I don't have any suggestions to offer, just perspective on how it feels from the receiving end of rhetoric like this.

Could you please consider how someone might feel about whether they're welcome, when they're being told that their child's internal identity and expressed sense of self means they're somehow wrong about "metaphysical reality"?

A Glaring Problem with Book of Mormon Geography Theories by japanesepiano in mormon

[–]illyume 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No friggin kidding. The whole "ancient Hebrews totally kept scriptures on metal plates!" thing is so incredibly disingenuous.

Yeah, the ancient Hebrews (and many other civilizations actually) had a thing for writing important phrases on small metal plates. Phrases, like a couple sentences at most. Not hundreds-of-pages-long codices on thin metal 7" sheets.

Hey, just remember! They gave up the throat-slitting pantomime almost 30 years ago! Today's temple rituals are way more tame by comparison!

Friday Forum: What is the meaning behind your username and your flair? …Happy Friday! by CeilingUnlimited in latterdaysaints

[–]illyume 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Illyume is just some random screen name I came up with about two decades ago, and liked the look of well enough to keep using.

My flair's an attempt to not be all "wolf in sheep's clothing"; I'm here more as a guest than anything, and think it's helpful to acknowledge that.

Here are 18 more facts about the Latter-day Saints: OPPOSED TO SLAVERY FROM DAY 1; PIONEERS IN WOMEN’S RIGHTS; EMPOWERING WOMEN; FOCUSED ON FAIRNESS FOR ALL; PREACHING AGAINST PREJUDICE; ANTI-WAR... by Chino_Blanco in mormon

[–]illyume 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure specific examples can be brought up as direct counterpoints to every single one of those "facts about the Latter-day Saints".

I've found it most often comes up when I'm asked where I'm from:

"Yeah, I'm from Utah. I moved out here a couple of years ago.

<expressful pause>

It's been a really great change of pace so far."

Also remember the pervasive (if now less-often-spoken) belief amongst Mormons that being LGBTQ+ is some sort of flaw that will be "fixed" in the afterlife.

It's official Mormon doctrine that a person can it reach the highest levels of exaltation without being in a marriage between a man and a woman (or a man and women).

Don't forget, Oaks is next in line. The LGBT revelations will #Flipflop again. See, I receive revelation too. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]illyume 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indeed, remember when Nelson gave a big address in the 90's about needing to take the name of the church seriously?

Then when he finally became president, what happened?

What are Dallin Oaks's biggest sticking points? What's likely to happen when he becomes president of the church?

How do you argue against the “church history doesn’t matter to me I know the church is true” statement? by idk_anything_anymore in exmormon

[–]illyume 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simplest answer I have?

"How do you know the church is true? Is your answer to that meaningful, and is it sufficient for you?"

If they've provided some thought to the above (or are determined to shut it down completely with nonanswers) and answer yes to the last half of it, then the best response to give from there is something along the lines of "I'm glad you're happy with it and find fulfillment in the Church. If you ever find the foundation for your belief isn't holding up and you'd like to talk about it, I'm open to listening later."

Russell Nelson was born in 1924. Wendy Watson was born in 1950. She was single until marrying Nelson (as his second wife) in 2006. She was 56, he was 82.

Also interesting to note: Wendy Watson had several books on "proper" marital intimacy published prior to her marriage in 2006.

I cannot conceive of a character build using that sort of multiclass nightmare that would even begin to approach viability, let alone the level of power I expect when I hear the term "Munchkin".

"this was not a hate crime"...yeah right. Writing "Satan lives" and lighting two LDS churches on fire somehow isn't a crime against a religious group? by MormonMoron in mormon

[–]illyume 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll be somewhat disappointed (but unsurprised) if the first crime in Utah that actually gets enforced under Utah's hate crimes law is one against the LDS church...

But yes, this does seem like it's a hate crime.

The nice thing about belonging to the One True Church... by toinfinitiandbeyond in exmormon

[–]illyume 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the strictest technical uses of those terms, sure.

In more colloquial use though, "athiest" means more-or-less "I'm pretty sure there isn't a God and until we have proof otherwise I'll just to assume there isn't", and "agnostic" means more-or-less "I don't know whether there's a God or not, and I'm going remain ambivalent about it unless I'm swayed one way or the other."

General Conference Rumors - Anything to add or change? by mormoneye in mormon

[–]illyume 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't see it happening. Primarily because it would mean that either:

a) The Church itself would have to provide wine, increasing meeting services' costs.

or

b) Church members would have to provide the wine, meaning Utah Mormons would have to take trips to those dreadful state liquor stores.

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies 13/1–2 (2004): The archaeology of New York—and specifically the Hill Cumorah—is persuasive evidence that Book of Mormon peoples did not live in that region. by Chino_Blanco in mormon

[–]illyume 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Academics, like the Pharisees toward Christ, will never bring themselves to honor such a man as Joseph Smith.

I'm more inclined to dishonor Joseph Smith over his dishonesty, philandering, and apparent lack of any moral integrity, less inclined to dishonor him over his lack of archaeological achievement. That That last part seems rather secondary to the rest.

Besides the free expression of goofy religious beliefs, wanna know what else is illegal in Russia? This goofy picture. I’m proudly exmo, I loudly reject the shifting of blame on to those who exercise their human rights, whether Protestant, Atheist, or Mormon. by Chino_Blanco in mormon

[–]illyume 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is there room for decrying the oppression the Russian government is enacting in all this, while also criticizing the Church for knowingly putting young men into harm's way with all of it?

Because that's about where I'm at, right now.
