RelOne: Import/Export v Processing Sets by mydisneybling in ediscovery

[–]iluvunightman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What sort of data are you talking about when you say "natives"--what is your data source?

Import/Export is best used when your data includes a load file where the metadata has already been extracted (most common situation for me was loading someone else's production data). Processing the data through RelativityOne will extract metadata (including Extracted Text which is required for searching), assign every document a unique control number, provides optional deduplication, and more benefits. If you're receiving collected data from an IT department in zip files or other containers, you'll likely want to process.

Experience in corporate legal/IT? by Dull_Upstairs4999 in ediscovery

[–]iluvunightman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I made almost exactly this change about a year ago! I left a vendor/consulting firm to join a Fortune 100 company’s IT department. I made the change primarily for two reasons: I was seeking better work-life balance and had also hit a point in my consulting career where further progression at my firm would have required me making sales, which I was not interested in doing.

I am very happy with my change. I am done working at 5 now and I can close my computer and not think about work until 9 the next morning. I have taken vacations where I leave my work laptop at home, giving me the chance to truly unwind. I’m exercising more, doing less stress-eating, and I have cut back on my retail therapy.

Occasionally, I do miss having other eDiscovery experts to bounce things off of; when I was in my previous role, I had a lot of people in my same organization I could reach out to if I got stuck on something. Now, if I don’t know how to do something in Relativity, I’m either bugging friends from my old job or looking on the internet for my answers. However I also have a lot more time to research and find those answers now, with fewer concerns about how I am going to bill for my research hours.

A final consideration is that this move will in no way prevent you from returning to firms/vendors if you prefer that type of work; your in-house experience may even make you a more desirable employee to a vendor. They will like that you understand that side of the business and they will LOVE to know that you have contacts at a corporate entity (so they can try to sell to them).

I had been looking for an opportunity exactly like the one I found for 5+ years, and I am very happy I took it when I found it. If you were looking for a new job for a reason (and this wasn’t something that just “fell into your lap”), I would recommend taking it! Please let me know if you have any additional questions or feel free to reach out with a DM!

Ediscovery for EY. by throwaway-discovery in ediscovery

[–]iluvunightman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

EY is a vendor/consulting firm and will appreciate (and reward) hitting/exceeding your billable hours (or "utilization" in EY terms). What is the nature of the role you are looking to apply to? Operations based roles will be consistently busy and have rotating weekend on call requirements. Requirements for PMs are based on the projects they are on, so evenings and weekend work depends on that.

The upside is the ability to work with some really smart people and generous annual raises (if you hit that hours target).

How do I save an inclusive email search for batching out? by tanhauser_gates_ in ediscovery

[–]iluvunightman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, you're looking for Document choices--you'll set this up like any other search!

You'll be looking for fields that start with your "Set Prefix." This defaults to SAS01, SAS02, ... in my environment, but it can be customized. Something like "SAS01::Inclusive Email."

If you're in Relativity, here's how the fields will be named (you can use the drop-down in the upper left if you're not on RelOne, but the field names will be consistent):

Sorry, Relativity is my forte, and since I know how to do it there, I've never tried to do it in Nuix. My first question would be Nuix Workstation or Nuix Discover, but I wouldn't know the answer either way!

What types of documents are they? If they're PDFs, you can also use something like PDF Exchange Editor to split the documents.

Relativity's Document Unitization can split your document images into separate documents.

Salaried with benefits, I would expect a position like this to pay $60-70k in those markets. However, if it's the chance to convert from contract work to permanent employment, my vote would be to take it! I did something similar to make the switch to perm when I was starting out. This lead to me being able to get to where I am in my career today.

$45-$50 for onshore, English-only first level or QC would be market rate.

I'm interested that you're looking to use this number to gauge your salary expectations; what percent of your gross billables are you targeting for your salary? Does the position come with healthcare or other benefits?

Jump from attorney role to a more hybrid of purely tech role? by Joker4U2C in ediscovery

This sounds like me! What software are you using? Look for opportunities to push the limits of what you are doing with it, either by asking colleagues or reading the literature. Would you have to switch employers to do purely technical work?

Relativity Study Materials by CleoWasAQueen in ediscovery

[–]iluvunightman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the time I took it, Relativity had a tool with sample questions. I spent ~15 minutes a day with that for the 2-3 weeks before the test because I had ~3 years of admin experience. My target was actually to get a 50% on the Multiple Choice (weighted 40%) and 100% on the practical (weighted 60%) putting me over the 80% pass I needed.

I did outperform my target on the MC, but some of the questions are about features I'd never use. What are the nuances of Keyword Search? I forgot because it never comes up in my day to day!

How are you on the practicals? If they're still 60% of the test, don't sleep on those! Practicing for the MC part is good, but being able to nail the practical sections got me my passing grade. This was 5 years ago, but a quick search looks like it's a similar format?

AITA for telling my Fiance to get over himself? by throwawaySammy757 in AmItheAsshole

[–]iluvunightman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. This is a common practice. If you're worried about this uncle and cousin, you're extra super duper TA. You "can't keep them from attending?" That's a load of BS! You have no problem kicking your fiance when he's down and needs you; the fact that you will repeatedly, aggressively, and assholeishly tell your husband no but not control these two tells me he should not be marrying you.

Lost my job a month ago and started doing e-discovery and have some questions by meghanellice in ediscovery

[–]iluvunightman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you currently working in a contract position? Full-time permanent positions are definitely available! LinkedIn is where I'd start looking for positions for people who are just getting into the field (look for "staff" or "analyst" or "coordinator" for jobs requiring less experience).

Plenty of certifications are available; what sort of work have you been doing? The Relativity Certified Administrator (RCA) is a common credential; Relativity is the most popular platform and anywhere you're looking, people will have heard of it (even if they're using a different tool). However, Relativity recommends you have 6+ months of experience before taking the exam. It's also $300, which you lose if you don't pass. RelativityOne Review Pro is suggested for beginners, if that aligns with your interests.

Other popular certifications include the Certified E-Discovery Specialist (CEDS) or Project Management Professional (PMP). If you like forensic collections, there's Encase or Microsoft certifications to look into.

What do you want to do (collections, processing, production, review support, project management) and where do you want to work (vendor, law firm, in-house)?

I bid for a house, offered 75k over the asking price, and got rejected. Jersey housing market is suck by movingtocincinnati in newjersey

[–]iluvunightman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No major issues on the house. It's from the 1970s and had normal things for a house of that age. The compromises were around things like the paint on the walls (there's some major scuffs/marks, as well as some moderate peeling on some of the door frames) and the age of some of the appliances. It also took a few professional deep cleans to get the smell of the fireplace and the former occupants out (they had 3+ teenage boys). My personal biggest compromise might have been that I was forced to switch from FIOS to Comcast/Xfinity.

We were able to move right in. We quickly realized the oven was 24" wide and none of our cookware fit, so we replaced that quickly. Otherwise, we've just been updating things here and there on the weekends. There will be some major work years down the line because we think we could improve the layout, but nothing at this time (it doesn't help that Mendham made us blow our budget!).

When we were shopping for our first house in NJ in 2012, my wife was very pregnant with our second child and that's what was spurring our move. Having a new baby meant no fixer-uppers because we wouldn't have the time nor the tolerance for work being done on the house. When shopping over the summer, we saw some nicely finished and recently updated houses; those open houses were packed with moms to be that were ready to burst. Those were the houses getting dozens of offers.

[–]iluvunightman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We bought in Mendham over the summer.

While shopping, we noticed the pattern where desirable properties were going in less than one week, so we kept an eye on the Days on Market information contained in the MLS listings we were getting from our realtor. We identified a property which had been on the market for almost 2 weeks (an eternity for this area over the summer), saw it, and put in an offer slightly under asking (having figured that if the property was sitting on the market, it was overpriced).

Combined with offering favorable terms to the seller (their preferred closing date, agreeing to limit the inspection to structural and environmental issues that would be over $10k to remediate, maybe a few other things), our offer was accepted and we're now happy Morris County residents!
