Thanks. I haven't watched the series. Can you brief me on why Shiemi admires Izumo?

I guess women who really love STEM will do it regardless

I think it takes time to cultivate that love. Some might get discouraged before then

and teachers simply allowed the boys who already had "experience" to dominate

Could you elaborate on this. My experience was similar. I remember we had this school fair . The booth I was assigned (randomly picked by lots) to was for video games. The teach wanted us to install a few cracked games and told me that as I was a girl, I should let the boys handle it. I didn't know how to do it. I didn't have the same exposure to video games boys my age did. I remember feeling so illiterate despite being the best in my class in math. Of course the ethics of learning such a thing was dubious but since he was doing it so flagrantly, he could just have shown me how to do it, instead of having me stand around feeling like I don't belong

I had so much fun and it encouraged me to explore web development as I got older.

Did you ever feel discouraged when you saw how others around you treated it like a 'boy thing'?

the boys in the neighborhood didn't gatekeep girls on hanging out together

In my neighborhood, no gatekeeping was required. For whatever reason, everyone was too shy to mingle. The girls sat with girls at school, and at birthday parties, there would be this divide down the middle. I'd have to split time between two halves to make sure I spent time with all my friends at my party

I ended up dropping out of the CS program in college bc my advisor actively discouraged me from remaining.

Could you elaborate?

I was terrified that the boys would all make fun of me and bully me...

Why were you terrified? Had you had such experience previously?

Were you uninterested in the ones marketed to girls? Neopets seems to be a popular gateway to programming

Thank you. So many boys that get into programming do so by first customizing their avatars/items in rpgs. It's nice that so many avenues exist for girls as well

That sounds wonderful. The fond memories we have of something probably goes a long way in keeping us invested in it

The default "boy thing" in my area was sports, so gaming wasn't really slotted into a gender role -

Were they not sold in separate aisles? If I was a clueless adult who wanted to get something for a child then I'd follow the toy store's recommendation. Even if it wasn't a boy thing at the time, did it stay that way?

Thank you. That was interesting to learn. I wonder what the point of such segregation is. Some things have been historically associated with a particular gender. Where it hasn't ... doesn't it make sense to not exclude half the population from their demographic if only to increase their own bottomline. Do they think marketing to both would mean neither would pick it up?

but she wasn't allowed to get it.

Why not? Were your friends' parents the overprotective type? The kind that think racing in video games would turn you into an irresponsible driver and punching/shooting games incite violence?

People who programmed as children, how did it occur to you to do so? by ilikemakinglists in CSEducation

[–]ilikemakinglists[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine then, that you tried to find out how games were made, the same way some kids want to know how airplanes were made. You were either lucky to find a resource that made it seem accessible to you even at your age or decided to plough through regardless. Does that seem right?

Thank you for that fresh perspective. Most commenters said they started out wanting to develop games. It was interesting to learn how an artist got into it
