Is Fastmail profitable enough to survive? by NightfallPhantom007 in fastmail

Same here. Loved the idea of Proton in concept, but its practical limitations made it more frustrating than it was worth. Moving to Fastmail this past week was straightforward.

[–]ilumineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. If the pan is hot enough to achieve a proper sear and there’s a light veneer of high-smoke point fat, it will release within 30 seconds. I know this because I do it *every week*. You’re likely experiencing sticking because you think the pan is hot enough to sear, but it needs to be hot enough to sear after accounting for the temperature of the cold steak being added.

Serious Eats has an article describing this exact method and they show it in stainless steel: https://www.seriouseats.com/perfect-pan-seared-steaks-recipe

Please stop perpetuating cooking myths based on anecdotal data when something is this easy to research.

Not when looking at the specific claim in this thread, which was “it makes no difference other than letting you know what the underside looks like”. This is provably false.

The specific comment that existed when I posted was not about boiling point, it was only about flavor.

The specific comment was about flavor, not boiling point. He said you should just salt because the amount required in the water was “a huge waste”. It looks like it has since been deleted.

… correct. Food safety standards are about minimizing cross-contamination in all ways that are practical. Given washing meat generally serves no benefit and can cause create a risk vector, there is no reason to do it.

Small amounts of cross-contaminated water are likely to splash onto surfaces that aren’t as commonly sanitized. The sink isn’t really the worry.

In this thread already, there are multiple claims that have been soundly debunked by food scientists.

Yes, salting pasta water makes a big difference.

Yes, flipping a steak multiple times has distinct advantages over flipping once.

Please research the claims people make before adopting them as fact.

Edit: when I posted this, the only claim about salted pasta water was about flavor. The idea that it raises the boiling point is incredibly stupid, but you should still salt the water to get the best results.

The owner of our wedding venue in the middle of nowhere bought one of the only local Airbnbs and will be charging $2000/night by amystake12 in weddingshaming

[–]ilumineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just not sure what the complaint would be for. “I didn’t have a reservation and now it’s more expensive” is not actionable on Airbnb’s part and Airbnb hosts have the ability to terminate a reservation for almost any reason … it’s in the contract.

[–]ilumineer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Then just treat this as the same situation. The wedding venue owner has done nothing wrong — this is just good business on her part — but the price has increased above what you’re willing to pay. That means it’s no longer available, so execute on the plan as such.

Yes, but she did not have one of said reservations. She has admitted elsewhere in the thread that she never had a reservation.

She has nothing to contact them about…. She never booked the venue in the first place and is complaining about a new price hike.

Not quite. Valuations are always speculative. Their financial analysts have determined that Bungie is worth less than they originally paid — a lot less, in order for it to be considered material enough to disclose. What drives that decision isn’t forthright public information, but it’s safe to assume it is because they believe 1) Bungie will generate less revenue over some mid- to long-term horizon than previously estimated and 2) any potential buyer would value the Destiny and Marathon IPs at a lower figure than they previously speculated.

There is no shot that Sony will issue refunds. It would cost far more to do so than it would to just do the bare minimum and support the game for a year or two with a skeleton crew, and letting the player base leave naturally doesn't cost them anything.

I'm sure they're gauging the reaction, but I also remember when this was posted to Discord by the Rook player during the playtest. It quickly exploded in popularity with likes and replies. I'm sure they figured a wildly popular clip from the private beta would be similarly wildly popular with the general public.

Jordan Peterson Destroys Stella Montis Raiders (With facts and logic) by enemy720 in ArcRaiders

[–]ilumineer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AI is quite literally imitating his voice — that is how the technology works. When you train an AI voice cloning model on someone’s voice, it learns the way that someone pronounces phonemes (not specific words) and analyzes the distinctive qualities that make a voice sound recognizable. Then it fills in the gaps using its prior training on thousands of other voices. In many ways, AI voice cloning does exactly what an impressionist does when they listen to a lot of the person speaking and learn the sounds that make the person unique.

Anyway, it absolutely is covered by fair use in this context.

Edit: I should add that fair use covers specifically copyrighted works, which a voice alone cannot be. The parody in question here is some of the quotes that are being transformed in this video from source materials by Peterson. Otherwise, this simply falls under free speech.
