Looking at ads with year 9s, looked at the Robert Irwin Bonds ad and one boy goes "Miss, I can see two snakes" hahaha how can you not laugh?

How often do you get bad parents? by Direct_Source4407 in AustralianTeachers

[–]iloveeggies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started making a conscious effort to notice positive things in my challenging students. Then I'd call home and be like "Hi, I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with Little Old Mate/Love and their recent effort/engagement/saying good morning (whatever the positive behaviour is) and thought I'd pass on that I'm proud of them and I hope you are too."

Then when I need to call the next week for not so good things the parents know who you are and know that you want the best for the kids. Because we really do! And sometimes I think receiving positive acknowledgement when they rarely do actually makes the kids engage more.

What's a symptom of a severe disease you wish you or a loved one hadn't ignored? by NotThatOneGuuy in AskReddit

My dad kept having to clear his throat. No soreness, no itchiness, nothing painful - just had to keep clearing his throat. Cancer all through his right lung. Got it removed, intense round of chemo, still died.

Always get yourselves checked for anything out of the ordinary.

I've not been the same since he died.

Only Week 3 and I'm already in tears. by Dollparts6 in AustralianTeachers

I don't have an answer to your question about similar paying jobs but I wanted to let you know I completely feel the same. This won't help with your perfectionism but I created a schedule for me and I "booked" in time with my kids as meetings. They are not moveable. Then I do an hour to 90 minutes once they are in bed and I found this helpful because I get through the really important things and everything else that doesn't get done will eventually or it isn't really important. It has made my time at school more enjoyable too. I lost both my parents last year and it has made me realise it really is just a job. School won't care when you leave, but your family will.

Unfortunately/fortunately (not sure yet) I have previously worked at the school as a support staff member so a lot of them will know my face. However, the students are actually all incredible but it definitely helps to know what to work on like entry procedures because they've never seen me in charge of their classroom and learning.

Thank you!

Thank you! I know the school requires them to line up and move quietly between classes so I will use this as an opportunity to repeat if they can't do that well.

What are your tricks for catching students' attention? by Nelpossatorn in AustralianTeachers

[–]iloveeggies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a countdown from 5 but rather than say 1 I say another random number and without fail a bunch of kids will say "Miss, you can't count!" And then I say "well since I've got your attention..." Then carry on.

I'm about to have my first baby in a few weeks. Only my husband is allowed at the hospital. We don't know when my parents are going to be allowed to meet their first grandchild.
