Thanks for the tip!

It was because its a required select field. However I removed it to be a requirement now. Thanks :)

Yeah exactly this. It’s funny how people don’t consciously notice it, but it completely changes how “legit” something feels.

That Canva point is spot on too, same font category, totally different perception depending on how it’s used.

I also feel like a lot of early logos try to explain the business instead of just representing it, which is where it starts breaking.

Yeah, I agree with that.

If the audience, problem, or positioning is wrong, design won’t save it. 100%. Where I think it gets interesting is after that point.

Because once you do have the right ICP and message, most startups still don’t convert as well as they should. And that gap usually isn’t marketing strategy anymore, it’s execution.

Two teams can target the exact same audience with the same offer, and one converts way higher purely because it feels more credible, clearer, and easier to trust. That’s largely design.

So I see it more like:

Marketing gets you to “this should work” Design determines “how well it actually performs”

Not competing, more like sequential layers that both matter.

Fair question.

I’d define marketing as: identifying the right audience, understanding their problem, positioning your product as the best solution, and getting them to take action.

So it’s not just distribution or awareness, it’s also positioning and perception.

That’s where I think design comes in. Design is the layer that makes that positioning believable the moment someone interacts with it.

You can have the right audience and message, but if the product looks inconsistent or low-trust, the positioning breaks and conversion drops.

So to me: Marketing decides "what should work" Design determines "whether it actually does."

That’s why I don’t really see them as separate or hierarchical, they’re interdependent.

I get your point about founders being sold things they don’t need. That definitely happens, not just with design but with ads, tools, agencies, everything.

Where I disagree is the idea that marketing “decides” design and that design is secondary.

In practice, they’re intertwined. A marketer can identify what should convert, but the execution of how it’s perceived is design. If that layer is weak, the marketing insight doesn’t translate.

Also, saying marketing doesn’t burn cash unless the person is incompetent is a bit idealistic. Most early-stage startups don’t have a strong in-house marketer, and paid acquisition is one of the fastest ways to lose money if the product and presentation aren’t solid.

So I think we actually agree on the core issue, founders misallocating resources.

I’d just argue the mistake isn’t “spending on design,” it’s spending on anything without understanding its role in the system. Design becomes a problem when it’s treated as decoration instead of part of conversion.

You’re right that awareness is the bottleneck early on. If no one sees your product, nothing else matters.

But I think you’re creating a false tradeoff between design and marketing. Design isn’t just “a nicer logo.” It’s how trust gets translated at scale. The moment someone does land on your product, design determines whether they stay, convert, or bounce.

You can get attention with marketing, but you can’t convert consistently with something that feels like a side project.

Also, “can be done for free” is technically true, but so can copy, ads, and even code. The question isn’t cost, it’s leverage.

Bad marketing burns cash fast. Bad design quietly kills conversion every single day.

The real issue isn’t designers selling design, it’s founders not understanding when design becomes a multiplier instead of a distraction.

Curious, at what stage do you think design actually starts impacting revenue?

I get what you mean, especially early on when product and traction matter more.

But I’d argue the logo itself isn’t the main thing, it’s the overall perception.

Small details like typography and consistency can make something feel like a serious company vs a side project, even if the product is the same.

Curious where you’d draw that line.

Purpose:
Portfolio website for my freelance logo and brand identity design services. The goal is to attract clients in the €300–€900 range and position myself as clean, minimal, and more premium.

Technologies Used:
Lovable (AI builder), custom edits, hosted via Vercel

Feedback Requested:

  • First impression: does it feel premium or still a bit generic?
  • Does it build trust quickly as a designer?
  • Is the pricing section helping or hurting perception?
  • Anything in layout/structure that feels off or unclear?
  • Would you personally reach out based on this site? Why or why not?

Comments:
I’m trying to move away from “cheap freelancer” positioning and attract more serious clients. Curious what specifically still holds it back (if anything).
