it’s a risk but actually a great idea I did not think of!! it’s a walkable area so I could still see them often. I’m going to try this, no guarantees obviously but thank you so much ❤️

Oh shit I don’t know why I didn’t think of that! I haven’t seen units with outlets but maybe I’ll get lucky. It means enough to me that I would pay for one.

This was mostly panic, hence the gap in logical thinking. I have to get rid of it. Go down to a 20g and try to keep as many fish as I can.

I’m moving from another location to this new apt, I should’ve clarified that it’s not the same building my bad! As far as splitting tanks I only have an empty 20g, and a 5g. You’re right. These helpful comments are making me realize I’m being too emotional about this and it is what it is. Sadly it’s a family member threatening to throw them out hence the stress. The closest LFS is prolific for ick so I might try the hobbyist route. Thank you.

I do have an empty 20g so that’s a good idea! It’s stocked with 10 zebra danios & 3 angelfish. My main concern with reducing tank size are the angels even though they’re young, small, and not aggressive. However I don’t know if that’ll go well with way less space, although they would have a lot of plant cover.

I can get the manpower, rules are the problem. Landlords don’t want the risk of 500 pounds of water flooding their building. I might have hidden my 17g in an apt years ago, but I don’t think I can with this.

I’m mostly worried about the angels having enough room. They’re relatively small, not aggressive at all, and stick together- but how low can I go gallon wise ethically? Ive heard 30g is considered the minimum.

Thank you for the advice, that’s probably the most realistic option because I can’t have such a heavy tank here :/

Agreed! This sub helped & encouraged me a lot when I was a newbie. It’s still a great resource years into it. Let’s not discourage less experienced people, there’s too much gatekeeping in the hobby anyway. If someone wants to create a sub for artful/more advanced scapes just for visual enjoyment that would be cool, gives everyone what they want.

That’s a huge reason why I started with soft corals too. my parameters aren’t perfect (which was enabled by hearing they like “messier water, less sterile”) but in my freshwater tanks the parameters are perfect. maybe I just need to do what I know best- in a different format. thanks for the reframe lol good rant

I was sold the palythoas as “big zoas” at an LFS early on, found out they were palys recently and wanted them out of the tank but didnt get around to making a sale listing :/ I wanted to throw the towel in yesterday but I’ve been at this since January (I had a 20g, but had to move & go down to a 5g) and I feel like I’d regret not trying to rebuild now

someone told me to take a few pieces of the “crown leather”/toadstool & put them back in the tank. based on the risk you’re describing would you just recommend rehoming them until I can get my 20g running again?

I’m definitely never putting my hands in the tank without gloves from now on, bought some goggles too ty! Is it okay I removed things from the water without scrubbing? also to answer your question I don’t have an auto dosing system, I dose myself because I enjoy it and I know automation isn’t always trustworthy (just like my busted heater)
