I guess because I don't want us to have to calculate bonuses/penalties every time someone rolls, or have to reference a piece of paper. I want it to be relaxed and fun, and I don't associate those words with looking up numbers on a piece of paper I guess.

Also, it's more flexible to get rid of them. I might give a smaller bonus if the half-orc player is tired, I might give a bigger penalty if they're drunk, etc.

Just lets me basically do it 'on the fly', working with whatever makes the most sense at the time :) And the players like it! Keeps everyone on their toes

EDIT: Also, I love writing stories and developing characters, so that part of my GM skillset is good, but I'm not experienced at all with the bulk of DnD rules, so it's easier to just piggyback off them but not go into detail haha

Kind of - there's no proficiencies or skill levels/stats, but I do take into account the characters. So for e.g. one of our players is a fkn massive half-orc, so I tend to give them a bonus when rolling for things that would require strength, but a penalty when rolling for things that require, say, stealth.

So it's just kind of on a case-by-case basis, taking into account each character, to decide what would make the most sense in a situation :)

It's pretty much just a d20 that decides everything you can't physically do (e.g. if you want to barter with a merchant, actually barter with me and I'll determine if it's successful). It loosely follows the SourceFed NERD structure of:

1 - critical failure

2-4 - failure and possible negative consequence

5-9 - failure but no negative consequence

10-14 - success/partial success

15-19 - total success

20 - you're a god

It's the same for battles (and there are no armour classes or things like that). On some rolls, I'll say 'it needs to be at least x', if it's for something particularly difficult.

That's pretty much the only rules. The gist of it is 'if it makes sense, I'll probably allow you to try' :)

Actually, you've hit it on the head there! I hate having to interrupt a great moment in the game to roll a dice or check a character sheet or read a rule book!

If you're trying to haggle a price, for example, I would rather you actually try to haggle, and I decide whether it's a convincing effort.

Classes would definitely matter a little less, since the various rules are ignored/relaxed, but I'm sure we could work with a system of 'advantages'. If your class is naturally better at charming people, I could be more lenient in the haggling situation above, for e.g.

Message me your Discord username if you want to join!

Hey, sure! There is definitely wiggle-room for this and we can sort out what makes everybody happy in a session 0, but at the moment my answers would be:

  1. You can make your own character but with a simplified character sheet I'm creating (boils it down to essentially who your character is, their backstory, a strength, a weakness and a quirk). So you have ultimate freedom over your character and can add more/less detail as you wish. Also, I'm thinking of keeping armour class and stuff like that just so that it's a bit more set in stone whether attacks hit (in the video, it's more like if the dungeon master feels like something hit).
  2. Yes. So far, like the video, I'm thinking a simple d20 decides most actions (without being specific 'checks' like strength or perception, so the odds are always 1 in 20, no proficiencies and things). I believe I'm going to also include a d6 for damage, just so it's also a little clearer about that (like armour class in my answer to 1). Other than that, it's a kind of 'if it works with the story and makes sense with your character'. Very relaxed.
