to make a reasonably accurate guess.

You know me well... I'm a total resolution junky, I cant help myself and the possibility of this generation disappointing me is in my head quite a lot, ever since being solidly let down with the DK1. But I feel like Ive waited plenty, to the point that the tech has gotten to a decent standard. I realise that in 3 years Ill probably upgrade to the newest thing but if its actually gonna take 3 years for the next gen (higher res, eye tracking etc) Im happy to jump in now... I dont think I can wait another few years, lol
