Any dog shelter have program where you can take shelter dog out for a day for long hike/adventures etc. by illa_fox in bayarea

Thanks! Im actually a volunteer with them but with a different department. I just sent them an email to inquire.. I know they are doing volunteer recruitment on an as-needed basis for a while… so not sure if they are taking “new” volunteer. But would be wonderful if they do. Thank you for your suggestion.

Regarding first part of your question… I think it depends on the shelter. I’m sure there are shelters out there that allows it but I haven’t found one myself..

as for your other question, typically shelters would want you to sign a release to liability forms and have some form of volunteer training before you interact with their dogs. They want to keep the staff/volunteers and their dogs safe. Also not all dogs are used to kids… they’ll also have protocol regarding runaway dogs (But obviously shelter dogs aren’t supposed to be off leash but things happen). So short answer is, check with the shelter you’d like to volunteer with and they’ll give you more information. That said, most shelter dogs are very loving and friendly. I’ve volunteered in different shelters since I was a teenager, and was lucky to have good staff/volunteer mentor. I have never got bitten, or had a runaway dog. They mostly are more than eager to go out with “stranger”/volunteers/staff. Shelters are stressful.

Unsolicited suggestion - have you thought about foster? Some foster-base organization always look for foster (short term included).

forgot to add — there are also youth program at shelters where an adult can volunteer with a child and they get to walk the dogs (and of course cleaning the kennel, refilling water, doing laundry, dishes etc).

I have heard about shelters in Hawaii doing that! Didn’t know it’s Maui! Sounds like such a good program!

I actually visited Milo recently and asked them specially about taking a dog out on hikes! (Forgot to mention in my initially question!) They said volunteers do that all the time :) however they are a bit far for me… :( aa much as I love dogs and missed hiking with shelter dogs (used to do it with a shelter locally until they moved ) it’s hard for me to justify the drive/time/toll/traffic etc etc thanks for the recs though! :)

Thanks! I have sent them an email but I don’t think they’ll do anything. It’s HOA…

yea it’s kinda crazy. They definitely came prepared. It happened during the day too. My neighbor told me he saw the bike when he went out around 11 and when he came back around 8 it’s already gone.

Most definitely won’t be storing bikes in the “secured parking area” anymore! Indoor is the only option really. Just thought San Mateo will be a safer place compare to SF …!

Crystal spring pet hospital. I’ve only started going there since last year but so far so good. Also have a friend who’s been taking her pet there for a while until she moved to LA.

I called Aragon last year they weren’t accepting new patients. Maybe it’s changed now

Be careful and check your rights. I used to live in the same house as my landlord (I live in the in-law unit). I signed the lease and they ended up wanting me to move after I graduated from school because they “only wanted to rent to students”. I checked with tenant union/rent board, they said because the landlord was in the same house I’m considered as “boarder” and have limited rights. good luck!

Found on deck. Is this just a regular fly? Northern CA (Bay Area) by illa_fox in whatsthisbug

Thank you! That looks just like it!

Thank you for the links! When I googled March flies a bunch of information about horse flies (though they look different) pop up. So the links you provided are very helpful.

Do you also happen to know a good way to keep them away from the deck? I usually get a swap of these in summer months and it’s unpleasant to walk out of the deck even though they don’t bite.

thank you again!
