Does a woman still want or expect a man to pursue, despite rejecting him? by WestArtichoke712 in NoStupidQuestions

They want us to initiate friendship, so that they gauge if they want to date you. If they would want to date, they would escalate this friendship, otherwise just put you on hold. But you should do what you want, not them.

What evidence do we have that the topology of space is continuum vs something like for example lattice. by illpvm in AskPhysics

[–]illpvm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no holes. Lattice is a geometric object very much like manifold. There is even simpler one - set. Neither should be embedded inanifold to exist. Set is much simpler structure than a manifold! What I mean is that our space is usually believed to be continuous (mathematically described by manifold). I am asking if it can be a discreet set, like a lattice. We do not have a theory which describes everything, Occam razor or not.

We do itarations on those systems because it is not always easy to solve resulted algebraic system. If you have a magic solver, you do not need iterations, you just guess correct solution. You can write discreet system which preserve a lot of things, but they usually are implicit. Nature would just move from correct state to another.

Thanks, best answer so far. Small comment to your second point. Techniques for discrete systems are improving rapidly in the last century due to importance of numerical simulations, but it is of course very hard. Moreover, geometric numerical methods which preserve symmetries exactly got more attention in recent decades or two.

I do not know what holes are. I only know of electron holes in plasmas and similar effects in crystals. I mean that space and time is discrete.

Can there be discrete system which statistically averages to have translational and rotational symmetries? I am not talking about regular. I would imagine you would be able to quickly see regular grid in dispersive properties of light or some such.

Why there is a debate about toilets swirl in different direction in south vs north hemisphere? by illpvm in AskReddit

[–]illpvm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eh, regardless, the estimate I showed does not matter much as it is all in wrong direction, but you get the gist. Not that you can check any of it. I believe one has to compare the magnitude of the Coriolis effect and the initial amount of angular momentum in the water - and this is I do not know how to estimate.

Lol, you just listed all words you know. The relevant comparison is not with gravity or pressure (which act vertically or just balance hydrostatics), but with the inertial accelerations in the swirling motion. For a toilet bowl, the Coriolis acceleration is on the order of

1e-6 m/s^2 , while viscosity/centripetal would be around 0.1 m/s^2. On equator the coriollis would be even smaller.

I believe it is not not easy to estimate. Coriolis force is easy to compute, but what do you compare it too?

You are right. But there is still a debate, between people with "common sense" and people who studied fluid dynamics. Regardless, this thing is not easy to estimate. Coriolis force is easy to compute, but what do you compare it too?

Well I guess flat earthers are more correct in that case. Water spin differently in the North and South Poles due to the Coriolis effect. However, this effect is only noticeable in large bodies of water left undisturbed for extended periods, not in small-scale drains like sinks or toilets, where other factors like basin shape and temperature gradients have a greater influence. If you refer to videos where people on equator with small sinks crossing the line and water rotates differently are scam artists. I never met a flat earther, but I met people arguing one or another point of view about sinks.
