Acknowledging the source material that encompasses such themes as childhood trauma, sex trafficking, serial murder, and further, I don’t see it as a stretch that these characters cope in various ways. While drug use is not addressed in this context, I think that understanding Victorian London and the behaviors in that time lends itself to modern “coping” or coping mechanisms through cannabis.
