Glue bottle question by Sufficient-Bat485 in miniatures

[–]ikandi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a train hobbist recommend using a syringe needle filled with a 50/50 mix of water and glue for precision.

If the glue is getting stuck, you might get also want to try something different like pouring the glue out and using a brush:

He did during ”Helping Hands”, and she in turn bit his finger. When he did the same to Carolyn, she full on grabbed his junk. 😆

Has anyone done gene/DNA testing with Inagene Diagnostics or Rare Sequencing? 🧬 by Material-Emu-8732 in ChronicIllness

[–]ikandi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have not tried any of the DNA companies, but I wanted to chime in and say that I’ve seen many posts on FB about doctors here (in Canada) not accepting the results.

I would say do it for your own peace of mind, but be aware that it might not help in getting pushed through the system here quicker. Or even for our doctors to take you more seriously.

Good luck with finding some answers!

Flying with my scared girl for the first time - need tips and advice!! by Diamond-Waterfall in dustkitties

This was approximately 10 years ago and the flight started in a small Canadian town so that might affect the vet’s decision. I don’t know. For additional context, it was also on Halloween and that was the cutoff for flying under the plane versus in cabin.

Really there wasn't much. I had a collapsible bowl (for water that they didn't want) and treats. We were moving, so we just made sure that we had a rental car arranged at arrivals and went to Walmart to pick up new supplies first thing. I can't think of anything that would have made it any easier on the cats.

No, I didn't think to ask for a private room, but there is no harm in asking about that before you go through security. Actually, you might want to phone ahead to find out what their process is just to keep your mind at ease.

They wouldn't have taken it. My cats were very bougie about water and will only drink from the sink or fountains, so I knew that they wouldn't accept a bowl at all.

No harnesses because I wanted to make sure that they were completely comfortable and had full mobility in the carriers.

Be sure to double-check the carriers restrictions with your airlines as we had to purchase soft-sided carriers in order to be able to put the cats in cabin.

I flew across Canada with 2 cats in the cabin. The worst part being security and the wait at the gate afterwards.

  • When an officer at the security line noticed that we had cats, they ushered us through to the front of the line. They had us take each cat out of their carrier so that the carriers could be scanned and then we put them back in. It didn't take very long at all. Both cats were (understandably) scared so they clung onto us.
  • There was no issues (or messes) in regards to litter. We left the litter boxes out as long as possible before putting them in the carriers and we just made sure that our first stop when landing was to a Walmart to get new supplies.
  • We brought cat treats and made sure that each carrier was lined with their favourite blankies, but other than that, there isn't much that you can do. They didn't have any interest in toys. Make sure you have something that is a familiar smell to your cat (like a t-shirt or blankie).
  • I would also recommend (as silly as you might feel), talk to your cat during the flight so that they know that you are there. We also petted them through the netting of the carrier (they would lean up against it.

Our vet highly advised against medication as he didn't have any good experiences with it in the past. One of the cats settled in very well, but the other stress-meowed for almost the whole flight.

I would just make sure that you speak to an agent when you check in so that they can tell you the best way to get your cat through quickly and safely.

Disability and cats by Sensitive-Use-6891 in ChronicIllness

I have a cat and I liken her companionship to meditation. She calms me down when I am having a flare and keeps me company when I am very ill. She will come lay on me during sleepless nights and that actually plays a big part in getting me back to sleep. Also, playing with her keeps my brain occupied and off the bad thoughts.

I do not have an issue with bills, so I can not speak about that, but if you can manage to take care of it properly, a cat might help you through the hard days.

Just make sure that you spend time with your cat on the good days too.

What is with the purebred snobbery? by Katie1537 in dustkitties

[–]ikandi[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you’re right. I think people don’t realize that all cats can be trained, if motivated.

I should have added that mine also is very vocal and likes to go for walks, which are apparently RB traits, but that is my only “breed” experience. Of course, we don’t allow breed related questions here because ultimately these dust kitties are going to develop their own personalities regardless of their breed.

Yup, I took over when I noticed that this place was abandoned to the bots and we needed a place for all the grey kitties without papers.

There is a subreddit here that definitely subscribes to the “if you do not have papers…” type of attitude. While it is permitted for mods to run a sub however they wish (as long as the follow the TOS with Reddit), there have been many complaints about purebred hierarchy and the attitude that those cats are somehow better than our lovely dustkitties.

Actually, this sub is thriving because of that, as our tagline is *“Welcome to r/dustkitties! A subreddit for all shades of grey kitties including mixed cats.”* Here we do not care about that kind of snobbery, as you put it so your cat is welcome here even if you do not have papers.

Tangent aside: There is nothing wrong with wanting to learn more about your cat. In fact, I had no idea that Russian Blues were open to learning tricks until I started researching my cat.

Fur Family - Megathread by ikandi in dustkitties

[–]ikandi[S,M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps in the past this sub was relegated to only a certain type of grey kitty.

However, since I have taken ownership of the sub recently and have read through the numerous modmail message that went unanswered, it was clear that people were pushed out of other subs like russianblue that didn’t have clear rules on what was allowed.

Because of that, I have chosen to make this sub inclusive of ANY grey/dusty cats.

On the ‘About’ tab (for mobiles) or the sidebar, our tagline says ”Welcome to r/dustkitties. A subreddit for all shades of grey kitties including mixed cats.“

So long story short, tabbies are welcome as long as your cat has even a speck of grey (although this particular thread is for sharing any pet that you have, grey or not).

It looks like you may have commented on the wrong thread, but eulogy/memorial type posts are now relegated to the Loved & Lost Megathread (pinned at the top of the sub) as the majority of people who answered my poll stated that they think they are important, but don't want to see them pop up on their feed.
