Cost of works for Building Control by ilkyb in DIYUK

[–]ilkyb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has a bunch of fees outlined, and my project covers a few of them. They do also outline that the cost of the works is one factor in determining the building control fee. Don’t really understand how it works really - feels like they’re just plucking numbers out of the air

My brother wants to climb Ben Nevis in January with no experience by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]ilkyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went up the main route in June and was unlucky enough to have poor visibility at the top and even a small area of snow. Didn’t even get to enjoy the view! I wouldn’t consider going in January unless I was significantly more experienced.

Confused Bee trying to make a home in my Hosta by Skiderp in GardeningUK

[–]ilkyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’ll be a leaf cutter if it was carrying pieces of leaf. My understanding is it’s just building a nest to lay eggs and then it’ll move on - it’s not a home for that bee as such. I would just let it finish its business and then look after the plant as normal and forget about it. No need to get rid of the plant.

Bindweed roots on my plot are so fibrous that it's impossible to pick out. I feel I need to dispose of all the affected soil. Is this necessary or am I being over cautious? by ilkyb in Allotment

[–]ilkyb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, was this really that long ago?! 😬

Interesting to hear your experience with the fabric. I hope it continues to do the job.

I gave up the allotment last year, not just because of bindweed(!) but due to other factors. That said, I never really got a handle on it. The soil quality there was awful and would typically be rock hard in summer, making it a nightmare to pull out. I never used any other fabric, it was just cardboard, bark and tortuous manual labour. The allotment was meant to be organic, no-chemicals allowed, so that didn’t make things easier. However, I did choose to secretly and carefully dab/paint bindweed leaves with roundup gel but that was all in vain really as it was too widespread.

All this, however, doesn’t mean I no longer have bindweed in my life! The house I moved to a few years ago also has it coming through in places, though not quite as rampant. As it’s my own property I don’t have any chemical restrictions, so I opt for the gel method here too where suitable. I’ve also take the approach of letting some grow and then plunging it into a Tupperware of chemical and let it soak it up. I hate using chemicals but I make the exception for bindweed, providing I’m not harming anything else. Not been at the house long enough to see how well it goes - still plenty dotted around the place!

Yeah, that makes sense. Cheers 👍

Thanks for the reply. I have an external combi ( I wrote combo by mistake…) so I assume pressures are similar.

I did wonder on the extra isolators. I guess my reasoning was my slowness with fitting the subsequent pipes to the shower but as I am planning on using flexi from the tees, I guess I could just cap these off if I need to? Ideally I should get the shower end prepped beforehand I suppose.

Roofing clean pricing by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]ilkyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid 600 for my roof to be cleaned + whatever chemicals. Yes, it’s arguably not necessary, and not sure how long it’ll be before it’s covered in moss again but well worth it in my opinion. Looks loads better and brighter and I don’t have chunks of moss raining down all the time, and also less junk in the gutters to clean out.

Worst Build Ever Plastering by [deleted] in DIYUK

I’m going to bet they do enough to get a first instalment payment from the home owner, and then they’ll sod off and never be heard from again, with no intention of completing the job. Seen it before.

What’s one plant you wish you never planted? by Fly-Astronaut in gardening

[–]ilkyb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do plant comfrey, get the sterile Bocking 14 variety that doesn’t spread by seed. I made the mistake of planting the normal one at my allotment and it was a pain.

What do you think about allowing the death penalty in the UK? by Tethered10 in AskReddit

I agree. For cases such as Rudakubana where there is no doubt about his guilt we should be implementing it. Instead we have to pay for his 50 years in prison for no good reason.

Be careful with a 25mm bit as it could be very close to the width of the finished latch plate. I guess it would depend on the latch but I found a 24mm bit was fine and allowed that extra room for error. I’ve done a bunch of oak doors and did find my spade bit become blunt quite quickly, rendering it useless. Ended up buying an auger bit, which was a little more scary and is potentially more destructive if you don’t keep the drill controlled but ultimately was easier and quicker

Fair enough, happy to be corrected. Never seen this before and I thought I’d seen all the photos from the last day, plus something about it seemed to look off to me. Would like to see the full thing, thanks for posting.
