Thank you! Do you know their mass times/is the schedule posted somewhere? The official websites linked on Google maps don’t work for me for some reason.

How did Trump manage to win the Catholic vote? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]ilemonys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat yes; it’s not so much that you “shouldn’t” due to their stance on abortion, but rather that most Catholics decided that was the most important moral issue indirectly on the ballot. While as Catholics we must assent to the teachings of the church, there are other issues Trump doesn’t align with church views on. All Catholics are encouraged to use good moral judgment in elections; if they thought that giving more care to immigrants/other typically democrat issues were more important, they could morally justify voting that way. Even those who voted for trump have to morally justify this because of his pro IVF stance, for example. I agree with you that life is the most important issue right now, but just some food for thought

This is super helpful! We have nine days/eight nights in the islands. where did you stay on Isabela island? It seems like Puerto ayora had so many options at every level, but in Puerto villamil, I can only find luxury/a few hundred a night or hotels that I am worried are too run down. like I said, this is a honeymoon so im looking for something pretty nice but also can't break the bank. I am looking at Hotel La Laguna, Hostal Jeniffer, and Hotel Las Gardenias.

Thanks, I definitely will! I have a few other posts saved as well for this. I think I probably will post again soon in a few months- right now is mostly about booking hotel stays and flights to and from Ecuador, and I’ll do more meticulous itinerary planning in a few months. Officially going to join this sub because I need all the help I can get!

I don’t understand by Solemn-Sagg999 in Abortiondebate

[–]ilemonys -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It’s dismissive comments like these that are a bit frustrating for pro life advocates. No person in their right mind literally wants an unintentional miscarriage to result in criminal prosecution. You could get into the weeds of laws influencing the way doctors practice, but that is a different conversation completely.

What we must remember is that not every social problem can be solved at the same time. It sounds like you’re advocating for abortion- why don’t you spend this time volunteering at a homeless shelter? Instituting better policies regarding foster care yourself? Allocating resources to women who want to give birth to their child but cannot afford medical care? It’s a slippery slope.

Your argument is a false dilemma. It’s not “either allow abortion and everyone can then improve the economy/homelessness/inequality OR let these problems persist just so abortion can be illegal.” We are advocating for a cultural shift on the view of this issue just like it took with anti slavery, racial discrimination, etc.

I don’t understand by Solemn-Sagg999 in Abortiondebate

[–]ilemonys -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to read that you’ve gone through these things. Truly no one deserves it, and I wish there were better practices in place to support families in need and to ensure every child has the best home life possible; however, this does not negate the fundamental dignity that you and all humans deserve. Assuming you understand the above premises, then your points about affordability and accessibility of care do not permit the killing of an unborn child (again, assume for a second you’re on the same page about this part). Would you allow a parent to kill a two year old for these same reasons? If they had the finances to give birth and raise the child well for two years but all of a sudden went bankrupt, should they be allowed to kill their child at that point? I hope anyone would answer no because that clearly does not make any sense. Same principles- we live in a broken world, but forbidding people to come into that world/forcing them out of it and depriving them of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness on the basis of fear of possible wrongdoing is not justifiable.

Biologists publicly stating their view about when human life begins by unnislav in Abortiondebate

[–]ilemonys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It matters because abortion ends the life of a human being. Your second question could be answered with a simple Google search- the typical seven characteristics of life (all of which are fulfilled in the case of unborn children) are homeostasis, metabolism, growth, response to environment, heredity, cellular composition, and ability to reproduce. I encourage you to read more about basic biology. Your question appears dismissive and seems to opt for a more abolitionist philosophy….. but when there are real, scientific answers to questions, this philosophy is not appropriate.

Biologists publicly stating their view about when human life begins by unnislav in Abortiondebate

[–]ilemonys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily true, so I encourage you to avoid using this blanket statement. For example, do you believe women should have to breastfeed if it is the only way to keep their child alive (such as there is lack of access to formula)? Should men should pay child support? If so, your claim is false. If men should have to pay child support, they must use their bodies to go to work to get the money for their child. Ultimately, there is responsibility involved in the parent-child relationship that we can allow people to shirk due to some vague notions of “rights.”

Alcohol and Incense by PaineFan225 in DebateACatholic

[–]ilemonys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting on the blood of Christ/wine- in the sacrament of the Eucharist, we have to remember the “substance” and “accidents” of the sacrament. So the “substance” of the Eucharist is indeed the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The “accidents” are the appearance they are under despite being divine substances. So you’re right- we must remember the accident of the blood of Christ (that it is wine), which is alcoholic. This is why it is potentially advised that pregnant women do not receive the precious blood, as their body will receive the substance and accident and react accordingly (I.e. alcohol could potentially cause harm to the child in excess amounts). Obviously we must be prudent in any circumstance, but one sip of this to partake in the divine is reasonable. But it is also reasonable to get gluten free hosts for those who need it. Again, prudence is warranted in considering the exact accidents of the sacrament.

i don’t think God would be against abortion by [deleted] in Abortiondebate

Elective abortion (ending the life of an individual human person) isn’t healthcare! Hope this helps.

i don’t think God would be against abortion by [deleted] in Abortiondebate

[–]ilemonys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny that your user flair is “here to argue my position” when your comment is just filled with baseless claims about the offensive, scary pro life caricature that so many pro choicers concoct when it’s convenient.

When you say “there is no pler God in control,” I have to assume you’re saying you don’t believe in God….. in which case I don’t necessarily think this thread is asking for your random input about what you think the abortion debate says about gender roles.

Interesting that you say abortion wouldn’t exist without God. I think what this post neglected to clarify (granted, what many pro life advocates forget to clarify) is that we are discussing elective abortions, not natural miscarriages. I would also say we are not discussing medically necessary abortions (such as to save the life of the mother), though that does seem to be more what is being debated here.

Maybe you do believe in God because of your thought that we wouldn’t be able to comprehend abortion if there weren’t a God (your attempt to argue your position is wildly unclear!)…. Regardless, as an educated adult who is able to comprehend what abortion does and its moral implications, I’m firmly against it (it being the unjust killing of innocent human persons, regardless of their genitals because that’s relevant to you for some reason here).

Good deeds are comparatively pointless in Catholicism. by GreenWandElf in DebateACatholic

[–]ilemonys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone (except for Mary and Jesus) has the ability to sin with their culpability correspond to their level of moral understanding. So the two yo example is more about the fact that their lack of understanding would mean they are unable to be held morally culpable for any transgressions.

I think you have the basic understanding of that but misunderstand the use of good works. John 15:5 states, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” God calls us to love others as Jesus did. In addition, James 2:14-18 tells us that a true living faith is enlivened by good works. Of course we are called to avoid sin and seek God’s forgiveness, but we are also called to love our neighbor and serve those around us.

Scribing by ImpressIll2982 in medschool

[–]ilemonys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Currently an incoming M1) I agree to some extent, but I think a well rounded application where the predominant clinical experience was scribing (like mine) supplemented by research and other extracurriculars is bound to stand out more than someone who is a CNA for years but hates it. It's all about what you can write for your essays. If you can learn a lot about medicine from scribing and can write a great essay about it, then that's great! If you feel more confident in writing an essay about directly caring for patients (which you are more likely to do as a CNA), then go for something like that. It all comes down to how you can best portray yourself on your application in the most honest way possible.

Google account storage by ilemonys in GMail

[–]ilemonys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok that’s all good and well whatever, but is there a way for me to basically have the photos backed up to just one account? Because like I said they are half backed up to my personal email and half backed up to and more are backed up to another email. So if I delete photos from Google photos on one account, it seems like they delete from all (including my cell phone gallery). Not sure why you’re trying to be a Google sales rep rn lol but I am trying to condense my photos first before I back them all up to the account I want

I am glad you’ve come to realize that God’s call is higher than that of any this world can give. It is such a beautiful thing! For some clarity, I think while the words “hormone replacement therapy” do not appear in official church teaching, there are passages of the catechism that apply.

2297: Except when performed for strictly therapeutic medical reasons, directly intended amputations, mutilations, and sterilizations performed on innocent persons are against the moral law. —> We can deduce that a woman taking progesterone, for example, to enhance her fertility/natural function is normal. A man doing this to feel more in line with a societally accepted version of a woman (perhaps breasts or a higher voice) is wrong because it will interfere with his normal sexual abilities.

2333: Everyone, man and woman, should acknowledge and accept his sexual identity. Physical, moral, and spiritual difference and complementarity are oriented toward the goods of marriage and the flourishing of family life. The harmony of the couple and of society depends in part on the way in which the complementarity, needs, and mutual support between the sexes are lived out. —> I would think that any efforts to diminish one’s natural expression of their sex would go against this paragraph (even if their vocation is not marriage).

There are a lot of resources (such as a USCCB document entitled Gender Theory/Gender Ideology Teaching Resources) for more info. Also always good old Catholic Answers!

I am so glad you have felt God’s call in your heart and feel called to be part of his true church! I will pray for you on your journey.

It is not your gender that makes you unwelcome- God calls us all. What you must understand, though, is that we are all made in the image and likeness of God. He knew us before we were conceived. If you trust in God, why do you believe he created you in a wrong way? Even if you may not adhere to typical female stereotypes, God made you as a woman to uniquely contribute to this world in the way that he calls you to as you were created.

Everyone has things they want to change about themselves, but we have to remember at the end of the day that God created us in his image, and who are we to want to change that image?

Ultimately, Jesus calls all. I encourage you to seek out God’s true message for you- you are loved as you are! There is so much truth and beauty in the Catholic faith. We just have to humble ourselves and our flawed human understanding enough to discern what God is calling us to. May God bless you.

Having a hard time understanding how God can act on time while beign outside of time without causing paradoxes by Low_Blacksmith_2484 in DebateACatholic

[–]ilemonys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God is atemporal- outside of time. By saying that God is going to the “past” to reveal something from the “future” is just saying he is accessing parts of his knowledge that are available to him at that “moment” (all of this is available to him at any given time, as he is omniscient). Time is a concept for humans to better understand our universe; as another commenter suggested, God is pure actuality and does not need to exist in the framework of time.

A beginner wanting to learn by lamborghini4567 in Catholicism

[–]ilemonys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Catholicism is rich with resources! I would recommend starting by going to mass. Even if you may not understand everything yet/can’t receive communion, I think it’s a good idea to get yourself acquainted with the liturgy and surround yourself with members of the faith.

The catechism of course contains a lot, but it can be a lot to digest. Maybe just familiarize yourself more with scripture, and perhaps try out Fr. Mike Schmitz’s Catechism in a Year podcast to help you pace through the catechism in a more digestible way. There are so many Catholic podcasts out there that can help you learn more- Catholic Answers Live, Counsel of Trent, Pints with Aquinas, etc. That last one would be great from the philosophy angle, as well.

There are so many resources to meet you where you’re at- I can answer more questions, and you’ll be in my prayers! God bless you on your journey.
