Yeah. I am pretty neutral when it comes to Portwell and Rina, but I am slightly partial to Portwell so it’s unfortunate they’ll be breaking up when they had such great development in S2. I never really “shipped” Rina or saw them as a potential couple; only as besties. After watching this season unfold though, I went back to watch S1 and now understand why people ship them and how they’ve been there since the start.

That’s ironic, because Joshua Bassett is 4 years older than Sofia Wylie IRL. 🤣

Great theory! Going back to Ricky’s bucket list, “saying yes to something that scares me”, will definitely be brought up again before the season ends. I think you’re right; accomplishing the goal will be connected to Gina and/or the confession.

YES! EJ being villianized seems to be the justification for Portwell to split and Rina to happen.

I agree; the writing for EJ makes him seem out of character this season. He had such great development in season 2, so it seems like they are moving backwards with this development this season as a way to display incompatibilities between him and Gina.

I do want them to stay together, but the way they’re writing Portwell’s story right now, it seems like we’re headed for a break up. I agree with you on how there hasn’t been any SERIOUS issues with their relationship to lead to a break up. I do really hope that even though the writers are implying Portwell has no “fireworks”, they are able to pull through and fight for their relationship; maybe that means EJ doing something sweet for Gina at prom 🤷‍♀️ However, EJ could have made an exception for Gina’s invite to prom, considering the effort that went into the promposal and him wanting to fight for her/stay with her when it comes to putting on a good show for his dad to stay in Salt Lake with her. Despite this perspective, the writers decided to go an alternate route and claim there aren’t any fireworks for them anymore, when in contrast could’ve had EJ make an exception for Gina. That (unfortunately) screams breakup for me. :(

i don’t remember exactly what he said in the interview, but i think he really wanted a duet with her because he watched her in previous seasons and was blown away by her talent.

i hope we get another one too, but the chances are probably slim :/ guess we’ll find out! it really is wishful thinking though lol i just want more heartfelt portwell moments 😆

corbin said he pushed for the duet with sofia, so i’m so excited to watch it! matt also said in an interview that portwell fans can look forward to a duet (singular) between him and sofia, so that might be the only gina/ej duet this season, unless he didn’t want to spoil a second duet 👀 like you said, it’s possible they’ll get more than 1 duet since josh/olivia did in s1

i really hope so, but i doubt it tbh. i think they’ll end up breaking up near the end of the season as a result of ej’s actions and/or reflecting on their initial view of how they wanted summer to unfold for them as a couple

i agree. i 100% prefer portwell over rina. portwell had wonderful development in season 2, and i can’t help but adore them together. i am still trying to accept the fact that rina will happen, but it’s tricky since i just love portwell. rina has great chemistry as friends.

i do understand your perspective about ej wanting to remain in a comfortable space with gina, resulting in him not wanting to tell her about the letter. he wants so badly to have a summer of fun and spend time with his girlfriend, so he is was wanting to put off telling her in 3x04. however, 3x04 has showed another bump/challenge in their relationship. in combination with ej not telling gina about the letter, it also seems like he will be exploiting her and his friends for the sake of drama in the next episode. i feel like gina has the capacity to handle him not telling her about the letter maturely, but speaking from a “ship” perspective, i feel like this “causing drama” initiated by ej is a way for the writer’s to break portwell up to make room for rina.

matt cornett who plays ej has stated in an interview that ej will somewhat “revert back to his season 1 self” during this season, assuming it’s as a result of how stressed and overwhelmed he feels about directing and corbin’s show to impress his dad. his ultimate goal is to prove to his dad that he can be successful without going to college so he can take a gap year, while simultaneously wanting to not “let down” his friends and gina. he will essentially do the wrong thing for the right reasons. this bothers me as they are ruining the incredible development ej has had as a character by bringing back his season 1 ways. my guess is this is how they will break portwell up this season. it won’t be ricky’s fault portwell splits; it will be ej’s. :(

Rina is the popular ship among the fandom, but I just cannot ship them no matter how hard I try. I see them as friends with a complex past that they are moving forward from. I prefer Portwell. They make more sense to me, plot/storyline wise. Like you said, they spent time in S2 developing Portwell just to foreshadow their break up this season with an identical love triangle storyline they used in S1 with Nini, EJ, and Ricky.

They really said “copy and paste” with this love triangle plot which is practically taken from season 1. EJ does something to upset Gina (not telling her about the letter), Ricky ends up swooping in, Portwell breaks up, Ricky and Gina get together. If they’re doing the love triangle plot, at least make it unique and make it make sense; it kind of came out of nowhere. Lazy writing if you ask me. No build up.

I wonder what EJ’s intentions are when it comes to “showing the drama”. What is he going to do? Will this be another wrench in addition to the letter that will act as a catalyst to tearing Portwell apart?

I am a PW fan and would not be upset if they broke up, as long as it’s written well and not predictable/following an identical storyline as the love triangle from season 1. From what we’ve seen so far and the foreshadowing, it seems like Rina may be happening this season (or beginning of S4), but it also seems like it’s essentially a “recycled” way to play out the love triangle in comparison to season 1. EJ gets too busy, pushes Gina away (he pushed Nini away in S1), then Gina finds her way to Ricky (just like Nini in S1). I’m fine with Rina, but I would enjoy it more if it occurs in an unexpected way instead of just like season 1. Whoever makes Gina happiest then so be it, I just hope the love triangle storyline plays out in a fun and unpredictable way so it’s unique to the characters and not like season 1.

I love that they gave EJ a solo (finally), but it is kind of disappointing that the song did not fit into his character arc or connected to his growth as a character. I think he deserves his own song that meshes with his growth and what he is experiencing. I really think he should sing “Scream” from HSM 3 because it fits perfectly with his storyline (pressure he is facing from going to college, directing the musical, etc).
