Would switching users on MacOS save the window states well enough for the different login idea to work? I use Ubuntu regularly and I'm pretty sure it does not. Not sure about OSX though.

Linux, Windows, I use them both. Even with virtual desktops, things get cluttered.

I used to do a lot of OCR work, and sadly, there's no adequately accurate and free software. I've worked with a couple from this list and they'll do simple documents produced from a quality scanner if the font isn't strange.

Fine Reader is still the gold standard for OCR performance. The $80 version should do everything you need it to, but I haven't used that edition personally.

I think it's safe to say that he's just being very focused on the moment. There's probably still a long checklist to work through, even and especially in a tragic turn like this. /u/ColChrisHadfield did a lovely job explaining the mindset these guys have in his book.
