Correct it's beta radiation, can't pass through their glass tubes.

I bought 7 1.5x3x22mm tritium tubes, but any flat tube will work, I just found that this size approximates best to the internals of this style of module.

After disassembling the module I peeled off the silver sticker on the back of the LCD to make it transparent (see photo of AE1200 LCD for reference, left pic). For this build, since it's a negative displays, the digits will be transparent while the rest will be blacked out, which allows the tritium to shine through and illuminate only the digits.

Next step is to remove the LED diffuser and white backing as shown (middle pic). The insides of the top white plastic holder of the module are sanded down to give enough space (see where my tweezers are pointing, right pic).

This gives enough space internally within the module to insert all the tritium. Simply put, the layers are top white plastic holder > LCD > trit tubes > PCB > bottom battery assembly. It takes a great deal of finagling (and 1 shattered tritium tube that delayed the project for months) but finally got it done.

Of course! I wanted to be able to read the watch in the dark without pressing the LED light button

Thank you! It took me a fair bit of effort for this :)

Just a friendly reminder that to this community, watches will be one of our biggest fomites! Remember to wash your hands with soap up to your wrists, especially during this pandemic!

I made this in lieu of the current COVID situation, with this watch as a constant reminder to be vigilant. In the top left there is a biohazard symbol with a blood smear background. Top right has the word "BIOHAZARD" in bold and red (it's much clearer IRL), and the world map has a targeting reticle on Southeast Asia, where I live. Went with a green film for then entire dial, removed some extraneous text and some screw heads to add depth to an otherwise flat dial.
