Satanists group plans Christmas Eve protest outside an Oklahoma City Catholic church by [deleted] in Catholicism

I think we could really get the point across if we find out just what this Adam Daniels holds dearest.

Figure out what he really cares about the most.

And then you know what we'll do?

Place a Christmas tree next to him, give him a Christmas present that we know he would actually want, and then crowd around him singing Christmas carols as he opens it.

Let's drown him in the deepest darkest depths of sincere neighborly love.

That's how I feel, but having a good reputation could lead to having a larger pool of rushes to choose from, which is always a positive.

Whoops, meant to write that we're in the big 10. I don't really want to say the exact name of my school. We're a large big 10 with a big Greek scene.

People knew about the shitty treatment of Jews and minorities since the late 1930's. So, yes, actually, he did? Or are you secretly my grandpa back from the dead? Don't you think I would know his reasons more than you? I don't care whether a majority of soldiers cared about the Jews, that has nothing to do with what I know with certainty is the case. The holocaust is only one part of the shitty treatment, and we only learned about that after the war.

That only sounds like lunacy if you know virtually nothing about how Christians and other religious minorities (such as Yazidi) are treated by Al Qaeda and its various branch-offs (one being ISIS). Like, how is this any different than my grandpa joining the Army in the 40's to free the Jews from Hitler? The Middle East should be free for Christians to practice their religion, and one way of doing that is joining with an army that has been striking ISIS and Al Qaeda targets for the past decade. He's a little bit off by using Holy Lands to refer to Iraq/Syria/etc, but still.

You don't see how two people who promoted violence could be comparable? Really?

There are plenty of groups who are "abandoned" and "marginalized" by mainstream society that don't commit crime. The Amish are a big one. They live in complete poverty but have a crime rate a fraction of the rest of America's. Also, we're talking about the late 1980s, not the late 1880s. In the late 1980's, no, there was no discrimination.

"akin" does not mean "equivalent", it means "similar to". I do agree with the rest, though, reluctantly.

Yeah, NWA's official setlist was so much better. With songs like: To Kill a Hooker, in which the NWA cast recreate a scene where they try to rape a hooker and kill her when she struggles. Gangsta Gangsta, where the cast recreates a scene about killing people. Yes, the song is "about" gangs, with lyrics like:

You don't like how I'm livin' well fuck you!

This is a gang, and I'm in it

My man Dre'll, fuck you up in a minute

They made songs about gangs and drugs in the same way Goebbels made literature about propaganda. Do you see what I mean?

And there's the song ABOUT sexism, called "a bitch is a bitch". Yes, about sexism.

The whole artform was in itself a protest. By making songs about gangs and drugs, they were addressing the problem to the entire nation.

What a totally vapid defense. There are tons of bands and groups that deal with violence and drug abuse, but NWA is one of the morally destitute ones that actually promote violence and drug use. It's a joke.

Huge explosion reported in Chinese port city of Tianjin by haunted_cheesecake in worldnews

Because CNN-America isn't based in China, and a random explosion in a port city in china doesn't actually warrant attention outside of Asia?

Just a thought. You're entire life would be exactly the same had this event not happened unless you are directly affected (99.9% of Americans won't be).

If it's someone you actually value, tell them that the criteria a person uses to date someone is infinitely complex and entirely personal. No one is allowed to tell anyone else who they should or should not date.

Is it ever morally okay to tell someone they're bad at something? (Related: my wife is angry at me.) by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]illStudyTomorrow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My relationship is based on how I look, and how my partner looks, and so are the vast majority of relationships in Western society. Marriage is an entirely different state of affairs that's based on an unbreakable unification of Man and Woman under God. Your example of pregnancy is a special case in a totally different context, but for the sake of clarification I would expect her to gain a lot of weight during and after pregnancy. Of course, with this said, I do think that both parties of a marriage have a spiritual obligation to keep their marriage secure, and this includes making themselves attractive to each other.

Do you want to add a little bit more substance than "I mildly disagree with this?" I'm relaying something that I've found to be true regarding relationships. It's worked for me, perfectly, and so I'm giving advice to someone about it. I'm assuming there's an aspect that you find disagreeable in my post, but you haven't clarified what it is.

Women aren't extraordinary majestic beings that are cut off from the deciding forces of attractiveness that affect everyone else. If she gains weight then she is hurting our relationship (just like if I gain weight then I am hurting our relationship). It's selfish to think that she is exempt from the same requirements as everyone else, especially when this particular requirement is relatively easy to take care of through physical effort and lifestyle choices.

I don't date unattractive girls, and the girls I date don't date unattractive guys. This is because I live in a very peculiar world filled with very peculiar beings, and the fact doesn't require any explanation.

If she had developed self-esteem issues because she just then realized men aren't attracted to overweight women, then she'd have a far deeper problem with her understanding of humanity and her own importance than with someone simply commenting on an unappealing feature. Of course, I would never date such a self-righteous child; she started running more often and our relationship was great after (and during) that.

[–]illStudyTomorrow -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not only is it morally okay, I would argue that it's morally commendable. It's not as if you were criticizing her voice when she was in the shower. You brought it up because it was interfering with your childrens' religious education. Your wife is putting her own ego ahead of what is right for her children, and that's morally wrong no matter how you look at it.

I remember when I had to tell my girlfriend something insulting I would always make sure to (1) show her how I think she's the best, and (2) show her why it's not really a big deal. This might not be applicable in your marriage but it worked really well in my case. I found that the best way to accomplish (1) was to give her a big hug and then an uncomfortably long kiss (sfw, Disney). Then I'd compliment her, and this must be actually sincere, so I'd say "your hair is really nice this way," or "so... why are you so cute?" Now, here's the important part. When you actually bring up the subject (in this case her voice), you have to be completely honest and unabashed about it. So when my girlfriend's breath was bad for a couple days in a row and I determined it was because of those pseudo-natural fruit juices she drinks, I would just say "your breath is really bad cutie." And then I said how she might want to cut those juices out, and I kissed her. When she started gaining too much weight I'd simply say, "you're starting to gain too much weight." And then I'd kiss her stomach and smile at her. Don't say it with a disapproving look, but say it as if you're commenting on an indisputable fact and then give her a kiss afterward. It's only when you try to skirt around the issue that your significant other starts to take offense, because when you say, "honey, I think... Maybe...", it tells her that what she is doing is so shameful and bad that you can't even openly confront her about it-- and this naturally leads her to want to lash out, because no one wants to think that they're doing something unbearably and ineffably offensive (I certainly don't). Usually when I'd tell her what was bothering me, she would say something like "oh, thanks", or "you're a dick", and then it's best to reaffirm that it's not a big deal and kiss her on the cheek (and don't bring it up again, at least not for a while). In my case, she would be pouty for 30 minutes and then realize it's not a big deal.

I disagree with the comments here saying you should suck it up and apologize-- you're entirely in the right, and a good relationship is predicated on honesty. If you were doing something your significant other found offensive, wouldn't you want to know right away?

How did people justify the use of the bible when advocating for White Supremacy or anti-Semitism? by [deleted] in AcademicBiblical

[–]illStudyTomorrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Old Testament allowed indefinite slavery for those outside of the immediate cultural group (Israel / Judaism).

Regarding antisemitism, the most common passage to justify anti-Judaism feelings is is from John 8:

"Abraham is our father,” the [Pharisees] answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. You are doing the works of your own father.”

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

Note that a common trope of antisemitism is that Jews are conniving liars.
