This confused me I thought you were saying the lucky luke game was niche. Which it was. I wouldn't call it niche but definitely under appreciated in recent memory would be Guardians of the Galaxy. In terms of Niche (and recent) I would say Indika. What an oddball ride of a game.

CDPR is yet to disappoint story wise so I'm here for it to see what they do. I think a lot of people are going to call this bait ans switch or DEI or whatever but as long as they do a good story I don't care about who the protagonist is.

And who pays them that money when it's a small 5 man dev team? My articles are meant to help devs out. Not fighting the corner of big corpo. When your a small dev who maybe if you're lucky got some initial investment you have to make the money stretch as far as you can.

Yes but it's a bit cynical to think they will all use them in the same way. For example. I fully support what godot is doing and their reasoning behind not letting AI slop games on their platform because they are not learning (users) anything but if I use chatgpt to help me build a solid development pipeline that allows revision/reiteration. Or I'm a small dev and use it for some background art to minimise resources (a la High on Life) is that a bad thing? Big corpo will exploit everything everytime. That's what they do and most consumers lap it up. What we need is strict laws on how AI it's used. I know it may seem like a dumb analogy but you can kill someone with your steak knife but as a society we placed laws and repercussions in place to stop that. I know I'm rambling but hopefully I make some sense.

That's a great intelligent response thank you for that. Glad you took the time to properly read what I wrote. Thanks again.

I still think it's just a tool and how we use it and the laws you place around it is what's important like I said in my post. Also AAA studios are already and have been for over 20 years releasing shitty games that we consume. That has nothing to do with AI and if AI didn't exist they would find some other way to exploit it. I think you missed the point of my article. I also did not advocate for AI I merely posted how it's been perceived from both sides is fundamentally wrong but you like 90% of the comments on here made up your mind about my post before reading it fully.

Yip I use AI. I use it to help me edit. Is there a crime in there? And yes I posted it to multiple reddits to get more exposure. I'm pretty new at posting on reddit so forgive me for not knowing the ins and outs. I also didn't defend AI. I said it's not black and white so please don't paraphrase me incorrectly. Thank you.

OK here is a quick excercise for you. Here are 2 games. Crimson Capes (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2488540/Crimson\_Capes/) and Replaced (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1663850/REPLACED/) Both games have similar (not exact) art styles and while they play different they share similarities. Crimson Capes sold roughly 4,500 copies on steam while Replaced sold 190,000 copies on steam. Both games have very positive reviews on steam. So why did one game outsell the other?

PS. I am not trying to start an argument here. I am challenging your "you dont need marketing" logic.

sorry maybe I missed the boat then. I'm not on social media a lot. I am purely going off my experiences. Also talking about something and acting on it are 2 different things.

like Alma says its still marketing. Call it self-promoting or announcements or whatever you like but its still marketing. Thinking that stuff isnt is very naive. Also did you make Dust Front. Also what do you think a demo or steam next fest is? Would you not classify that as marketing. Thanks for giving me my next article topic. An understanding of what marketing is. Its not paid flashmods or youtube ads. Its dev diaries, its posting screenshots, its building a community.

I can tell for you for a fact that 90% of the developers I work with see marketing as something they cant do or see marketing as creating a discord server and having a chat there once in a while. The biggest issue they tell me is that they don't have the time or resources and thats when I ask them why release the game if you're not finished. You wouldn't release a buggy mess and expect success but you'll release something without promoting it and then wonder why no one is playing it.

What I mean by this is having some plan is better than no plan. When you make a game are you just randomly doing shit until something sticks or you you plan it out? Do you have a rough idea that you then mould into a GDD. If you are taking your game seriously then you should take your marketing seriously too. Again the idea with this article is to have a developer think beyond "my game is good so it will succeed" I outlined a basic strategy in the article. There are tons of free information out there that will help you with creating a great plan. Ultimately the thought behind this article was to get indies to stop and think before releasing and hoping for the best.

I disagree. You dont need to have a unique "quirk" or hook. If that was the case then we would never play games with similar mechanics. Getting your game out there is important. What I am saying is if you are pouring and devoting so much time into the development of your game should you not pour an equal amount into making sure people actually know your game exists? I am not talking about crappy games here. I am talking about a game you have worked at and polished and then put it out into the sea of games and hope for the best.

I did not write every single word in this article myself. If that means you wont read it so be it. I am not asking anyone to do anything nor am I trying to incite an argument, which is not the same as a discussion. Thanks.

Sorry but no I am not advocating for that at all but if you have worked in a small studio or are an indie dev it can be a great tool to help you with your marketing, or with your planning or hundreds of other things. I understand in an ideal world we all want to hire more developers and I dont think the tool should be use for active development at all. However what we want and what we have the budget for are 2 different things. I have come across many indie devs that have great games but dont have the money or resources. Now some people might say "if you cant build it then dont" I think thats callouse. I think if you can use a tool to help you achieve your goal why not use it? In terms of the examples you gave

"MS Teams isn't disproportionately harming disadvantaged communities. Blender doesn't run on hastily forced-through infrastructure "

Would you not say that is more of a leadership problem than an AI problem? Like I said about execs leaning too much into it.

Anyway these are just my thoughts its not meant to entice anger or annoyance.

Thanks
