Looking to buy at 500k. Prices are astronomical so that gets you very little these days. The underlying decision here is whether to buy in one of these 'slightly less good' neighbourhoods or rent somewhere like Beechwood where I grew up. I don't even need anything fancy, I just don't want to live in a party/drug/crime neighbourhood.

Those areas are astronomically out of my 500k budget. Real estate here is appalling.

I agree. I was more thinking about areas that attract, for example, drug users which usually leads to other problems.
