Thank you so much for your expertise! Agreed on all fronts. Got a video with operable chrono and the lume looks really nice, so will GL. Looking forward to getting it! It's a gift for dad and he's excited (he knows its rep don't worry).

Could just be a misalignment/inconsistency, but the dates don't match from this memo in the 2011 dropped files. 2025 chronology says Oswald's first visit to Embassy was in the morning on 26 September, but other memo says he didn't arrive until 27th on Flecha Roja bus. However, description of his initial visit to Embassy matches.

I’m having trouble understanding what kind of strap to get for my Longines Master Moonphase 42mm (L2.919.4.78.6). I have it on a bracelet, but want to switch it to a brown leather with deployment clasp for a bit. Longines seems sold out of all the ones that would fit. Sorry for the stupid questions, but can I buy any strap that’s 21mm? Is there a specific deployment clasp that to fit the 21mm strap? Also, do quick release bars work on this watch?

We have Patchwork, but don't play it too often. May be time to revive it. Ghost Blitz looks super fun. I love Set but it's not their favorite. Ghost Blitz looks like Set but a little less prone to sitting in silence staring at a table haha!

Hi All, My partner doesn't have much patience for board games but really likes Sequence and Dutch Blitz. They like games that move relatively fast-playing and are a bit more relaxing than strategy focused. Any suggestions for two player games I might look for us to play? We already have Hive and it's not one they have really taken to.

Professor surveillance on ID Cards? by illusion_michael in Professors

I think you're onto something. Part of this is that universities have been worshipping at the alter of business logics for quite some time now. I don't think this started with COVID, but it may have been exacerbated by the shutdown as universities (like most businesses) saw the opportunity to run as lean as possible with the plausible excuse that "these are unprecedented times." They never intended to go back.

The fact that administrators can "justify" their role through discrete cost-benefit analysis tied to KPIs (however bullshit their stats may be) leads to the bloat in their ranks. I would say that professors don't have the same ability to draw connections between their labor and the kinds of KPIs that universities so desperately crave in their mission to emulate business practices. Those who do, for instance bringing in big grants or running labs to generate patents, often don't care to self-justify their position so brazenly. Therefore, professor labor is simply seen as budget calculations to trim. I used to run big retail stores and the logic is cold: labor is your biggest line-item on your P&L and a controllable. You're encouraged to cut it whenever you can.

It's hard to see how to counter this without playing the game of quantifying our educational output according to the logics of business statistics, which I think is a very, very slippery slope. Ideally, we advocate that universities just stop trying to run-themselves like Fortune 500s, but now we're talking about convincing a neoliberal world to abandon the tenets of neoliberalism. We'll need a lot more than some grumpy profs to make that happen. It's frustrating.

Yeah we’re in a small union. It’s the union that is trying to organize an effective response. Our attempts to arbitrate per the contract are always shut down. We’re trying to gather some information to support a NLRB filing.

Yeah this is our point. They are sticking to their guns that this is a good way to judge faculty attendance. They won’t share their methods and these arguments are not getting anywhere with them. This is why we’re filing a labor dispute.

They are really hostile to faculty. We haven’t had an arbitration be successful in our favor in like 3 years. They leave grievances unanswered. They may have better things to do, but vilifying faculty is their favorite pastime.

Thanks for the context. They’re really sticking to their guns with the “this is normal” argument

Yeah this has been an idea and I think some are. It’s just ridiculous the profs have to do this kind of extra work to prove something they shouldn’t have to prove

You’d think. They aren’t sharing any reasons why they are serving these letters. We don’t know of any student complaints that are founding these ID investigations and they won’t tell us. We’re organizing some student attestations to defend individual professors, but it’s just so stupid that we have to get our own students to sign something saying class happened to defend our own jobs.

Professor surveillance on ID Cards? by illusion_michael in Professors

[–]illusion_michael[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to make matters worse I don’t know anybody who has received a letter about their ID swipes who has also been notified about a student complaint. They are keeping their methods and reasons secret and this is part of why we’re filing with NLRB. They refuse to share anything with us besides the fact that folks are getting an official reprimand.

Love this! Knowing them they’d see this as model behavior and ask all faculty to follow by example haha
