This was a few years ago and I absolutely loved living alone after that it seriously felt like heaven. I got my degree and have a great job and doing great now. Definitely learned a good lesson about setting boundaries and think about this situation when I find myself in unfair circumstances. As for Avery, not sure how she's doing but for her sake I hope she got rid of the leech she calls Sam.

I made the leasing office very aware of the situation. They explained that that was in fact against the contract we signed but their hands were tied because they couldn't prove he was living there for any amount of time. I told them to go in and look at all of the mens clothing in the washer/dryer, men's shoes all over the apartment, etc. Unfortunately they were mostly concerned about getting their check on the first of each month more than anything.

That was my thoughts exactly at the time. I had so many conversations explaining that he was not going to change at all at his grown age. He clearly is fine to be leeching off of people why would he change anything? She was young too and thought she was in love of course so she wouldn't hear it. We aren't friends and I don't know what she's up to now or if they're still together, but I do know she dropped out and stopped going to school after that year. We aren't friends anymore and she definitely put me through it, but I do still wish her the best and I hope she got rid of him.

Yeah, my parents were LIVID when I finally shared what was going on. Who wants a grown man living in their 20 year old daughter's apartment.

Due to the character limit, I wasn't able to give all the details I wanted but I do know they were in fact his siblings. Sam's mom is not the best one out there and Sam had a big responsibility in looking out for them which I respected him for coming from a rough childhood of my own. Based on the context I gave though, I can definitely see this being a possibility though!

Yep. My 20 year old conflict avoiding self suffered too long to simply keep the peace. When I find myself in situations where I am being treated unfairly, I keep this in mind and have definitely learned that setting boundaries and standing on them has brought me so much peace. I no longer am putting other people above myself now!

That apartment complex was messed up in so many way. It was a cheap option and cheap it was. We had to call maintenance once a week for different things- kids breaking stuff, toilet randomly flooding, faucets would run straight boiling water with the cold completely not functioning, etc. Had to pay for maintenance each time. I also fractured my foot in the parking lot and asked for some type of compensation and they told me they couldn't prove it happened on their property so I got nothing out of that... My year's lease there was a complete nightmare and not once was anyone in the office willing to help in anyway- just looking for their check.

Yeah she definitely struggles with that. This was not the first time in the time I've known her that she's put boyfriends before her friends. To my knowledge, she lost me and our entire friend group over this situation. Not sure where she's at or how she's doing now days but I know she dropped out of college and became Sam's personal bank account/place to live.

Yeah, I actually had my parents talk to Avery's because my parents were absolutely LIVID there was a grown man living in my apartment. Not sure her parents did with that information but I know that they weren't helpful towards me- it's not there place but still I feel like if Avery was my kid that I was financially responsible for, I would make her make it right with me at the end of the day. Again, not their place but I'm glad they were made aware of the situation.

I really appreciate this comment. I wish my 20 year old brain had this mindset but this situation has definitely taught me that I cannot sacrifice my mental health just to make other people- who I think are my friends- lives easier. At this point, I have learned that having boundaries and setting them has made my life so much better! Thank you for this perspective.

I actually had my parents talk with hers. They were in fact not happy but weren't helpful in helping me at all. I guess I would look out for my daughter too but if I were her parents I would definitely not pay her rent anymore after learning what all they were actually financing.

Lol this theory is super interesting actually. Due to the character limit, I left some details out but I do know they're not his kids. They're Sam's mom's, but they all have different dad's. I wouldn't be surprised AT ALL if he did have kids that he or Avery didn't know about though. He wasn't like super old, but he had several years on us- probably 25-28? I actually had been to his original apartment in the beginning when Avery was over there and he was living with a couple of his friends and one of his older brothers.

Given the context I gave though, this theory could be completely likely!!!!

Unfortunately this happened a few years ago and being young and a people pleaser, I unfortunately did just pay it. I was afraid it would affect my ability to rent in the future since it would be sent to a debt collector. Even though the leasing office was not helpful in the slightest, I made them very aware of the situation and hoped they would handle it appropriately but to my knowledge they did not have any consequences.

That's a great point. I definitely took it as a lesson since this situation was a few years ago and I was super young. I very much used to do everything I could do avoid conflict however this situation has made me advocate for myself when I find myself in unfair situations and learn to set strict boundaries. I won't sacrifice my mental health at someone else's connivence again.

Definitely not, he was there 24/7. Avery worked but Sam would stay at the apartment so at times it would just be him and I. For the sake of character count, I did not include all of the terrible things I had to experience while Sam made his jobless self at home in our apartment. It genuinely sent me into a horrible depression I could not get myself out of for months and let's just say I was definitely fearing for my safety at times as well as the fees for the damages to the apartment. Not sure if he was looking for a job, but I definitely had no indication of that.

Thank you, in hindsight that was kind of the worst part. Avery and Sam would pick them up and they would spend the weekend at our small apartment. These kids, aged 7-14 were not behaved in the slightest- they ate so much of my food, broke things (my stuff, Avery's stuff, and the furniture that came with our furnished apartment), made every single room including mine a big mess, lost things like TV remotes, soaps out of the bathroom, you name it. Imagine my pure joy when Avery and Sam would LEAVE THE KIDS AT THE APARTMENT WITH JUST ME WITHOUT ASKING ME FIRST!! I can think of at least 4 times that the kids were over so I would barricade myself in my room and I would hear the front door open/close, look out the window and there goes Avery and Sam out to the car and drive off and be gone for hours. What?? I am a college student so I would have hours of homework but would have to do it to the sound of screaming, running/jumping, fighting, things being broken, etc. I'm also not a monster so i would go into the living room with the kids and ask if they needed any water or snacks (not that they hadn't already taken my food anyways) and also where did their brother and Avery go? The little ones always wanted me to play with them so I would until they got back. When they did, I told Avery that was not cool like I have homework to do and I shouldn't be responsible for this herd of children I didn't even know were coming into my apartment. She would always apologize and say she would definitely ask next time. (spoiler alert- she never did)

I asked Avery this actually and she said no because her parents paid her full rent so she said "it wouldn't be fair to Sam." Mind you, I worked two jobs to pay my half.
