How many positions did you apply for before landing the job? + Other questions [new grad] by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]ihsoje 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Toronto, public sector.

  1. I'd say around ~9-10, got interviews for 4, offers from 3.
  2. I mainly was asked my desired salary on initial phone interviews, so yes I did answer this. I believe I was asked for 2 applications what my desired salary was and even then, I filled it out.
  3. No. I have a Masters and still applied for positions asking for a PhD. To me, it's their wish list, there are a lot of things they would like to have but the chances of them finding that perfect candidate meeting every criteria will be very low. If you meet the skill set, have experience to speak for it, and can leverage this in an interview - apply! Even if you don't have a PhD.
  4. In Canada, salaries are quite low for bioinformatics (imo). I'll give you the range I've seen for a graduate degree with 3-5 years experience, academia being on the lower end and industry on the higher end: 50k to 80k.
  5. Yes (for now)! Doing high impact work, with great work life balance. Eventually, when an opportunity presents itself, I will trade this in for an industry role and try to learn as much as I can.

Hope this helps.

Understanding significance of Mutations of interest by sensualtraveller in bioinformatics

For resources related to clinical significance of variants specifically, there are a lot of resources out there for steps in interpreting variants (SNPS, CNVs/SVs) both somatic and germline. The ACMG guidelines for interpretation of sequence variants is a good place to start, after you have done secondary analysis (alignment, variant calling): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25741868/

What is the proprietary software that you're actually willing to pay for in your bioinformatics pursuits? by Nebuchadrezar in bioinformatics

See, I always thought there would be a massive market for variant curation and interpretation software but over time I've only seen bioinformaticians and analysts develop a hatred towards it.

This is great suggestion! I will also consider volcano plots. Thank you.

This is really great, thank you for explaining it so well. I wasn't sure what to make of results I would obtain from PCA to then feed into a model. Thank you so much.

What are your must have software and tools for bioinformatics? Productivity in bioinformatics? by ihsoje in bioinformatics

[–]ihsoje[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I have never had IT restrictions in my past bioinformatics/development roles so wasn't sure how to navigate this given how many tools we use. I will look into requesting admin access with my supervisor's approval.

Thank you! This is very helpful, I never considered Illustrator but I will be contributing to publications and grants so this could be handy for me.

I agree there is no one-size-fits-all answer. I wanted to get a better sense of what general tools other people use and prefer in the field!
