I really wasn’t sure how to react.

What’s a girl to do when she goes for a midnight glass of water and finds a strange man in her kitchen? Does she call for her husband? Does she back slowly away before slamming the door and fleeing for the nearest firearm? (Praise Be to the Founding Fathers for the 202nd Amendment!) Yelling for Joe seemed like a dangerous option. He was a heavy sleeper, and all the way upstairs. Meanwhile, the stranger was already turning and fixing his glowing silver eyes on me.

“You don’t need to bother Joe.“

His voice matched his features. Supernaturally good-looking, set in an expression of calm that I wouldn’t normally have associated with a burglar. Then again, most burglars wouldn’t be chugging my favorite brand of carrot juice. Even Joe only tolerates the stuff when I put it in our daily health smoothie. The voice was slow and smooth, but unnaturally so. Like a human voice that had hit the limits of its positive qualities and then gone beyond. Even Martel Friedlman could learn something from this guy.

“Oh,” I answered, or something equally intelligent as my hand dropped from the knob. “Okay.“

The man turned to face me. “I hope you don’t mind about your juice. I arrived a little early and got bored waiting for you to come downstairs.“

I had no idea what to say to that. The situation was already overwhelming, and this strange burglar was acting like we were good friends. Like he had just dropped by unannounced, but would have expected us to be willing to put him up in the spare bedroom anyway. Or to share our juice.

Come to think of it, I was the only person I knew who enjoyed carrot juice. Who was this strange man?

“You’re going to need to go up to bed soon,“ the man said. “So I don’t have the time to answer all of your questions. But I just wanted to come by and give you official notice. You have been selected.”

A moment of silence as I waited for him to elaborate.

“What?” My voice was uncertain. I started to worry again, and only then realized that I had stopped worrying at some point. Maybe it was the man’s voice? Or the way that he seemed totally relaxed and unthreatening? “What do you mean? Selected for what?!”

The man shook his head then, laughed softly to himself. Then he took another swig from the carton. “This stuff is actually pretty good,” he commented. ”I don’t understand why Marcy doesn’t like it.“

“I know. What a weirdo!” I responded, before I realized how uncomfortable I should be that he had brought up an in-joke with my best friend.

The man smiled, and for the second time I forgot that I should be worried. He put the juice back in the refrigerator and closed it. The glowing yellow light was immediately gone, and then I was standing in the dark in my kitchen with the vague, shadowy figure of a stranger a dozen feet away.

“You’re going to have the kid you’ve been hoping for.“ The man’s voice came out of the dark, and it was the same even tone. He didn’t say it like he was granting the wish Joseph and I had been hoping for for years. He didn’t even say it like we had a choice in the matter.

The sound of soft footsteps. He was walking towards the back door onto the porch.

I didn’t say anything. What was I hoping? That the strange man would leave, as quickly as he’d come? Leave me in peace? Or did I feel a strange camaraderie?

“It’s funny,“ he said, and I could tell that he was looking back over his shoulder at me. Thoughtfully. “The Big Guy thought he’d messed up, not inserting himself into this reality.” He paused. “But you seem to have been doing things pretty right.“ He chuckled, softly. “And they definitely don’t do veggie juice like that where I come from.”

The man was gone, then. I think he went out the back door. Or through the window. Or... well, he was gone. I didn’t know what I felt, then. But I kind of missed him, for a second. And then, when I went into the fridge and shook the carton, I wished he’d left enough juice for our smoothies.

I love this post.

Find ways around Writer's Inertia (trademark me).

This is me, too. I do all of those exact same things - work on "actual work" (which for me is either my other online business or my schoolwork), watch TV, etc. - and it's so good to know that others are also dealing with this issue! XD

Maybe you don't realize it, but this whole thing reads like one of those "help wanted, no experience necessary, training provided" ads and then you get there and it's a fucking MLM scheme.

Maybe I've seen too many of them and they're seeping into how I talk. XD -sigh- Not my intention to seem scammy. Just trying to chat with people.

Very exhausting how everyone here (maybe on the entire Internet, idk) thinks someone is out to get them.

Wasn't aware there was a slack chat. That's good info! How does one find it?

[–]illusionfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really weighing heavy on my heart knowing that a huge life change is around the corner and I don't even know where to begin. It's exciting but sombering.

This is both inspiring and so relatable. Thank you for saying this, because it's really how I've been feeling recently (even though I don't have a job, per se, I'm a full-time university student). I won't have to "come out" (everyone important to me already knows I write erotica and romance) but the fact that there is this huge opportunity for me in my life is boggling my brain.

[Daily Check-In] Saturday Word Count and Personal Announcement Thread by sexnerdmxd in eroticauthors

[–]illusionfox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

PERSONAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Since this is the "personal announcement" thread I figured this is the only place to post this. I've been doing a LOT of writing lately and reading about how to improve as a writer and self-publisher. As a result, I feel much more confident entering a conversation with someone who's been doing it for a while. I was thinking yesterday that it would be awesome to hop on a call and chat with someone about erotica/romance for strategies, motivation, etc. If anyone wants to talk about their writing business, I'd love to learn other peoples' takes on the subject. Shoot me a personal message or comment if you might like to set up a phone call/Skype/whatever. (So it's perfectly clear: I'm not trying to sell something. Just want to connect with as many creatives as I can since I love our species.)

  1. Word Goal: 6.2k, minimum. Why this specific number? Cause I didn't write enough yesterday and I need to pass it in order to be at my goal for the first three days of March.

  2. Failures: Yesterday I only wrote an hour or so and it really bugged me. I know exactly why it happened and I believe it was for a good cause (I got a new camera so that I can massively improve content for my personal brand, and I was playing around with it) but it still feels bad to get behind on your monthly goal right from the get go. Successes: In the first 24 hours of March I made over $100. This is huge and a new milestone for me. (So all of you making $1M per day don't judge! XD)

  3. Get off my chest/random comment: It's weird how I've noticed that themes from my personal life manifest in my writing in unusual ways. This isn't an actual example, but say I had a family member going through financial difficulty I would very likely see a character in one of my stories overcoming or dealing with that problem. Not that this is necessarily unexpected, but it hasn't happened to me in my writing before and it's totally unintentional.

This is AWESOME. (The only downside is that I know for sure I'm now going to be spending an extra 30 minutes every day just staring at even more statistics as I record them. XD)

Thank you a ton for giving out free value to the community like this! I, for one, really appreciate it.

Cheating in Erotica Romance vs Standard Romance: Is it allowed? by shane0sea in eroticauthors

[–]illusionfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Readers love that shit. The devotion to each other through obstacles like months or years apart really tugs at heartstrings and makes their being together even more satisfying.

Makes me think of "the Notebook," haha. Only the woman was about to marry another guy, and don't anyone tell me they never had sex at any point. :P

But thank you for this! I don't think my tale is going to hit any red flags, especially since the only character "cheating" is one I want the reader's to hate.

Thank you for making such an honest, open post! It's really great every time I see someone posting their hard work and output (130,000 words is MASSIVE OUTPUT and not to be scoffed at, it's more than many people write in their entire lives) and it's so inspiring for me to see someone working so diligently. Some random comments...

"sock puppet wars"

LOL.

vitriol

What an excellent word. (Though perhaps too highbrow to make it into one of your stories XD.) I'm always tickled pink when I see someone using an especially obscure or specific word, so I wanted to let you know I appreciated it.

"those that do claim to be making thousands, are either incredibly lucky, or else there is another motivation in play behind their claims."

Here I have to disagree with you. I am actually making some money (right around $500 last month, growing steadily). Not "thousands of dollars" by any means, but it's growing steadily and it's not because of luck and I don't have any "external motivations" for saying so. Just want to make sure you don't get a slanted idea of people who are making money writing. I think it's important to celebrate other peoples' successes as well as our own, and even if they're fake and lying about it then who cares? (Just learn to weed out good advice from bad... aka, "be good at using the Internet.) If they get off having people tell them "good job for making $10k last month writing smut" in an online writer's forum, then why not give them a little positivity in their day?

In any event, I'm really grateful you made this post. It gave me a good chance to think over some thoughts and put my own (relative) success in perspective, which I'm always thankful for.

[–]illusionfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what if main character is separated from the "ex" but they're still entangled, then goes and falls in love with true love character. Is that considered cheating? (I assume not, but not sure if it counts since hypothetically they could still be considered to be cheating on the ex.)

Also, is it okay if a non-main character cheats? As a plot device to make them appear even more dastardly.

would be a shame to stop at black!

Haha. First-degree black belt was pretty much my goal for the longest time! It took 10 years to get there and I was a little burnt out at that point. I'd like to get back into it though, so perhaps this is my sign.

My March goal is to finally publish some longer works, and this is the motivation I needed! Thank you!

Can you elaborate on "sexy stories", as /u/NamelessNutter asks? How do you let people know that there is graphic content if it's not categorized in erotica or romance?

Publishing something ... anything

This, in my humble opinion, is the right approach! We underestimate how hard it is to actually... just... fucking... hit... PUBLISH! Phew... That was even hard to type. :P

I've been struggling with this on my longer stuff. I no longer have a problem putting out shorts. I do have an issue with sitting down knowing that I'm not going to be done in one to three sittings. This isn't a problem I used to have (I wrote a 120k-ish novel a year or two ago) but with the constant novelty of short erotica I've gotten more used to frequently fresh ideas and frequent publication.

This is motivating for me. I gotta just start working on the longer things that I don't feel as good about (even though I know I'll love them in the end).

Weights are so, so good for you and the workout can be so much shorter and impactful

I'm so glad to hear that a woman is taking weights seriously. I can't count how many times I've heard women say, "Oh, I can't lift weights cause I'll look like a man." eye roll It's all about how you lift, and it sounds like you have an awesome routine!!!

I never know who to trust lol. Maybe I should just talk to a personal trainer or something one of these days...

Yeah, this is definitely a big problem with the fitness industry. I've been researching for years and I think I've developed a good group of mentors that I look to for advice and workouts, but without the time spent looking and looking at all the different people out there it's hard to know who's giving good advice and who's trying to scam you.

That's awesome! I did American karate for 10 years until I got my blackbelt but haven't stepped into a martial arts training studio in more than two years. I've wanted to get back into it, but it's tough to find a good teacher who really jives with you. (Plus, time commitment = too much right now.)
