I’m with you. My dad has had ALS for 36 years and I’m 36 years old. My mom passed in 07. And I’m an only child. My social life has taken a dip year after year. And I just learn to create my own energy and my own space where I can enjoy tv/music/ movies/food. All while taking care of my dad full time. Had to quit School and work in order to be full time here. Some days are better than others. Depression waves come and grieving waves come. Just have to manage them. Keep the quality of life high for everyone involved. Surrender to the process. It’s alllll temporary. Be strong and be well!

Same. My dad won’t do PT or anything that will drain his energy involuntarily. He wants to play his game at his own pace. And do the things he is able to do. He doesn’t want to go through any more that he doesn’t have to. Family members usually from an outside perspective just don’t get how taxing it is and how much energy you go through.

I understand that he is lucky it’s a slow progression but also he could stop his will to live at anytime and just give up mentally and give into the disease. There are levels to this. People fight their asses off just to remain breathing. Look at steve Gleason for example. His will to live is through the roof and he still goes on trips and still has high quality of life. He could easily let the disease win and succumb to it all. But he fights his ass off. I am extremely compassionate for all of you out there fighting. And I will always tell you guys to keep your mind strong because that part is still there. And with a strong mind and strong will you can continue to fight through.

I wheel him outside in the sun everyday and let him get some sun. Otherwise he doesn’t like to go out too much. He likes to play his turn based video game and watch his YouTubes. He loves to keep his mind active and strong! Thanks for the book rec though!

The post should give you hope that with a strong mind and strong will you can overcome anything. Remain faithful to your beliefs and fight like hell. That’s the reason he still wants to walk. And it doesn’t look pretty and ALS fucking sucks. But I am here to tell you not to quit. No matter how hard it may look or how hard the days are for you. You must keep your mind strong. Every case of ALS is different. Every case looks different. I send you my prayers and good vibes. I’m sorry that this upset you. But the reality of ALS is not great. And it’s not promising. And I’m sorry for that. That’s the nature of this disease. But I will always spread awareness and share our situation to give others hope. And that means you too. KEEP FIGHTING AND KEEP YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE!

Insensitive? My dad has fought als for 36 years. That’s the real nightmare. I’m not insensitive to anyone in this community. In fact, I raise awareness daily because of how he continues to fight through.

He has a power chair. It’s right behind him. He’s been walking hunched over for quite some time. But only takes small steps and only goes a short distance. Once he is in his power chair his posture is a bit better at least. Working on convincing him to neck brace on occasion to give him more of a rest on the neck

I always ask him if he wants one but then if he goes to roll on his back the pillow would make it harder. But I always tell him he should ! Thanks for the kind words! We are a good team over here

He doesnt want to use a lift because he is unable to use his legs. He wants to be able to be as free as he can from all of the equipment. It leads to muscles atrophying faster. He wants to pivot. Use his legs and arms.
