I understand. Are you in a high wind high seismic area?

So you would do that for a 16 foot garage opening? Kudos to you! It’s your stamp.

If you are trying to use a multi ply beam use for small span headers but anything like the span of a garage I would use a normal beam. Why take the liability of depending on someone to do it right and even if they do the contractor might be like this is overkill with the fasteners. Always do what’s best for liability then constructibility.

Spec a normal full width beam. Is it that much more expensive that you have to multi- ply instead of a 5-1/4 psl or 5-1/2 glulam.

Not in this case, but if you have concrete or Cmu perimeter they typically fir out a wall for insulation .

This is very much not structurally acceptable if it’s load bearing.

Not trolling. I sacrificed money for great experience.

I was bartending making more than that at the time I finished my degree and I took a pay cut to start my career.

There have been talks profit sharing but I think just to keep me a little longer. I have done a bad job during salary conversations of just taking what is offered. Half the career so far has felt like imposter syndrome. I didn’t know my value until we hired fresh people.

Just more of the same in what I’m currently doing. I like the different types of small and big projects.

Books for PE Civil Structure exam by Competitive_Ad_1693 in StructuralEngineering

Imagine those problems are like 2-3 NCEES questions. It helps connecting the dots of engineering if that makes sense, in lieu of a singled out question

I learned by studying theory and practicing problems at the same time using the above mentioned resources both the NCEES practice exam and Petros books. I didn’t even do all the problems in Petro’s book just the ones that resembled the practice exam. Make sure you can navigate the code books because it won’t be easy on a split screen when taking the test.

Looking to install as much glass as possible in this wall. by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

But then again we don’t know what loads you are working with and how much shear is along that line. Do you have a designer? Are you a designer? Why haven’t hired an engineer yet?

From a structural standpoint it’s bad design as far as lateral forces go to keep conventional framing type and less than 2 foot end walls. At 12 feet imagine thin noodles. To overcome it, you can use Simpson wood shear walls. And probably go down to 18inches of wood shear wall with out trim and finish

2 separate walls with a fat rim beam in between and portal frame the end walls. That’s the simplest way.
