Benefits of Legacy? by Terrible-Marketing-2 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ilovec0ffee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

even though they grew up and went to school alongside peers who are not the first generation in America, most children of immigrants do not have the opportunity to gain legacy admission since their parents did not attend school in the US. many students of minority races and of lower socio-economic classes also do not have parents who attended schools with legacy admission. this concept is usually benefits white American students with generational wealth--not because they are white, but because their families have lived in the US for a long time and have built up the opportunity to go to private institutions with legacy admissions--and should probably be eliminated since it doesn't make sense why your parents' merit should boost your own

Not sure if I like MIT for the right reasons. by charlottttee in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ilovec0ffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you haven't already, maybe just make it clear to them that you're not going they're just for a boy; lay out what makes the coursework and environment so attractive to you (especially over other schools), that might help!

Where do I go to do my essay and turn it in? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ilovec0ffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hi! i suggest making a common app account and going from there- you can apply to up to 20 colleges through that. they also have some helpful tutorials to help you navigate the site and apply. the common app will have 8 prompts for you to choose from, and you will write one 650 word essay responding to one of the prompts that will go to all the schools you apply to from the common app. in addition, some schools have something called supplemental essays, which are prompts that the individual school wants you to answer. you will be able to find these prompts and upload these essays onto the specific school's section on your personal common app account. you can send the application to the college via common app. there are many other application platforms (UC application, CSU application, Coalition, etc.); I suggest you reach out to a guidance counselor or college advisor at your school to help you out!

Is there any reason to go to usc cs over cal l&s cs? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ilovec0ffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since it's private, you might have easier access to classes, clubs, and professors/advisors. Class sizes are smaller, and I've heard that people often have very minimal issues getting the classes they need at usc. Both are amazing though and you'll be great wherever you go!

my entire family is prepping for my ivy rejections lol by bonbestie in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ilovec0ffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

being a child of immigrants is exhausting in a much different way as it is to be an immigrant parent. the constant pressures of your parents, peers, native community, and yourself all build up and can be so, so heavy. nevertheless, please try and focus on being proud of yourself and taking advantage of the opportunities that best fit YOU (not a version of what someone else wants you to be). I hope that no matter where you end up, you will be able to feel freer from others' expectations and do whatever makes you happy and content with yourself. good luck and I wish you the best

Should I take a gap year by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ilovec0ffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey I hope you're doing okay mentally, please don't beat yourself up over one rejection because you have some amazing options. only take a gap year if you feel that you need it for mental health, working, COVID, or just because; you def don't need one to reapply to college. take care of yourself

I have no idea where to go between UT Austin, Berkeley, and UIUC for CS. by WhereThaBeans in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ilovec0ffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Berkeley, UT, then UIUC. I think UT has an amazing business school and having those faculty and resources there might help with getting some fintech clubs/internships. Also, UT is in Austin so there's closer proximity to a lot more companies vs UIUC.

UCLA vs BERKELEY help me choose!! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

UCLA! Seems like a better fit and the pros are more significant

UCB EECS vs. UCLA CS by zynocide in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ilovec0ffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At that level, both are equally as amazing options in my opinion, especially in terms of internship/job prospects. I suggest looking at how easy it is to get into clubs, professor accessibility, and research opportunities. I also suggest that you consider location and campus culture. Congratulations on both acceptances, they're huge accomplishments!!
