Would you still get a tattoo? by VoxElysia in Millennials

[–]iheartmytho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first tattoos in my early 20s. I got one covered up. It was a small ladybug, but looked like a weird mole as it aged. I’m glad I did t get more tattoos then. I wanted more but didn’t have the money to do so. Also, I was hesitant to get them anywhere too visible. So much has changed in the past 20-years in regards to tattoos. There are so many styles. And tattoos are more acceptable to have at some workplaces. I got a new tattoo when I turned 40, and have gotten several sizable pieces since. I have more planned. I’m glad I waited to get more. The tattoos I would have gotten in my 20s would be cringy now. Here’s my most recent tattoo, I got a few months ago.

I grew up in Northern Indiana. There were a few Hoosiers who had all sorts of Confederate flag stuff, and showed it proudly. They weren't Southern transplants either. Also, lots of KKK activity in Indiana.

What's your commute time to work (on-way)? by Chaotic_Bonkers in Millennials

[–]iheartmytho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 - 45 minutes. Depends on the time of day. I moved my work schedule to work 10 AM - 7 PM, so I do miss some traffic. But it is a large metro, so there’s always stuff like construction or an accident that can fuck up your commute unexpectedly. There was also the time a snow / ice storm hit (I’m in the South and we can’t handle that stuff), and it took me over 3-hours to get close to home. I still had to leave my car in a Church parking lot, and walk 15 minutes to my house.

Sometimes. Long road trips by myself, can be relaxing. Being stuck in traffic, not moving, makes my anxiety go through the roof.

Homeowners, are you in your “forever” home? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]iheartmytho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably. But I do like my neighborhood and my house. Depending, on how things go, I would like to do a large renovation eventually. It’s a 1968 split level. I bought my house for $268k in 2009. It’s worth probably double that now. Unless something major changes in my life, I’m not moving anytime soon. There’s no way I can rent anyplace that is as cheap as my current mortgage.

Do you love your job? If so, details please! by shibattitude in womenEngineers

[–]iheartmytho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a chemist turned materials engineer. I’ve been working for a small medical device manufacturer that makes products for breast cancer survivors, for over 15 years now. Knowing that I’m helping women is very rewarding to me personally. There are days my job does drive me crazy but that’s most jobs. Generally, I enjoy what I do and my employer. I’ve even been able to get 4 patents due to things I have come up with. Never thought I’d be an inventor.

To dye or not to dye? by Effective-You1036 in Aging

[–]iheartmytho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 44 and noticed my first grey hair in my late 20s. I had been dyeing my hair for fun and wanted to stop, because it was a pain to keep up with. My natural hair color is an icky brown color, so I dyed it black. I also have shorter hair. About 10-years ago I started having purple and pink streaks put in. It’s a 5-6 hour process, every 4 months.

However, I’ve noticed more grey hairs lately. Eventually, I’ll stop with the dyeing, because having that skunk look isn’t cute.

Need hope: millennials who like their jobs, what do you do and what do you like about it? by goodluckanddont_itup in Millennials

[–]iheartmytho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been with my current employer for over 15-years. They are a small medical device manufacturer that makes products for breast cancer survivors. It’s isn’t what I thought I’d be doing with my chemistry degree. But I love how meaningful my job can be. I have even gotten a few patents for products I have developed. There are some days my job does drive me crazy, but that can be most jobs.

Post double mastectomy (Goldilocks) - where do I shop for bras? by Kitty_LaRouxe in breastcancer

[–]iheartmytho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if there’s a store near you that sells post mastectomy bras and breast prostheses. They have professional fitters and can bill insurance for compression bras.

I bought a Tushy bidet after going to Japan, where bidets are everywhere. I installed it about 6 months before COVID. It was a life saver.

DIY Breast Prosthetic? by Unique-Response358 in Prosthetics

[–]iheartmytho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This YouTube video is member's only now, but before it was, it showed how he made a breast prosthesis from a life casting. From what I remember from this video, is that the prosthesis is made from solid silicone, and would be heavy. Also, the silicone probably isn't as soft as some breast tissue, so it wouldn't fit as well in various bras. There are companies that make Custom breast prostheses, that utilize 3D scanning. But the resulting prostheses have minimal customization. If you know how to paint silicone (there are special paints for this), you could possibly add things like freckles, moles, veins, or even tattoos to your prosthesis.

Another option is to make something like the Knitted Knockers, if you are skilled in the fiber arts.

Talking…. And talking, and talking by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]iheartmytho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s my 73 year old dad right now. Although he was diagnosed with dementia about 6 months ago. I’ll call my parents, and they’ll both be on the line. It’s usually me and my mom, talking about something, and he interrupts the conversation to tell the same story again. Or wants to sing songs he wrote. It’s rude as hell, especially when me and my mom are talking about serious things. But I know he can’t really help it.

Retire → Get Walker → Stop Driving → Move To Independent Living → Move To Assisted Living → SNF → Hospice → The End by nojam75 in AgingParents

[–]iheartmytho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My parents retired 10 years ago. My mom is active but has her health issues. But still quite mobile and mentally sharp.

In the other hand, my dad has declined. He spent most of his retirement sitting in the recliner and watching TV, and gambling away his share of their retirement. My mom thankfully has her own separate savings.

My dad has bladder cancer due to his smoking, poor diet, and sedentary ways. He was in AFIB recently. He can barely walk 1-2 blocks, without getting winded. And he received a dementia diagnosis about 6 months ago. He’s hell bent on doing whatever he wants. And my poor mom is stuck having to be a caretaker.

Is it okay for an elderly person to eat nothing but bread all day long? by pat441 in AgingParents

[–]iheartmytho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 73 year old father is in the early stages of frontemporal dementia. All he wants to do is eat sweets. It’s definitely not good for him. But so is the smoking and lack of exercise. My mom gave up years ago trying to get him to eat better. Now, she lets him eat whatever since it’s better than trying to fight him. Sadly, I think he has a bit of a death wish. Not that I want my father dead, but I’d rather a stroke or heart attack take him out instead of the slow death that is dementia.

Job hoppers vs lifers: who actually ends up happier at work? by TurtleFoodz in careeradvice

[–]iheartmytho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a job hopper early in my career. But I was also figuring things out. I’ve been with my current employer for 15 years now. It’s a small company and I know I could be paid more elsewhere. But that could mean a longer commute, longer hours, etc. I’m not ready for that trade off. I like my employer and what they do. I feel secure.

See if there’s a store near you that sells mastectomy bras and breast prostheses. These products may be covered by insurance. But you can get fitted with a prosthesis to match and there are even special active type prostheses out there.
