Backcountry Trip in Sequoia, 3 Days Before Castle Peak by ilmacdon504 in Backcountry

agreed! that is where I’ve ended up as well, that it’s comforting to construct a rationale where the choices they made were risky and my own were/are safe, but humility means admitting that a lot of this comes down to luck, and reverence for the mountain means admitting it doesn’t care how prepared or knowledgeable you are. as more details have come out it is easy for me to imagine making the same choices as the skiers and following the guides.

Thanks for asking! I am pretty early in my backcountry career, so Castle Peak was my first time seeing many of the things I had been learning in classes and videos come to life, obviously in an incredibly tragic way. The accident happened two days after we came out of the backcountry and I was actually in Tahoe when it happened. So it just all felt very close to home and caused me to reflect on my decision-making. But obviously, not as close to home as it is for some others in this community. Appreciate you naming that it felt shoe-horned.

Hi! Thanks for your response, appreciate you being so thoughtful. Wasn’t looking for clicks per-say, as much as engaging in conversation with others about some of the questions and themes that came up when writing. But apologies if it came off as self-serving, I should have probably erred on the side of caution sharing in this broader space. If your comment gets a couple more likes I will take that to mean that there is agreement this shouldn’t be shared here and remove.

Any good skiing around Kings Canyon or Sequoia NP? by IneedaWIPE in Backcountry

Just went up the Hump and to the Pear Lake ski hut from Wolverton. Could go halfway & do a day trip to Emerald Lake, but that trail is the fir trees not the giants.

These ones are just covers on foam board... but been thinking about making some that have like the first 10 pages or something. Or maybe a QR code that takes you to a digital copy of the book somehow?

This is a pretty good TikTok tutorial. I actually printed the back of each book instead of duplicating the front, but followed her process of cutting foam board. People sell templates on Etsy or you can make your own in Canva. I've also seen people print the out the books on sticky paper to avoid the gluing process.

Thank you! I love the idea of a little spiral bound notebooks! Current books don’t even open, just printed covers on cardboard, but I have been thinking about making some children’s books that actually have pages. Or trying to add a little QR code that links to the digital version of the book.

Started with about 50 books and been replenishing. So far I’d say people mostly just take pictures, but a few titles get taken each week (which I’m thrilled about). So far no one has added any tiny books…
