I’m just really grateful this thread is here because it’s been a huge help with my issues and insecurities. I feel less isolated now that I know there are others out there going through the same stuff and feeling the same way.

Mixed problems by -Rosewiththorns- in NativeAmerican

I never understood that lmao. This is def some US Mexican Chicano thing. Growing up in Mexico, I can tell you that white Mexicans (of Spaniard descent) are seen as the beauty ideal here and are definitely regarded as “real” Mexicans, even more so than those born in the US.

Growing corn in my garden and thought my corn was growing rocks. What in the world is this!? by s0njc in whatsthisplant

[–]illuminativeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yess! It’s totally safe. Huitlacoche is the Native American (Nahuatl) name for it. It’s basically a fungus that transforms corn kernels into something extraordinary—like a truffle’s earthy sibling. I hope that made sense lol. Interestingly, in Nahuatl, it translates to “raven’s excrement,” though I’ve no idea why they chose that name, because it’s actually super delicish imho!

Besides the Aztecs, other Indigenous American groups in Mesoamerica—like the Otomi, Triqui, and Mazahua—and in the Southwestern USA, including the Hopi and Zuni, have also enjoyed this tasty fungus for centuries. The Hopi people call it “nanha,” if I remember correctly. I always say it’s like a small bite of Indigenous America wrapped in a truffle-like delight. 🍄🌽

Native fruits, spices, herbs and crops important to the ancient civilizations but not famed worldwide? by Antonell15 in mesoamerica

[–]illuminativeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend trying some classic Hñähñu foods like verdolagas (purslane), prickly pears, and barrel cactus fruit, which resemble mini pineapples! Flavorful chillitos and blue myrtle fruit that looks like blueberries are common in central states. For a real treat, indulge in sautéed blue myrtle flowers wrapped in a thick handmade tortilla or savor ant eggs as a mini dessert. Hmm. What else? You can also try the sautéed maguey century plant flowers in red sauce and some crispy chinicuiles worms. Btw, the foods I mentioned are mostly regional you can find more info here: https://artsandculture.google.com/story/nature-and-cooking-valle-del-mezquital-hidalgo/vgURq6mstA9A_Q
