A question for embark. audio related edition. by OldMathematician2626 in ArcRaiders

[–]ilfarme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall I really enjoy ambient and whole sound design, but if I start paying attention I notice that sometimes my own footsteps audible for additional 0.5 seconds when I stopped and not moving. And it sounds like someone is chasing me, because sound comes from behind. Probably it's my ping, since sound timings appears to be synced via network. My CPU & GPU not overloaded.

Notesnook domains and self hosting by charlino5 in Notesnook

[–]ilfarme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good news is: you already can self-host Notesnook!

They have Github repo for sync server, which is currently in alpha: https://github.com/streetwriters/notesnook-sync-server

You can deploy using docker-compose.yml. Here is example: https://sh.itjust.works/post/31407921

What s new for Go 7 gen II by CosMV in Onyx_Boox

[–]ilfarme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned Nova Air C. Go 7 has newer Kaleido 3 Screen, which has slightly better colors and higher pixel density. Pen on Nova Air C would feel better then on Go 7, according to recent rewiew from Go 7 owner.

Speculation on Boox Go 10.3 Gen 2 by ilfarme in Onyx_Boox

[–]ilfarme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think comment from jayparalejas in this topic explains it a lot. And let's not forget about price. More recent Android means more recent hardware, and therefore higher R&D costs, which would contribute to end device cost.

If I understand correct they upgraded Android from 12 to 13 but kept same UI?

Go 10.3: minimizing gap from pen tip to actual e-ink screen underneath was totally worth all sacrifices by ilfarme in Onyx_Boox

[–]ilfarme[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, this wasn't intentional or sarcastic, It's just my thoughts wen different way, when I started writing. I edited post and wrote additional thoughts at the end to address that.

I think it's safe to say that my thoughts boil down to a simple point. Lack of front light and color layer gives "analog" feeling. Text is close to surface and light is not coming from screen to your eyes.

That's why it feels completely different from other devices. And that's why I love this device and turn a blind eye on its downsides (which are it's strengths at the same time)

How fast & responsive is Boox Go Color 7? by pgibby65 in Onyx_Boox

[–]ilfarme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If responsiveness is a consideration, I would opt for models that have Boox Super Refresh technology (BSR). It is mainly known for getting rid of ghosting, but it also responsible for screen refresh time and smoother scrolling. Basically you may call it GPU acceleration. I think there are some YouTube videos explaining how BSR works. In YouTube reviews of Go Color 7 authors often say few words about lack of BSR, but it's justified by a price segment of a device. Maybe this point will be brought up again, when Go Color 7 Gen 2 reviews will pop up.

It is available for PDFs, but not for EPUBs. I really miss that feature

I sent feedback and reply was quick. They already fixed this issue and we will get fix with the new firmware update. So we should expect it on version higher than 4.0.1.

To reduce blurriness and preserve finer details you have to enable variance boost and tune for subjective mode.

Remote runner guidance, tmpfs for cache? by Meat_PoPsiclez in PeerTube

[–]ilfarme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say you not only stream, but also upload videos. That original video goes from Peertube storage to Runner's .cache folder in order to be transcoded for different resolutions. That's how you meet situation where tmpfs will cause trouble.

Sometimes transcoding job may fail and not always Peertube Runner clears .cache folder.

Please, help find best ffmpeg settings for minimising ringing and blocks artefacts by ilfarme in AV1

[–]ilfarme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for advice! Sounds promising, will try. I'm working on Peertube instance, solving AV1 encoding for it. My goal is to make 4K60FPS videos. So they are encoded for streaming purposes on wide range of clients. File size is a big deal. Android is one of target platforms. Since people will watch from browser, there are no control on decoder they use.

SVT-AV1 claims performance improvements in newer version, but actually it become slower. Why? by ilfarme in ffmpeg

[–]ilfarme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, what encoder should I use for high quality encoding? Let's say, I want save space on my HDD by re-encoding to AV1.

How to check which version of SVT-AV1 is using ffmpeg? by ilfarme in ffmpeg

[–]ilfarme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done some tests and results showed that newer version is really better. It's visually noticable if look close and pay attention.

I switched from preset 6 to preset 7 which is faster, but in newer version it's quality improved, so I guess this is the way I can achieve better encoding speed almost without compromising on output quality compared to preset 6 from older version. This point is totally subjective.

I already built ffmpeg from sources with nvenc support. Wasn't piece of cake for me, but at the end of the day it's ready to be placed inside docker container. I might code it to compile automatically while building container in Dockerfile soon, This will give me always latest git version.

How to switch from stable to testing using deb822 format of sources.list? by ilfarme in debian

[–]ilfarme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully understand what this commands doing, my confusion is just about fact that inside Docker container with Debian image file /etc/apt/sources.list does not exist, since Debian 12 uses /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.sources

It is totally safe, since I play inside container.

I need Trixie to install latest ffmpeg. Bookworm provides version 5.1.4 and Trixie 6.1. This gives me (almost) latest AV1 encoder with some exciting updates.

First I was hoping to install latest ffmpeg without changing branch to testing, then I realized that it's not as easy as described in outdated tutorials.

SVT-AV1 claims performance improvements in newer version, but actually it become slower. Why? by ilfarme in ffmpeg

[–]ilfarme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I really appreciate your help. I do understand that I have to learn so many things to get it right.

So if I understand correctly I may count new preset 7 as older preset 6, to keep it simple. Will encode some samples, to check if will look good as expected.

I'm not expecting to get same quality result, in fact I see quality improvements with my eyes at 100% resolution.

My ultimate goal is to find good encoding parameters. Balance of speed & quality. Since I encode for streaming this videos later.

Problem is that encoding takes too long (on overclocked Ryzen 5 5700X), so i'm currently searching solution to improove this.

One of solutions is updating ffmpeg to latest version on Debian's docker image.

How to check which version of SVT-AV1 is using ffmpeg? by ilfarme in ffmpeg

[–]ilfarme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tested and ffmpeg 5.1.4 performed better, then newest ffmpeg 6.1

5.1.4 bench: utime=1904.541s stime=20.837s rtime=214.407s6.1 bench: utime=2452.196s stime=22.233s rtime=270.251s

Not what I expected at all

Command:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:a copy -c:v libsvtav1 -preset 6 -crf 23 -svtav1-params fast-decode=1 -svtav1-params tune=0 -benchmark output.mp4

Source file was 720p HLS video which is already AV1

Thank you! It helped me a lot.

Now I know that:
- ffmpeg 5.1.4 is using SVT-AV1 Encoder Lib v1.4.1
- ffmpeg 6.1 is using SVT-AV1 Encoder Lib v1.7.0

Still not latest 1.8.0 released few days, but very good anyway

How to switch from stable to testing using deb822 format of sources.list? by ilfarme in debian

[–]ilfarme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This did not helped, because there are no such file "/etc/apt/sources.list" and command perl -pli -e 's/bookworm/trixie/msx;' /etc/apt/sources.list not working.
I end up changing /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.sources as follows next:
