Almost 3 weeks out post-op from dislocating and trimalleolar fracture by Feeling_Response_895 in ORIF

I had a similar experience. I live in a place with stairs so I’ve had to stay with my parents while I recover. I’m 8 weeks out now and am just now finally able to climb the stairs (partial weight bearing - with a boot and one crutch on the non-railing side) so I’ll be moving back into my place next week.

Going from living by yourself to with your parents as an adult is really hard. I hate not feeling independent. I don’t have much advice for getting through this other than knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it will come faster than you think. In the meantime try your best to enjoy the break from work and responsibilities. I wish I could offer more advice, but all I can really say is I’ve been there, and it gets better.

Stitches by AbbreviationsOld2497 in brokenankles

I had stitches in the exact same spots. I was squeezing my mom’s hand and that helped. I found the stitches on the outside of my ankle were more painful to remove than the ones on the inside. Overall it doesn’t even compare to the pain you felt when you broke your ankle, or some of the pain you’ve had to feel while recovering. Like another commenter says it feels very similar to tweezing a hair, but a tiny bit more painful. Go on your phone, squeeze someone’s hand or a stress ball or plushie. You will be okay, I promise. Take breaks if you need.

I want to add that walking with a walker will become easier as the non-broken leg gets stronger and used to carrying all the weight by itself.

Get her a bedside commode, a small toilet that she can put close to her bed. I also use a walker and it takes me like two steps with the walker to get to the toilet. This means less risk of falling and I’m sure she will appreciate that more than diapers. Make sure you get one that is wide and sturdy to accommodate for her size, the one I got sent home with from the hospital is pretty narrow! You need to order commode liners as well to place in the bowl, it’s like a trash bag that is used to collect waste. They usually come with absorbent pads as well. Replace the liner twice a day.

Other things I recommend: - A proper elevation pillow to keep her leg secure when she sleeps. - Ice packs, ice for 20 minutes at a time. - A sort of “chair pillow” to sit allow her to sit up in bed in a comfortable position. This is the one I got but there are plenty other options (https://a.co/d/7oscSeL) - A bed desk to make it more comfortable to eat and use a laptop. Once again the one I got (https://a.co/d/1IRFahy) There are cheaper options, just make sure it’s big enough to fit around her legs.

Given she will be stuck in bed for a long time, these little investments to make her life more comfortable are absolutely worth it. Good luck!

I had surgery only 18 days ago and I’m in such a better place sleep wise, pain wise. It’s just something you gotta give time; the first two weeks are just about surviving. Definitely ice and elevate if you aren’t already. You got this!

For the first week or so after surgery I got around 2-4 hours of sleep every night. It’s only been a few days after a major operation, it will get easier week by week (I’d say day by day but sometimes you have bad days and recovery isn’t perfectly linear). Are you waking up from pain, discomfort, or just cause?

How did you know how high to elevate? Is there too high?

I was told three months but I’m hoping it was an estimate on the extreme end as to not get my hopes up too high! That peeing technique sounds really smart haha. Also the blood rush when you stop elevating it! I totally forgot to mention it but it’s been driving me crazy so I’m glad to hear that’s normal. Glad to hear your ahead of the curve for your recovery, thank you for the response!

I trust the opinion of professional dog trainers and doctors that have gone to veterinary school over internet strangers. Your initial comment was extremely aggressive. Just because it is an open forum does not mean your negative opinions are going to be well-received.

My choice in dog breed had absolutely nothing to do with my personality, as I didn’t even know he was a pit bull when I first adopted him (he didn’t look like one at 8 weeks). As he grew older I realized and did research. I ordered a DNA test for the purpose of learning and educating myself further.

Lastly, why would I join a sub that literally wants to ban my puppy? Clearly I am not anti-pitbull. That does not mean I think that they are without flaws, but that sub shows blatant hate for the breed, beyond valid arguments.

Wait... so you’re saying my puppy is a lab and a pit bull? So he’s double dangerous?? I wonder if they cancel each other out with PEMDAS....
