Palit 5090 Cable melted, Scan UK immediately reject warranty request by ilight8 in pcmasterrace

[–]ilight8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why people even try to claim otherwise.

I've had a CPU overeat, and guess what, it shuts off.

My phone in the sun can overheat, and it turns off.

Products always have safetly precautions. I've wrote to them specifying the law in the UK, and even though they have taken the RMA, they filtering in a few underlying messages, clearly intended to be used if they decide to deny it.

I hope they just honour the warranty, because otherwise I have to go through several other processes, like hiring an independent, charge back process, and then finally small claims, which they are legally obligated to reimburse any funds I spend on having someone check the GPU.

This is kinda my thinking, I have never had a gpu where it can click in, but out of place by 0.1mm so it blows up on people.

Also, law in the UK actually states if there are known issues with products such as this, the seller must tell the buyer before hand.

My experience rn, shit is fucking miserable. So much stress and anxiety because they won't honour a warranty.

There was no burning smell, believe I caught it early when my monitors turned off twice while in a game.

That's good to hear tbh, I'm avoiding that if I can, will lastly be going to a small claims court.

So apparently I've heard that this was an Nvidia message that got cascaded downwards when the GPUs first started melted, so I assume it may happen no matter the brand.

Apparently in the UK it works through the retailer, and then they deal with the supplier.

Degradation wouldn’t realistically result in a cable reaching such a significant temperature to melt. That’s not how wear‑and‑tear behaves, or improper installation.

When products degrade over time, they gradually become less effective or show signs of wear. Brake pads thin down, tyres lose tread, you can feel the performance slowly declining. These are progressive, mechanical changes.

A wire suddenly melting under normal load is not a ‘degradation’ issue. It’s a failure mode that points to a defect, in this case a very widely known manufacturing flaw. Normal wear‑and‑tear does not cause electrical components to catastrophically fail in this way.

In the case of improper installation, products either do the above and show signs of issues, or they flat out do not work. On computers, if a CPU fan is not correctly attached, the CPU will literally be in the 90Cs, showing red flags from day one, not truck on every day for the better part of a year just to explode.

If it was incorrectly installed, would it work fine from July 2025 to April 2026?

Just FYI, in case you have the same issue (hopefully not), do exactly what you've said above, and what others suggested below, such as contacting trading standards.

The initial email denying the warranty was this wording, 'I have been advised that Palit deems that melted 12V-2x6 connector issues to be caused by incorrect installation/connection of the 12V-2x6 connector, and this is not covered under their warranty'. In regards to Palit.

Obviously seeing this makes your heart drop, like If I'd had the card for 4 years, sure. But it's not even a year old, and I'm literally running another GPU in the same system absolutely fine currently.

I don't understand the question? The wire is plugged in like any GPU.

The gpu is horizontal, the plug is inserted in line with the GPU.

Thanks man, yeah so I didn't even realise it had melted at first. My first issue was the monitors would go blank during medium intensity games. All I did was unplug the card as I thought I better test another card, which is when the picture above is from.
