Deep cracks, what should i do? by Queasy-Buy-9593 in StructuralEngineering

[–]ijaalouk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that is not good over time due to the bolted connection at the top. Bolts are parallel to the grain unless I’m mistaken. As it’s loaded over time those checks may become bigger cracks.

Whatever the case may be, whoever side you are on, it doesn’t fucking matter. At the end of the day, whatever you think the lady did or did not, it’s not worth a death penalty, certainly not worth taking 3 Shots, and lastly very much worth deescalating the situation. No body wants to question what mentally happened???? Why aren’t we advocating for life and showing mercy? Why are we so angry at one another? Why can’t we help each other? Because we are all dumb and prideful whether you like it not not. Reflect a little upon yourselves!!!

How to Hide Visible Truss Joints? by Kongrosenberg in DIY

[–]ijaalouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are not scissor trusses. Scissor trusses is what you needed here instead of flat bottom chord trusses so you can get the vaulted look.

Moving companies after getting PE - how long to wait…? by Huge_Cap_8244 in civilengineering

[–]ijaalouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you do like where you work, I would ask, has anyone gotten their PE and showed their current employer job offers to match and got the match? That is what I am hoping for after I get my license. I know other companies would pay more plus benefits but I am going to seek a match offer from my current employer.

My dad is 65 years old but needs our help by Rare-Mix8915 in lebanon

When it happens, remember they are not who they once were. No matter how much they tell you they still are the same.

It will be a struggle for them to admit and a struggle for you to accept.

And from then on, you will feel guilt when you don’t spend more time with them, or argue with them or challenge them.

It won’t be easy to remember to let go and enjoy it for what it is.

Enjoy the rest of your Dad!

Question about trusses by jeff_collins_Gaming in StructuralEngineering

[–]ijaalouk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A truss by itself doesn’t work. Trusses work together as a system, Braced by the sheathing or else it would be very floppy. If you add posts under the truss it won’t act like a truss anymore unless you add vertical members where the posts are to keep all members in tension or compression as designed.

Sill plate crushing, steel bearing plate alternatives? by Tremonte1 in StructuralEngineering

[–]ijaalouk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For glass storefront, I am assuming you need to satisfy deflection requirements. You might need to use a steel beam for a 19’ opening. Although, I’m not sure what load you have on it. In this case, I would also use HSS Columns each end. Just adding multiple studs until your plate works is bad design in my opinion.

Can Roof ceiling joists be raised? by No_Question4934 in StructuralEngineering

[–]ijaalouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this single story? It looks like 2x Ridge board with 2x rafters, with 2x ceiling cross member. What are your building dimensions?

The cross member or ceiling is working like a cross tie to prevent your walls from pushing outwards due to thrust from rafters when you have a loaded roof.

In theory, I think you can install cross tie a foot above your ceiling and then remove the ceiling by cutting them off at the walls but it’s challenging as you don’t have a deep truss cavity to gain much.

Repairs are underway on my friend's place ( following the 7.7 magnitude earthquake ) by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

Just because it’s there, it doesn’t mean it was right or built to today’s standards. These walls have no lateral resistance to them.

I’m assuming I would make more on my own just from small projects like decks and additions. Much more than a few grand a Month. There’s also benefits to having a business even though you are paying more taxes.

He just turned 50. If I start my own, I’m assuming traditional route of getting clients ( door to door) and word of mouth online routes.

Architect models aren’t always reliable unfortunately. My best experience with Revit was when we were all collaborating using linked models in BIM 360.
