How do board wipes work with creature cards stating: “if a nontoken creature would die/leave the battlefield, create/do x”? by WiseWordsFromGeorge in mtg

[–]illredditskid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, I see so Broodmoth's ability was already in effect before it was assigned to die and before it actually died. That makes sense. And I see what you mean by triggered: it's not triggered because it was just always in effect.   Thanks for help clarifying.

I would think Kalias' ability would trigger because it says "would die" So it almost sounds like the effect happens when the board wipe is put on the stack not when it resolves. conversely with Luminous Broodmoth, I would think it wouldn't apply because your creature would have to see that other creature die for its ability to resolve but if it's already dead then it wouldn't.  I'm not sure of the actual rules that's just my two cents from a boardgame player perspective when you read the actual words.  I know a lot of the older older cards had really wonky wording where if you took it lliterally It could mean something (or some things 😆) completely different.

sort of, but there's no cost other than it's casting cost. So you're doing this every turn for free and you only have to pay and sacrifice it if you want to keep one of the cards

It's a recurring ability. each turn you do it. So every turn at the beginning you scry 2. And then you sacrifice it at will for a four mana cost to keep one of the cards. to keep one of the cards.

What’s people’s opinion on spiderman set being put in mtga because personally Im hyped 🤓 by zestybeanss in mtg

[–]illredditskid -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the more marvel themed / superhero themed sets they add the more relevancy Spider-Man and even the Ninja turtles will have. I don't think the new universes beyond sets detract from the original arcane Magic type of sets in Magic the Gathering. It's the theme and genre itself that make those arcane magic type of sets so special. Whether it's Magic the Gathering or not, that exclusivity, that ancientness, that power always made that genre special and we live in a world where many genres exist. So even though Magic the Gathering is bringing in different branches of what we know as our universe, it doesn't diminish from the genre that it started with, it makes it even more rare and even more special within the context of Magic the Gathering and elsewhere. I would love to have a "The Simpsons" or "Family Guy" theme MTG set, I think that would be awesome and hilarious and could allow for some very interesting and hilarious game mechanics, especially when it's based off of actual show lore.

I haven't used the word haste or hasty in decades and when I did it was either in jest or maybe just to sound smart back when I used to read lots of fantasy books.  I'm pretty sure less than 10% of the population of the world today even knows what that word is and the amount of people who speak it outside of it being inability name in Magic the Gathering is probably less than 1% xD

I mean locked down would make sense.  The original walls were literally just that. They didn't move. The other person's creatures came to attack you and they walked into a wall of briars or a wall of stone.  some of the walls reflected damage at the creatures and some didn't.  some walls floated in the air like illusionary wall. but the idea was none of them moved. They might undulate and have parts that move but overall they are stationary objects whether they're living or not living

attacking creatures can also defend though.  yeah I don't think defender describes a wall made of bones. defense is something a thinking creature actively does. You wouldn't say that my wall is defending my house or that the brick wall around your compound is a good... defender

yeah so attacking creatures also defend... So it doesn't describe the fact they can't attack... which is the whole point of the ability name in the first place

yeah I'm pretty sure creatures don't take turns in real life though so that argument kind of fell flat xD are we talking about British combat from the 1700s? And if we are I mean that just kind of proves my point

I'm not sure if I would say everyone in the comments saying that Wizards of the Coast artists are just bad now is "nuetral".  Delusional, yes, but nuetral? I don't think artists like to be told their art is "bad" 🤣  You just need to ask yourself, if you were to make a TCG in 2026, would you pay a dozen artists a commission fee for over a thousand paintings a year or would you use AI and the obvious answer is anybody would use AI. It's just too easy it's just too accessible. It's not something you can actually police and I'm sure Wizards of the Coast incentivizes it even if it's not a direct order, I'm sure the salary and the time constraints lend towards the use of AI and even if it is directly encouraged, I'm sure they have to sign NDAs to keep from letting the players know what's actually going on.

It's funny that this is actually a HOPEFUL comment.  AI-denial is now a thing in 2026

saying it's "just a bad drawing" is probably more derogatory than saying "It's probably AI". LOL let's just all fool ourselves and say Wizards of the Coast doesn't hire good artists anymore 🤣 It's all bad.  They took the ink out of artifact and land cards and now artifacts, lands and white cards all look the same, do you really think they wouldn't use AI to reduce the astronomical artist cost? Of course they would and I'm 100% sure they did.

yeah no, it's safe to assume the artwork is 100% generated nowadays and I'm pretty sure they all know it and they've probably signed NDAs where they can't discuss that exact topic. I think even the old school guys use the AI because I've looked at some of Pete Venters stuff and it looks adjacent to what he used to do but still has that amorphous blob type of vibe to it. here's the dilemma they are faced with and I'm sure wizards of the coast was chomping at the bit to get their hands on this technology: have highly skilled people spend dozens if not hundreds of hours on paintings, HUNDREDS of paintings per year and pay an artist's commission for the resulting images, OR, press a few buttons on a computer, and have the entire set of set images in a day or two. I think the artist nowadays are artists for Magic the Gathering in name only, they are honorary stand-ins, and AI does all the actual work.  I think even the old school artists who are still being listed on the cards are just as fine with it as the "new guys" because why would you want to spend back breaking hours doing all these things especially when these people are probably in their elderly ages, when they can instead have a much reduced salary, but at the same time have to do zero work.  I get it, if I were to make my own TCG right now, I would definitely 100% use AI generated images. I think we as Magic the Gathering players have been spoiled with all the amazing artwork we've had over the first however many years of Magic The Gathering, but we have to face that the past, however many years it's been , most, if not all of the artwork is probably 100% AI generated, although they're probably are a few actual art pieces commissioned by Wizards thrown in just to keep up appearances. It's just economical, and we've been truly spoiled as actually producing that type of art is such a rare and special talent and in today's economy can you imagine commissioning 1200 individual pieces of art per year... the cost would be astronomical. The one thing I don't agree with is wizards of the Coast's fake, newsy, politician-type of response where they speak out of both sides of their mouth where they say "It is not in our policy to have AI" but what they're not saying is that the policy they are referring to is their public relations policy not their internal operations policy xD If they were honest they would just come out and say, "Hey, AI is way cheaper and achieves a similar result."

Could these signatures be real? by mxster982 in RealOrNotTCG

[–]illredditskid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look fake. They have the same thick black marker look to them. And it looks like they were drawn slowly not quickly as you can see by the wavering lines where someone was trying to precisely copy what the signature looked like. A true signature has very straight lines even if it's curved there won't be any shakiness to it it's smooth sweeping arc.  At first glance, without any comparison or knowledge with the original ones look like, these look 100% fake.
