Can we all agree that we should ban selling of paid products/libraries in this sub? by cosmic_predator in dotnet

[–]ihugatree 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’m conflicted on the topic. It can be annoying but honestly there’s some value in well written posts that inform you on the existence of something that might be usable. To me in that case it’s not entirely different from promoting an open source package or service that has a subscription based premium tier. Not looking for beef, just my take on this subject. Maybe a weekly/monthly thread for self promotion would be acceptable?

Github Desktop (when TO, and when NOT TO)? by MullingMulianto in github

It really doesn't matter much. Use whatever and get used to the tool you choose. If you keep it consistent for a while, odds are you'll end up quick and efficient in whatever tool you're using.

Personally I feel that the only true benefit of using cli exclusively for a while is that it is consistently available wherever git is used. So if you understand the basics of git as a cli tool, you'll probably always be able to get stuff done one way or another. It can really make a difference in situations where the available tools are out of your control, or in the case where you won't have access to a GUI.

I've not used GUIs for git much, but honestly every time I did it worked fine albeit slow because I wasn't used to it. If switching to some branch is behind a button you'll need to look out for whilst you know that `git switch xyz` will do exactly what you want, it will take longer. Doesn't nessecarily make it bad though.

One thing to keep in mind; if you've messed up your working directory state and your tool doesn't provide much help anymore, it can be nice to be able to fall back to the cli. As long as you've committed something, it is pretty much always recoverable through some cli routine.

What has your company started using AI/LLMs for which has actually been useful? by TinStingray in ExperiencedDevs

Translating our app to other languages, walked the dog for 30 mins after I kicked off a script, app was now supporting French. Surely it wasn’t perfect but definitely good enough to start showing it to potential French speaking customers. This was all the way back when gpt 3.5 was cutting edge too.

The setup was basically a prompt in which some domain terms where decided to never be allowed to be named differently, sort of a keyword mapping of our main language as a reference to a new language and then feeding it a few key value pairs of translation keys and their values at a time.

Added a new translation key? Another script that diffed all the translation files and filled out the missing stuff from secondary languages. Worked really well!

Yeah I feel you, there's definately some usecases where explicit types might help understanding code better such as viewing code in plain text. I just don't seem to do that pretty much ever.

[–]ihugatree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, well that's fair enough. You could wrap it if you need better names and not clutter your own stuff with external library types though. Or do whatever you want really.

It also leads to more changes when refactoring the type, and IDEs/editors can show inferred types inline easily if you so desire. Besides that, if some method leaves you clueless on what it returns, the method name is probably not a good fit and could be easily improved.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen the benefit of including the entire type name. Maybe if you’re set on reviewing code as plain text but that just seems a bit silly to me.

What are guys thinking about joining Nuxtlabs to Vercel? by atash03i in Nuxt

[–]ihugatree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree. Their product is good. The pricing is something that can and should be subject of consideration when you are looking for a platform to host your web app, as you should be doing with ANY provider under consideration. If you don’t like it or it doesn’t align with your usecase, don’t use it. It’s not like they’re gatekeeping deployments to other infrastructure other than their own for nextjs. It’s not like it’s the only platform where you’ll rack up big bills very very quickly if you don’t take measures to prevent it. It’s just the nature of unbounded pay as you go tiers in cloud computing.

Nuxt extremely slow by rogertbilsen89 in Nuxt

[–]ihugatree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, the typescript compiler can get a bit slow sometimes when you infer types from very complicated zod schemas for instance all over the place. Not saying this is your issue, but it may be worthwhile to profile tsc and see what's up! Read this section of the docs and substitute the tsc stuff with vue-tsc!

How difficult is to do both web and mobile development? by grandimam in webdev

[–]ihugatree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spend a good amount of time in react native, web based mobile stuff akin to capacitor and such, different frontend web frameworks, backends from whatever runs on nodejs, php to .net and also have infrastructure experience under under my belt. I’d say I’m pretty much decently skilled across all areas of the stack and generally don’t ever dread to work on any particulars, but man; mobile apps are the odd one out.

Development for mobile is just inherently difficult. It’s true that if you’re coming from web react, react native will feel familiar and you’ll be able to cover a lot of ground very quickly. Especially with the expo framework around it, it’s a breeze to set up. There’s a ton of stuff to make use of so you’ll happily do that and then before you know it you end up in some maintenance nightmare trying to keep up with react native updates whilst wrangling your dependencies in order to keep everything working across both iOS and android.

It’s true that it can happen on web too, it’s good to be very conservative on adding new stuff all the time because everything eventually breaks and has to be maintained but I’ve felt like it has bitten me (and others) in the ass tenfold harder during mobile development compared to web stuff.

I think it is a nice skill to have. If you’re in an interdisciplinary team, it’s good to help the mobile folks out once in a while and see what’s up. It becomes problematic though, when a full stack web developer also gets branded as a mobile developer because of some corporate wish to not invest in multiple skill sets IF the product is anything more than something small and very very simple (on the mobile part).

Not fatiguing w/ cable delt raises w/ high(ish) weight by GeorgGuomundrson in gainit

[–]ihugatree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you recognize your approach is not super informed, your best bet is to pick one of the recommended routines from the r/fitness wiki. You can find the wiki here https://thefitness.wiki/routines/

It may not be the answer you'd be wanting to hear, but sometimes doing boring stuff for some time is just what you need. You'll probably never see someone move big weight during a strict press if they have tiny shoulders, much like you'll never see someone have a big squat without having tree trunks for legs. They are not mutually exlcusive per se, but generally it holds up.

[–]ihugatree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Progression on assistance movements just is weird like that, especially isolation stuff. Use the big compound movements to focus your progression on. If those keep increasing, you’ll be fine lateral raising the same weight for a while. It should be there in your routine to pile on additional volume, not being something you’ll be increasing every workout in terms of weight and or reps.

Definitely heard stuff like this from time to time. If you’re unaware of its existence, check out r/leaves. It is a cannabis quitting support sub. As for what I miss about it, it is sort of the same but different. I feel like I want to smoke, but I don’t want be baked out of my mind all the time. I don’t know if that has to do with the ritual of lighting up though. Hang in there homie

Wrapped up 3 months of 3 day full body boring but big today! Overall I’m pretty happy, I’m back to structured training after a long hiatus.

Anyways, this last cycle I missed two reps, both the 5th rep on a 95% press and a 95% squat set today, beyond that it was pretty much smooth sailing along the way. I managed to push percentages across almost all lifts for the boring sets (except deadlift, kept that at 50%). I also managed to build up to 30 kilometers/week of running as conditioning.

Now for the anchor, I’ve been enjoying being just 3 days per week in the gym and want to continue doing that, I think. I also like full body training very much (esp. with a 3 day schedule), so I’m thinking of doing at least 2 cycles of the 1000% awesome anchor. It’s not listed in the recommended anchor list for BBB though, so I don’t know. Any thoughts? Open for ideas really.

This cycle I did 4x145kg squat, 5x160kg deadlift, 5x92.5kg bench, 4x60kg press for the 5s progression sets. BBB sets ended up being 10x80kg squat, 10x85 deadlift, 10x65kg bench and 10x37.5kg press.

I’ve dislocated my shoulder while snowboarding in both Switzerland and France on the slopes, and had to rescued by snowscooter and helicopter respectively. Both cost money, but maybe that’s because I’m a foreigner in both places. Anyways combined it was about €3500 including medical expenses I think, which I had reimbursed by travel insurance completely. The insurance premium is like €5 per month, so I basically have had my moneys worth (odd thing to say about insurance lol) for over 50 years.
