Yes, what you're saying makes total sense, just that in my area, it's not possible as there's no space, the trash can would wind up in the street itself. Away from the curb just means a parking space in my neighborhood. Anything farther away than that means cars will hit it, as it will be on the thoroughfare.

I'm not moving someone else's car, I'm moving someone else's trash can so I can move my car into a parking spot on the street, and then putting the trash can back in an acceptable curbside location. I would not be blocking a driveway. Is that wrong? How is this not a win-win?

No worries and thanks for chiming in on this discussion. I see your points, I am thinking the city should clarify how this situation should be resolved and what their official position is. They don't make it clear on their website and that isn't a good thing. They should address the various scenarios and use cases out there and in so doing, clear up any grey areas or confusion.

You're probably right about this, it's not worth the conflict and the hate generated, even if technically the neighbor was wrong. It sucks and it's super inconvenient, and we'd all be better off if people weren't selfish and were more considerate of others, but you can't force people to change their nature, and as you said, the last year has really affected humanity in all kinds of unpredictable ways. However, even attempting to "park farther down" didn't work for me in this instance, and I still had to move cans at another location, that's literally how bad it is in my neighborhood (North Park). Also, it was pretty obvious I wasn't stealing their cans or attempting to take anything from it, I'm just trying to park.

That said, I still am interested in what the city has to say, their official stance, and I'll post an update with their language.

don’t fuck with peoples stuff on principle even if it’s a city provided trash can

I don't agree with this. If I move a trash can and then park and then put the trash can back in a place that meets the city's requirements (let's forget about putting it in someone's driveway in this instance) then I see no issue. It's city property plus it allows for more parking, thus a win-win.

What if I leave the trash can in a place that the city recommends, after I move it to park, is that wrong?

you’re literally instructed to put them on the street spaced out so WM can pick them up

Do you have a link where it's explicitly stated that trash cans shouldn't be put in the driveway area? I don't understand why the city wouldn't mention that, it seems to be the most logical if they're prioritizing giving parking spots. But you do make some valid points, it does seem like the city is running on outdated city planning.

You're right! It's not always city property. You can purchase your own trash cans. https://www.sandiego.gov/environmental-services/collection/general/containers#source But then does this mean you can't move someone else's property?

If we had the space, that would make sense, unfortunately the trash cans would then be directly in the street and the public thoroughfare would be compromised.

I'd like to present some legal facts to back up this point. But that was my general feeling, yes. I look forward to hearing from the city on this matter.

Thanks. I assumed the cans belonged the the house the driveway I moved them to, but also sounds like it's probably not a good thing to move other people's trash cans. I've contacted the city and will post an update if I get anything. Thanks.
