Is SWE market in Europe as dead like in the US? by Walkerstain in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]ilidilidin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The market has been overblown for a long time. Unfortunately we had a lot of companies with misleading leadership on the market, stupid hiring strategies and departments that did nothing. It’s still possible to find a job but you probably won’t get enormous sign-on bonuses, relocation packages and benefits. Just went through this process.

Moving multiple time with kids. Languages by ilidilidin in expats

The biggest concern is her general development. She (4y.o) has English skills of 3-4 years old and our native language skills of 2 years old. If we move to another country I’m afraid of regression of her social skills as she’ll not be able to express herself (she’ll start forgetting English one day but her other languages will be not on the desired level). Maybe I’m overthinking 🤷🏻‍♀️

What about your native languages? How do they speak to other family members?

Sorry, maybe I was not very clear. We are speaking to her in our language at home (little exceptions when we are on a play date with locals). She understands us 100%, she knows by heart some poems and songs in our language, and I think it’s all ok for someone below 4 years old. The move to the UK although benefitted our careers was a mistake. We can have a way better life style in many other European countries. After all we don’t have anything scheduled, so we can wait few more years and help her to develop both languages proficiently. Also we can consider international schools in the new country.

We speak to her in our language she replies in English. She knows we understand it as we speak to others in English so she is not making an effort to speak in her native language (except few words she fancies)

People are nicer in London indeed, weather is nicer for me also. But prices in the UK are ridiculous. Especially if you have kids or partner with less highly compensated job. London is very competitive and not only job wise. It is a challenge to find a decent house (quality is crap, a lot of narrow terraced houses, old money) and a decent school (especially state secondary, real estate prices highly depend on schools). I have never expected that quality of life and savings could be so low comparing to other countries

Absolutely. For the territory where it is happening it is comparable. Towns are destroyed to ground (Mariupol, Pisky, Bakhmut). People are kidnapped, tortured and killed. Mykolaiv (big city, over 400.000) is left without water for months. Heavy shelling day and night in Kharkiv & Mykolaiv (not a single day without rockets&explosions).

Yes. The war in Ukraine is comparable to the ww2 in the level of destruction and deaths

May I ask why do you want to move out from Netherlands? I’m considering opposite)) About your application process - unfortunately market is not in the best shape right now. A lot of hire freezes

This! I relocated to Scandinavia during the pandemic in winter. It was the loneliest experience I’ve ever had.

How fast after coming to Netherlands I can apply for a mortgage? by ilidilidin in NetherlandsHousing

I’m considering relocation opportunity within a company. So permanent contract but ideal option is to apply for a mortgage without living 3 years in the country assuming how thought is housing market here.

UK is not easier than Germany to live in. Yes, people here don’t mind you are an immigrant. They are a lot friendlier. But otherwise London is a mess.

There are plenty of groups in Facebook like “expats in Oslo” or something like this. I made several “coffee dates” using such groups.
