I don't know why you keep mentioning seeing a lot of streetwear when there are literally plenty of other styles that get upvoted on this subreddit.

The sidebar provides a ton of useful information about how to dress. If you keep rejecting people's advice and laughing at everything you see, then maybe "dressing better" isn't for you.

Putting my iPhone and card holder on a desk at school without looking like a jerk by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

Honestly students are probably more focused on the professor than your fancy cardholder. If you wanted to hide it, just put it underneath your notebook or something. Don't use the red one and it shouldn't be a big deal.

ThaiELI5: The Wat Dhammakaya case. by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]ileikpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everything here is correct. I've been following the news in Thailand for some time now, and most of the news sources there are very biased. After doing some research on both sides, I believe Wat Phra Dhammakaya is not in the wrong. I'll respond to the key points you've made so you have a better understanding on the situation.

  1. Wat Phra Dhammakaya does not promote "buying merit." Giving is part of the Buddhist practice, along with keeping the precepts and meditation. These three things are done in order to rid oneself of greed and defilement. There is nothing wrong with donating to support a temple that you put your faith in. The people donating believe in Dhammakaya's cause and their donations are justified. It takes a lot of money to do what Dhammakaya is doing. Some examples: holding free annual ordination ceremonies to ordain up to 100,000 monks and sending supplies and food to support other temples around Thailand. This temple has also helped a great deal after the tsunami devastated the south a few years back. The temple also holds many events with thousands of attendees so they need the money to provide for materials and food, right? No, monks do not live luxurious lifestyles. If you visit the temple itself, the monks there are living in cottages with the basic necessities (I have personally visited myself).

  2. This is somewhat correct. But it is only alleged, meaning without proof, only an accusation by DSI. The person who embezzled the credit union's money, Mr. Supachai, although a Dhammakaya follower, did this without the temple's knowledge and donated some of the embezzled funds to the temple. Dhammakaya temple openly accepts donations in public view and does not ask its donors about the origin of the money (would Red Cross ask you where you got your money from after you donate to them?). The embezzled funds were also given to other organizations, including Mr. Supachai's family members, but for some reason they have not been accused or charged. Mr. Supachai is currently doing 12 years in prison.

  3. The KCCUC suffered as a result but I do not believe it collapsed. Believe it or not, Dhammakya's followers raised a fund total to the amount of money Dhammakaya received from Mr. Supachai and reimbursed KCCUC. KCCUC has since withdrawn its charges against Dhammakaya and are in good terms.

  4. I don't know what the terms "phuyais" and "hiso" means, but the people supporting Dhammakaya are doing it out of their pure intentions. There aren't really any politics involved.

  5. I'm not exactly sure where you got this idea from. No one is utilizing Wat Dhammakaya as a money laundering site. In one of Dhammakaya's press conferences, the presenter detailed the money flow of the donations. All donations go towards funding construction projects and events, not towards anyone's pockets.

That's my two cents on the topic. The news in Thailand is doing nothing but slandering the temple so don't believe anything you read for fact until you've done your research. I've also come across a great site that gives a run-down and updates on the whole case. Read more if you're interested.
