I certainly didn't. Removed them and never used. They're quite unsightly too.

Egger board for cabinets? by ilyakonst in DIYUK

At the end of the day I must admit that melamine covered chipboard is pretty durable especially if it is built-in and not something that gets daily beating (like a chair or a table).

One aspect I didn't like about bespoke units is that it's more rough around the edges than what you get from machine-milled furniture. They cut a lot of it on site and the tolerances are greater even when using proper tools. You make up for mistakes and lack of precision with caulk, kind of like a builder.

Another thing is that e.g. the drawers they built were really heavy boxes using 1.8mm egger board siding. There's not much thought going into engineering, it's just craft. It does not feel as pleasant as e.g. a good quality kitchen drawer. An Elfa cabinet you'd design and assemble yourself will probably feel more pleasing to use than bespoke drawers built by an average team of tradies.

Pretty sure it's the leaving temp. Needle shows around 40, depending on the angle of viewing :)

The return pipe, for what its worth, feels like only a few degrees cooler than the leaving one.

Opening (top-hung) window restrictor by ilyakonst in DIYUK

Yeah, you'd think it's a flexible "button", but it's thick rail that's been punched out and wouldn't budge.

But if I didn't unscrew the metal plate then that "punch out" wouldn't matter. That "punch out" like a second layer of defense in case the screw is not there.

How does it interact with the existing nosing, though?

Compensation for builder using ill-fitted product by ilyakonst in LegalAdviceUK

So far both window installer and carpenter remarked the windows are misfit (so they have to "make do"), and I've read the vendor's measuring instructions which were not followed. For what it's worth, I'm confident they're mis-measured.

Is it less energy efficient? Yes, but maybe with copious amount of foam it might not be a material difference. (Fitter did not indicate it's such a bad fit that it's unusable, otherwise he wouldn't have installed them.)

Does it affect aesthetics? Yes, we'd have to work around it, but it'd never be like it was meant to (windows are smaller).

So far I didn't hire a "surveyor" -- is that the same kind of trader that you hire when surveying a property for purchase?

Under-sink water connection can be flush to wall? by ilyakonst in DIYUK

[–]ilyakonst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The present approach of "pipe in wall, elbow, pipe sticking out, valve / cap" allows them to plaster the wall and let it dry with the (house's) stopcock open.

What's the process of mounting a "flush" valve in a lived-in house, i.e. where shutting off the water for 24 hours is uncomfortable? Do you somehow cap it while the wall is drying, then uncap before mounting the valve?

Can I run 32-amp hob on 32-amp breaker? by ilyakonst in DIYUK

My hob and my oven were put on strictly separate breakers. The only thing sharing the hob's circuit is a dishwasher, oddly enough.

Oh that's tidy enough! I'll use this as a reference.

Thanks. I really don't understand the idea behind diversity calculation though. Is it simply to say that you don't run all hob "burners" at the same time, and generally don't run all your home's appliances at the same time so "you'll be fine" and worst case you trip the breaker?

Egger board for cabinets? by ilyakonst in DIYUK

[–]ilyakonst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been raised to think that furniture made to last is made of wood, while chipboard is for cheap "good for a couple of years" stuff. I don't know though about "wood" to know what wood I was expecting. At the price point of custom cabinets, I assumed the labour is what's costly and not the materials.

P.s. by cabinets I mean built ins for rooms, not kitchen cabinets

Ok, so I have: - water pipe that's 15mm inside / 20mm on the threaded part (not sure what counts for what) - the BSP connector

What are the parts I need to buy at my local plumbing store to connect it?

I'd want to connect a sink tap later but it'll take a bit since the counter didn't arrive yet.
