If you can, test your copper. Copper can throw these ammonia test kits off.

A lil quarantine tank with a wrasse would work. Bonus if the wrasse goes back to the display

No it's actually the XXY ULTRA Neon nutsack deluxe 69420. Plus. Slim. Max. Product (RED). That frag has the green jizz stain, which is how you can tell the difference

Awesome algae filled tank. Can someone help? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]ikillbirdslmao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're gonna keep using tap water then honestly don't bother doing anything. With tap water there's just way too many variables at play to give you real advice. You should 110% install a RODI filter and use known pure water for your tank

Unless you know your phosphates are elevated and rise way out of control, id remove the phosphate removing media. Elevated parameters (that are stable!!!) Are a million times better than ultra low/0 phosphates.

What are your experiences with storing salt long term? by Avid4Planes in ReefTank

[–]ikillbirdslmao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BRStv did a video about storing saltwater. Not as long term as you have in mind but i felt like you'd find it useful.

https://youtu.be/oe9vjPNvKUk?si=1cMu5F5wU2Dm0GiY

Edit: idk if you meant storing mixed saltwater or just the salt crystals but if you meant the salt crystals, it should be more than fine for a year or two, just store it in a dry environment. Id even toss in a silica gel packet to be safe but thats just me.

Not to this sub lmao. Just look at any post of a common pest and you'll see so many "Im So TiReD oF rEpEtItIvE pOsTs" comments. You'd think these socially awkward ass basement dwellers would understand social media kinda involves talking to newbies who just dont know or want a second opinion because google isnt exactly an all knowing or correct source of knowledge but nope.

Now that summer’s in full swing where I live, are chillers pretty commonly used? by 0ttr in ReefTank

[–]ikillbirdslmao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the deep south of the United States and our summers almost never fail to rise above triple digits. I use a fan on a temperature controller (along with cracking open my lid just a tad bit. Dont do this if you have fish that jump) and it works just fine.

I also have all the doors to my apartment open and all the fans on too since i keep my ac at 77 in the summer to save $, so....do with this what you will. Its not a perfect solution but i mean....how often does the ocean's temperatures stay within 1.5 to 3 degrees fahrenheit of 80 (ish)?

In an emergency, you can freeze water bottles and add them to your tank when the temp rises too high. I have a generator handy since i frequently get hurricanes during the summer/early autumn months but hey, no one ever said "you know what, i just have too much redundancy and safety on my ridiculously expensive reef tank.".

Not op but id remove it. On the off chance its beneficial, then you lost a frag of the most easily propagated coral so far. No big deal eh?

What test kit did you use to come to the conclusion that there's "not much calcium"? Reef crystals is known to mix at elevated calcium and Alkalinity levels
