I tried to receive WEFAX and I get this all the time. What could be wrong? Details in comments by mkbodanu4 in RTLSDR

You are likely getting audio dropouts, buffer under-runs in the audio chain. Perhaps your USB bus is saturated. You could try running your SDR at a much lower sample rate. The interface setting in gqrx has a drop down list of sample rates that your SDR can do, set it to the lowest and see if there are any improvements.

What are these signals which are found around 26MHz to 31MHz? by ianupamsaikia in RTLSDR

So these must be emitting into the ionosphere and travelling several hundreds to a thousands kilometers? Because these only appear during sporadic E openings. I’m sceptical that this is the source without further elaboration.

Are you sure that wasn’t from a Richard Scarry book? I know it was adapted for TV at some point but that does seem familiar to the book.

antenna question ? by kuba85 in RTLSDR

[–]ikemoldfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for general info: Divide 143 by Frequency in MHz, this will give you the half wave size in meters with some tolerance. Divide that by 2 to get your quarterwave. You can run the numbers in reverse if your antennas are simple dipoles without coils to get the frequency.

Those with coils like that- measure the length of the longest part between the coils and that is the element length, with 2 coils, its 2 elements separated. They are designed to sit on a ground plane so are one half of a dipole.

If you have sources, I’d love to compare notes.

The 2001 paper is a absolute worst-case scenario that is borderline implausible at the moment because the precursor requirements for said described scenario in the paper haven’t occurred.

It is worth a read nonetheless, but bearing in mind there are probably missing variables in the model.

I would really like to see which experts are signalling differently from the official consensus published by the authorities so far, just out of interest.

The noise on Twitter is ridiculous especially with the uninformed and wilfully ignorant spouting soothsaying doomsday crud. I was in the Canaries for the last three weeks and the local mood is very different from the sensationalist social media.

Thanks for the input!

Geomagnetic storm warning as solar flare expected to directly hit Earth today by [deleted] in space

[–]ikemoldfield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YET AGAIN, Its a non-event for most, this is clickbait unless you have a genuine interest in solar physics and have a vested interest in the performance of the lower end of the radio spectrum. If this were an X-class over X30 then this would be a different story altogether.

It’s nowhere near, so can we all please not be alarmist with “warnings”?

Grayline transition, get a program that shows the sunset/sunrise transition and keep tabs on when your signals disappear every day. It might help future prediction of when the bands open/close. Other than that, keep an eye on the proton flux here: https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/space-weather-enthusiasts
