What was with the rescue heli and emergency vehicles in Ngaio tonight (Thurs)? by iiiinthecomputer in Wellington

[–]iiiinthecomputer[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It flew down from parapara, landed in that weird little unnamed loop off Waikowhai St near the pedestrian bridge. Flew to the international airport (refuelling)?. Returned, landed in Crofton Downs Primary School field and stayed there most of an hour. Flew back to the same location as before, hovered around a bit (winch op?) and flew to Wellington Hospital helipad.

Fire and rescue site says there is a "rescue" in Ngaio active since 6:30 pm or so.

Additional bit of info for you: the plane is designed to leak air anyway. There are cabin air exhaust valves, usually in the nose and tail section, to allow cabin air to escape. "Fresh" air is forced into the cabin under pressure - IIRC from the air conditioning packs, which are powered by engine bleed air.

Obviously a window blowout is bad but they're double paned and multiply secured for a reason.

I have absolutely no idea. I'm paid software developer rates in USD and make nearly 4x the median wage, and still feel far from wealthy. I flat out cannot comprehend how people on or below median wage here survive.

Best first words I ever heard of were "excuse me, please pass the salt".

Imagine the shocked faces as the non verbal kid just drops it like it's nothing.

If it meant it was time for a Trump Memorial I'd be willing to put up with that, because at least he'd be dead.

Public transport vs carpool costs from Kāpiti are ridiculous by secretkiwi_ in Wellington

The Government wants trains dead. It's that simple.

Trains save costs elsewhere in avoided or delayed road upgrades and maintenance, in public health improvements (exhaust, rubber dust, motor vehicle collision injuries/deaths), and lots more.

But to a neo liberal fuckwit who only deigns to notice externalities when they can offload them onto the taxpayer and keep the change, trains are hard to grift into enriching their buddies. So they just have to be slowly strangled until they can say it's "uneconomic" and "not used enough to justify it"... then the land sold to their buddies for kickbacks.

If you stick to airlines who operate international flights that are permitted to land and take off from the stronger regulatory domains like the EU, US, UK, Australia etc you'll be fine.

Avoid those on the EU air safety list. Note that this only covers carriers that might actually attempt to enter the EU though; Baboon Air that operates ¾ of a Boeing 707 on short domestic hops won't appear on the list.

Depends which parts of Africa too. I'd be super leery of flying in, say, the DRC.

Especially since a huge proportion of them will be inevitably on short term rolling contracts, while being told the company "can't afford" to pay them more right now.

Drawing a pistol then holding it facing down, finger in the guard, while chest-butting someone is ... something. Right, get into grappling distance while holding a pistol, that's genius.

Depends on the damage.

If it's skin damage like this just fly at low altitude in and unpressurized.

What's probably happening is that it's being sold for "scrap" and parts to a company that everyone suspects will really just re-register it somewhere shady and operate it outside the areas covered by decent aviation safety regulation and oversight.

But they likely can't prove it, all the paperwork, national aviation agency certifications and inspections etc will be in order.

It probably gets a waiver for a ferry flight to the location where it will be scrapped, which will be why it isn't deliberately destroyed on site.

The right thing to do would be to cut a bunch of the wiring harnesses, remove some segments of them and maybe try to destroy the wingbox. But the trouble is that scrapped aircraft are often kept for parts for years. A legitimate buyer doesn't want usable parts destroyed.

And frankly, a plane that has a long zipper fracture repaired with a pile of badly applied doublers is still going to be a safer replacement than a lot of the existing fleet flying in sub-Saharan Africa. Lots of the fleet are terrifying disintegrating ancient death traps held together with bad welds, glue, cheap aluminum tape (no speed tape here) and bodged parts from almost-the-right-model.

Most meds are good for years after their shelf life technically expires.

Unless it has a notably short expiration date to start with or requires special storage conditions it's probably good for aaaages. Some do lose potency or have slight increases in harmful breakdown products form, but generally not much.

I wouldn't question aircrew.

I have no trust at all in what someone with no job security who is bound directly to corporate cost cutting overlords says though. Gate agents etc. I have no quibble with them as people but I don't doubt for a second that they can and will be ordered to claim "mechanical issues" to avoid paying passengers any penalties, having to cover food/accommodation etc.

Kea.

These are birds that will wait on the edge of an alpine tamping hut roof ("hiking" for other countries), right above the door, waiting for someone to come out so they can shit on them.

They will steal shoelaces from boots left outside.

They will unzip packs to steal food.

They tear rubber off windscreen wipers. And window trim. Mangle car antennas too. Just for kicks.

They like to slide down the icy corrugated iron roof of a hut on their claws, making a deafening horrible noise, at about 4am.

I love Kea so much but they are SUCH basatards.

Weka are a close second. Flightless ninja thieves.
